Don't sweat not grasping a Tool song lyrically on the first go round. Everything is a metaphor in Maynard's lyrics. And as I go through life they mean different things to me. Enjoy the journey!

Still listening, and still learning. I am 52 now, been listening ever since Tool's album "Sober". I even have a degree in Psychology and tool is still teaching me lessons with songs I have played at least a thousand times. I recently discovered that I sometimes; "wear The Grudge like a crown, desperate to control, unable to forgive and sinking deeper" I must have sung that line 900 times, and only recently found an old grudge I had yet to let go of. Tool Is a companion, who will challenge you, mind body and soul.

@@garri5108 apparently not... they're one of the most appreciated bands amongst other musicians as well as people from all different backgrounds... however their music is not for typical purposes.....and if the ears nor the brain has opened up to feel the little nuances in the music and the lyrics then you won't feel it as much as you would with commercial music or straight energy music

Like others have said, there's not a bad track in their catalogue. *Right in Two* is really beautiful, a bit simpler to understand the lyrics than some others. *Vicarious* is another single who's meaning is a bit more at the forefront. *Invincible* is a newer track that's also crazy good. A lot of their stuff begs to be listened to over and over, you'll notice something new each time or lock into the beat or really click with the lyrics. It's wild stuff man. Have fun!

There’s a lot of Jungian psychology in this song if not the whole album. The Shadow is the subconscious, the primal, part of your mind. If I remember right, Jung believed in uniting the two sides of the personality…an integration of all parts of the Self.

I really appreciate how much time you take for your reactions. To me it's always a bit disappointing when reactors wrap it up in under 2 minutes after the song ends (esp if they don't talk much during the song either) but you just really sit there and take a minute to just think, find words and then 10 more minutes of talking about it. Thanks for taking that time

If he did, the word would spread fast. He would be a great person to do it because he's not breaking down the instrumentals and commenting on the lyric meaning, while showing lyrics (essential) and purely emoting to the music. It's fulfilling to watch.

This is a stellar song, and I love the background, but don't fall for the chromosomal count thing. There are no 44 chromosome people, or 48 chromosome people. More chromosomes don't equal higher awareness or "harmonic" states of being. All humans around the world have 23 pairs of chromosomes(46 total), and if any individual has more or less, they tend to have developmental disorders and often just don't survive at all. The lyrics are amazing, the drums and guitar are top tier, the philosophical background it eye opening. But this lyric video's attempt at describing biology is just not correct. The amount of genetic differences between people around the world (~0.1%) is smaller that than the genetic difference between two neighboring chimpanzee groups across a river in one spot in Gambia (~1.2%). Personal evolution and growing psycho-spiritually, oh heck yes.

I honestly can’t stand this particular lyric video bc of all the explaining that it does. It distracts you from the piece of music, especially during Danny’s crazy drumming part. You didn’t know tho so no worries. Enjoyed your reaction very much and hope you continue on your tool journey!

I love the song, the lyrics are interesting, but the additional explanation really break the experience and I honestly believe they add an angle that goes way beyond the idea of (personal? ) evolution that Maynard was probably portraying here. Jungian psychology has been superceded by moder psychological science for good reason.

Here we go again!! Welcome to one of the greatest bands of all time. Tool, made up of Vocalist Maynard James Keenan, Guitarist Adam Jones, Bassist Justin Chancellor, and the Octopus on Drums Mr. Danny Carry. In general Tool can be divided between their early years which had a more aggressive, angry tone and their later years which is more spiritual and reflective. Each member are elite musicians, Tool only sounds like Tool and are a genre all their own. Maynard writes all the lyrics, and his performances are on par with some of the greatest vocalists in history. He is also a vocalist for A Perfect Circle and Puscifer both of which I highly recommended to dive into. Tool fans will tell you to stay away from reacting to any of their official videos as they distract quite a bit from the songs and lyrics, I typically recommend to just listen to their music first and then on a second go around pull up the lyrics, we promise, it'll add dimension and depth to the entire experience. Tool fans are devoted and love to watch reactions of people’s first time listening, to say they are unique doesn’t do them justice. Take your time with reactions, we don’t mind if you pause and analyze, a lot of their music is open to interpretation which is fun for all of us. Spiral out and have fun on your journey...oh and YES headphones are a must! The Staples The Pot 46 and 2 Lateralus The Grudge Sober Schism Pneuma 7empest Right in Two Vicarious The Patient Deeper Cuts Jambi Hooker with a Penis Pushit Pushit (Salival Version) Eulogy Disposition / Reflection / Triad (All in a row) Invincible Culling Voices Decending Swamp Song 4 Degrees Parabol/Parabola Ticks & Leaches No Quarter Maynard’s Dick Songs related to Maynard's mother. Judith Marie Keenan, a devote Baptist, suffered a paralyzing cerebral hemorrhage when Maynard was just 11-years-old. Judith would remain paralyzed for 27 years (approx. 10,000 days) until her death in 2003. Jimmy Judith (A Perfect Circle) Wings for Marie (Part 1) 10,000 Days (Wings Part 2)

The 46 and 2 theory is a psychological principle that states that humans are capable of only 46 emotions, which are then combined to create the remaining emotions. The two basic emotions are happiness and sadness, which can be combined to create all other emotions. Maynard James Keenan is a genius lyricist...Rappers cant compete with Bars like this!

@johnseward2934

Lol “demand” “complete” “zero changes” Their process is nowhere near that black&white or absolute. Strangely authoritarian way you’ve presented the whole thing. Maynard prefers and asks them to be as finished as possible before doing the vocal track and then there’s some finalizing of both lyrics and instrumentals afterwards.
