And anyway you can't sue people for firing you. If that were possible everyone who has ever been fired could claim discrimination for something.

Actually yeah you can, it's called discrimination, I'm still in a lawsuit with a former company for firing me because of my sexuality, you need to do your research before you spout lies. I'm not asking for advancement, just equal opportunity.

Hey man, yeah I was recently fired for being transgender at a local bike shop. I started their mountain biking program and as soon as I trained someone else, they got rid of me and filled my spot with that person. But, we gotta stick together and push through with community support. Keep up the good fight, you're killin it! Thank you for all that you have done and are doing.

I'm a salaried manager at one of the biggest retailers in the world. I came out to my fellow management and group of about 100 employees a few months ago. I received nothing but support and accommodation from my company and am so grateful and appreciative. I urge anyone looking for work to contact me and I can help research openings at my company in a town where you live.

Aydn Gentile + I wouldn't let my guard down just yet. A few months is no time in the whole scheme of things. A large corporation has sophisticated attorneys who would certainly tell management not to do anything right away against you since it will be obvious that it was in retaliation. If you're still working there with no problems maybe after 2 years then you probably could breathe easier.

Exoress Delivers I would agree with you had not already been a part of 'management'. It's hard to retaliate against someone who is in charge. I appreciate your concern but I've already made it to the top and I'm hoping to reach out a hand to those that aren't there yet. I've been with the company for five years now and again, anyone looking for a job I can assure you my company is close to where you live.

The ignorance in these comments is staggering. This makes it seem like 50% of Americans have no idea that it's illegal to discriminate in the workplace. Once you become a business and start employing others, you are legally required to be apart of secular society. You can't just go and fire someone because whatever they identify as is against your personal beliefs. Those laws are in place for job security, which is a very extremely important part of modern society. Saying that people should be able to fire anyone they want whenever they want for any reason is terrifying - that implies that workers should have absolutely no rights. Might as well get rid of minimum wage, 40 hour work weeks, overtime, holiday pay, maternal leave, unions, and health insurance through your employer with that broken logic.
@kristinb8268
@kristinb8268 7 жыл бұрын
Sadly in the US there are no laws protecting transgender people from discrimination in about 30 of the 50 states, and about 25 of the states have no protections for LGB people either. That means in those places it's perfectly legal to fire someone for being LGBT. It would be great if the US could get federal protections put in place to protect LGBT people in the workplace, and public accommodations.

Exactly, descrimination is everywhere. I have been descriminated for speaking my language but one day I told my supervisor that had taken me to the office because someone got uncomfortable by me speaking Spanish I told him to put it on a paper for me . He never did. Never leave a work if place without a written, stamped letter stating the reason for you been fired or brought to the office. I understand perfectly the feeling of descrimination first hand. I'm with you

Travis Kerr The saddest part is that we need laws to validate that people who are different are still human and deserve equal human rights. I keep hearing "well trans individuals have no protections" as if they are not worthy of just being considered human and therefore don't deserve discrimination protection in the workplace. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 literally states that the U.S. outlaws discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. I think that's pretty clear but apparently they haven't discovered if trans individuals are human yet and deserving of equal rights.

I live in California in Orange County and I never face discrimination like the one I heard today my manager told me that a customer complained to her of the fact that I was wearing makeup and because her child was asking awkward questions that she could not answer she decided to go and complain and to try to get me fired from my job my manager does not care about things like that she looks at the hard work that I put in and the times when I clocked in on time I come to believe that I am a nice hard-working human being and just because of the fact that I like to express myself in a artistic way I don't believe that is reason enough for another human being to try to get that other person fired or in trouble this is a big problem that the world needs to learn about and resolve because we are human beings that deserve the opportunity to live our lives in peace and without harming or hurting anyone else the world needs to educate themselves and better understand those that they do not

I remember when I was pregnant, I was offered a job (didn't look pregnant and hadn't mentioned anything in the interview). I was given a start day and all seemed good. As I was leaving, the guy interviewing me was being friendly, personable, and I mentioned being pregnant. Well, 2 weeks later I hadn't heard at all from this person so I e-mailed just confirming that the next day would be my first and if I needed to bring anything. He responded that he had no made any decisions regarding the position and would get back to me. He never did. Not that this is anything like what you have been through, but discrimination is happening more often than people think.

I wasn’t fired from my job but after working closely with a women for over 6 years she told me to my face that my lifestyle was an abomination and she hates people like me. She was super open about her religion at work and judged people who didn’t believe in god. I found a job with a different department a couple months after she said that to me. I was too afraid to report her because she was my boss and I worked so hard to get where I was in that department. It still effects me 2 years later.

I learned at an early age being allowed to choose our surroundings can be good. I am gay and mixed race. People often give good impressions, are often ones you can't trust. I don't discuss religion or politics with too many people. I retired from a large corporation and most of we're white females. Some knew I was mixed some didn't. I had very little trouble. I took a buyout with the retirement. After two years I took a job at a hospital. I was given the hardest time by black employees, although I identify as black. Things changed when they found out I was a strong and determined person. We need more people like you but it all is still a difficult battle. Good luck dude.

I don't consider being trans a lifestyle, because lifestyle is a choice, like being a musician, or being really into sports or fantasy/sci-fi stuff. Being trans to me isn't anymore of a lifestyle than a cis person's gender is their lifestyle.

@buzzbarnes8691 8 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure why you keep saying "lifestyle" Trans people didn't chose this to be their lifestyle. No more than Gay's choose to live a gay lifestyle. It is the way you were born. By using that word, I think it makes people think that it was your choice to live like this, as people that choose to live the goth lifestyle, or hermit lifestyle, as I am, . It's the way your life has developed, but you certainly didn't choose it.

i can see, and have heard, it from both sides. despite him having no choice in how he feels or views himself, he did choose to accept it. so many people choose to ignore that part of themselves in order to properly fit in society. Such as dating the opposite sex or staying in the wrong body, these are, sadly, choices that people have made. and he did choose to be true to himself. maybe thats his frame of mindset.

I was "separated" from a civilian position I held for over 3 years with the U.S. Dept. of the Army in Germany. I worked as a CYPA (Child and Youth Program Associate) for CYSS (Child, Youth, and School-Age Services). This separation occurred about 9 months after I began socially presenting as Janelle at work. I even changed facilities and began working with a younger age group to prevent undue stress on the kids in my care, their parents, my co-workers, and my chain of command. I was denied access to benefits, despite dozens of requests to be laterally "promoted" from a Flexible Position to a Regular Part-Time Position over those three years in order to obtain said benefits. During this time, I received several diagnoses from qualified medical and mental health professionals, in order to prevent my chain of command from over-scheduling me so that I might better manage my Acute Anxiety and Complex PTSD. About a year ago, I began working a job on the German economy to secure health benefits that would allow me to transition medically without going into debt--after having my ACA health insurance cut off for failing to meet the working requirements. I was regularly working 60-80 hour work weeks, just to get by. I was working 6-7 days a week, sometimes up to 13 hours a day (not including breaks and commutes). I would call out sick 1-6 times a month, because, working in the field of child care, I was constantly barraged with pathogens, and I was stressed beyond belief from transitioning, not to mention working myself ragged. I had doctor's notes when needed, but eventually, after building up a list of dates and times, I was counseled, according to policy, and summarily dismissed from my position with 7 day's notice, according to AR 215-3, Chapter 8-2. During this time, working two jobs, I called out sick on a far less frequent basis than I ever did pre-transition (which is documented, though I have no access to said documents without an extensive FOIA request), working only one job. I had documentation from professionals, even going so far as my psychiatrist proactively writing a letter to my Army employer requesting that I work no more than 30 hours per week in their facility--which, even then, would mean I would work at least 50 hours a week. I even got on Methylphenidate (Adderall) to treat ADHD, which improved my attendance greatly! I even spoke with Sharon Wong, Deputy Director of Policy for the Diversity and Inclusion Department of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. She was sympathetic, but ultimately sided with my employer, even about issues regarding name change policy (which she is actively working to change). I had this conversation with her when she was in Germany to give a training (which I had request nearly 12 months before, TO THE DAY), and I wasn't even informed of the time to attend. Thankfully, a close friend at work, and a couple other people who'd only just started, gave Ms. Wong hell for me! Ultimately, I know I'll get a good story out of this. Literally within 32 hours of completing my out-processing with the military on 4 August 2016, I was invited this past August to the inaugural Trans Women's Writing Workshop, held at Brooklyn College, sponsored by Topside Press. I got to work alongside 25 other amazing trans women writers, under the tutelage of Casey Plett. I performed my old and new work in venues in Brooklyn and Manhattan. AND, as a result of this experience, I decided from Germany to Brooklyn. I fly to New York in 8 days. So, I guess I can't say that being fired for being Transgender was the worst thing that's ever happened to me. Just trying. But if I can deal with transitioning in a foreign country in a pre-Trans-Inclusive military, I can deal with anything. Thanks for putting your story out there, Aydian!

I was in the hospital once, they recommended me to a local doctor to have for a yearly check up doc. First of all, no one told me I even had an appointment, of course. Secondly they called me the day before my 'appointment' and told me "I'm sorry, but we can't handle your case". I was honestly too stunned to even ask why. But it was pretty obvious. I get that I live in a town that's mostly full of old retired people, but really? That is why I am terrified to tell anyone that handles 'my case'. I live in a low income building and I can't even tell them. They already don't like me. I'm like the perfect tenant. I pay my rent on time, every time, I do exactly what's asked, and I'm terrified that they'll kick me out. How is this fair? Letting someone just slip in the cracks that's probably just going to be a statistic in a couple years or less. That, is the US in one paragraph.

Great video and thank you for talking about your experiences. I'm a photographer in the Netherlands and I do notice that there are people who are very hesitant to hire me (I don't hide that I'm trans) or don't want to hire me at all because I'm trans. At first they do want to hire me and are very impressed with my work, then all of a sudden its no longer necessary or they say they found someone else,...when in fact they haven't found someone else. I live in a village where a lot of people know each other, so word gets around easily. Some are okay with me being trans and some are not, but I'm not going to hide who I am. I also do notice that there are more and more people who want to know what being transgender means and want to talk to me about that and I'm all to happy to tell them and have a honest and open and positive conversation with them about it. So hopefully one day people won't be hesitant about hiring someone who is transgender or not hiring someone at all because they are transgender.

I'm afraid of coming out at work for this reason. I'm pre-T and might be starting in the next 3 months. I've already started coming up with excuses for the changes my body will go through so I won't have to come out at work. Not only am I worried about being fired, but I'm worried about being physically harmed by some of my coworkers. I'm also actively looking for a job that I know will be trans-friendly. The reason I'm worried is because of the religion that is prominent in my area is openly transphobic and I know that almost all of the management are members of this religion, and a lot of my coworkers have said blatantly transphobic things without anyone even bringing up the topic. It pays really well though and has great benefits, so I'm hesitant to quit.

This situation depicted in this video brings back SO MANY instances of discrimination, etc. that are too many to count. I was out in high school as a "lesbian" from 1985-1989. I attended a small women's college in the South not far from where I went to high school from 1989-1993. I was hopeful that I would meet people in college who would understand me (In truth, I was "nonbinary" before there was a word for it, and I had my own gender dysphoria that I could not really articulate or understand myself. At 50 years old, I finally realize that I am not only nonbinary but I am in fact biologically intersex as well with severe PCOS that I have battled with all of my life lending yet another level of complexity to my situation. I have a trans masculine appearance without being trans per se. I am naturally androgynous, and make many people "uncomfortable" with my masculinity and "more masculine vibes." ). While in college, I made the mistake of falling head over heels for a classmate who was considered "open minded," "artsy," and more than obviously flirted with me (even gave me erotic messages, etc.), went out with me on dates, and even told me that she would be my girlfriend, and take me to a gay nightclub one weekend in another city for an outing one weekend. Not surprisingly, I sent her flowers for Valentine's Day. She immediately broke up with me, and the homophobic slurs and insults began along with stalking and death threats. I had confided in her earlier that sometimes I wished that I had been born a man, and that I didn't really feel like I fit in. She used this as ammunition to get together with some friends of hers (who had a college punk rock band), and they sent me a mix tape of their music that was full of insults directed against me specifically along with a song with the lyrics: "Meet me down at the playground, I'll spread your genitals across the lawn. Hysterectomy/Castration! Who needs those useless glands! Maybe now we can get some sleep...." She told everyone that she could on campus that I was a "creep," and that I was a "queer." Needless to say, I was lonely on campus, but I was determined not to be defeated. I overloaded my coursework to occupy myself, and I graduated cum laude. Ironically, I have looked her up on the Internet 30 years later, and she is an active member of the Unitarian Universalist church, and fights for "Black Lives Matter" and "Antifa." Ten years ago, I tried to contact her again, and she made death threats again. She hasn't changed one bit, and one would never believe that she is the dangerous homophobic that she still is! While in college, I had to do my student teaching in the same high school that I graduated from. I was hated there for being gay as well, but I did not let it stop me from student teaching successfully. Some of the students that I taught openly called me "dyke" and "queer," etc. as I presented my lessons. However, I kept order, and still received good reviews and evaluations from the school. However, when I applied for jobs later, the local school system would not hire me, and none of the surrounding schools would. I worked a number of local jobs in various businesses. People who knew that I was gay would walk in and tell the management that they would not buy from the store again as long as I worked there, etc. I changed jobs often. I failed security clearances due to my homosexuality, and could not work for the government or join the military. I worked for private security services (for lower pay and fewer benefits) to work around the clearance issues. I have very strong Technology skills in the areas of computer programming, cyber security, and computer repair skills, etc. This has enabled me to have employment because I have skills that others cannot do.. l also taught in psychiatric hospitals, paramilitary settings and in some public school alternative and special education settings that required me to work with very violent students (I went on to get a MSEd in Special Education as well). My behavioral management skills have also been very good, and my appearance has not hurt me working in these environments either. I have been constantly underpaid all of my life due to my natural appearance and my reputation for being "a queer." Due to recent changes in societal attitudes, I am presently a special military officer in a private military school setting, and I have done well in this placement for several years. Nevertheless, we have had a great deal of staff turnover in recent years at the top, and I will probably have to start looking for another job soon. I can tell that the new dean (and my direct supervisor) does not like my looks and mannerisms. He has started to find fault with my work already, and I can see that he really prefers people who look "uber Cis." As long as this comment it, it is just a small sample of the discrimination I have been through (and continue to experience).

I've applied for a job when I was in Nevada, I pass as male and when I went into the interview it went great, until I had to tell them my Bio Name at the time then they pretty much went silent and said we'll look into your background etc and I never got a call nothing. I knew it had to do with the fact I hadn't done my name change at that point, it just made my depression even worse. I knew my background wasn't bad, as I've had many jobs before and nothing ever was bad in it.

Sorry about your terrible experience. As someone who was assaulted at the front door of a dance studio by an ex dance teacher, I can relate to a door suddenly being closed and unfriendly. As a Catholic, I would like to say that I have never heard of any New Testament Scriptural basis that would even support discrimination against LGBT people. For that one verse that briefly mentioned that men maybe shouldn’t wear women’s clothing, we have a verse in Galatians, “there is no male or female in the spirit.”

Mel D, Just a quick question : How did your job find out about your surgery? Who told them? If it was anyone in your doctor's office or in the hospital directly or indirectly related to your care as a patient who told, then they or that medical establishment could be in a lot of trouble! They have breached HIPAA laws by sharing information regarding your care and medical condition with people who were NOT involved with your care. Even though being transgender or having SRS isn't a condition, the fact that a medical procedure was involved throws a different light on the matter!!! You should have a look at HHS.gov

My job found out because I thought these people were opening and welcoming of me so I was open with it and told my boss and my co worker. Thank you for your help though. They fired me two weeks after I told them about my surgery. They started acting weird about a day or so after I told them as well. They told me I was let go because of performance. When yet a previous employer I spoke to asked what did I do wrong? And they told me they don't know as I always give 110% in my job. So after that I kind of put the puzzles together....it's sad. I have three kids and a fiancee. And at the time I was the only source of income. Oh well, karma will get them. I will post a video about this topic.

I too was fired for being trans. I worked at hobby lobby for about 3 months, worked my butt off and I'm great at retail, yet one day the (super religious) manager called me in an accused me of being off on a transaction by exactly $1.50. And that since I was within 2 days of the "probation" period they'd have to let me go. I was stunned. I guess it was for the best, management was always trying to get me to go to their bizzare church group, until somehow word about my status got out. Texas has no protections, so I was screwed.

They said had I already completed my transition that it might be different but since I'm very early on T that they wouldn't be able to explain to the kids why my facial features might change 🤔 Their example was that I might grow a beard ! I tried to explain to the leader that it wouldn't be a problem unless they were planning on telling everyone that I'm female instead of respecting my pronouns 😡 All this came about after I signed up took the training course and purchased all the troop leader materials.... I'm still upset 😭 and it upset my son so he quit the troop

I know this video is older however me and my daughter have been discriminated against simply because were disabled. I lost a job because I have a service dog, and have been turned down on many occasions due to my AGAB (female) and she is not found a job in 4 1/2 years of searching diligently every day because of her disability. She is blind. There is a law on the books called the Americans With Disabilities Act that is supposed to end discrimination for qualified employees however this act does not protect us. Now I understand you’re talking about trans discrimination which is pretty much the same as any kind of discrimination. You are right it all has to stop. I’m too old to care anymore about getting a job however I know that I would not be able to keep one because I am trans and disabled. Hope this helps someone and I hope someday there really will be no discrimination for people that are actually qualified to do the job.

I was forced into quitting a job for being transgender. It was for Stanley, working in one of their factories. Was called into the office, where a guy was saying he wasn’t going to whip his you-know-what out in front of a he/she..he didn’t want to share a bathroom with me. So I was told I had to ride a bike to the other side of the factory to use a private guest restroom. I could never get back to my machine in time so I was wrote up multiple times for being tardy. I got a phone call asking me if I would just quit because one more write up would cause me to be fired anyway and there wasn’t much I could do.

I wasn't fired for being trans, but I was not hired because of it. This isn't me saying this because they hired someone else who was more qualified, it's the only reason I can find. So I did my internship with this company, I was doing great at my work given to me and solving issues they had with on going problems. At the end of my internship the CEO told me he wanted to hire me but not until "the project" was released. He gave me all the contact details I needed and told me to stay in touch, and if I haven't heard from him by the time "the project" was released, to contact him directly. That time came around and everything went smoothly, but during this time I went through some major changes In my transition to the point I was CIS passing. He invited me to the opening of "the projects" event and we spoke there. Everything went smoothly but he just seemed a little off. After that I had very little contact with him and now he doesn't reply

I have lived in Eugene, OR for over a year now and have been passing as a white cis male the entire time. I transitioned in CA but grew up in a small town 20 mins from Eugene. Oregon is not a state of progressive people that everyone thinks it is. White supremacy is rampant here, as well as homophobia and transphobia. I haven't been passing for that long, so I'm still trying to figure out when/how to come out to new people. Being stealth isn't comfortable for me. Since living in Oregon as an adult, good jobs are hard to come by. The only jobs I've had that have provided livable hours and wages I HAVE NOT BEEN OUT TO. all of the full time jobs I've had have only had cis men in the position. not to say that I'm happy about not being out at work. if I had been pre T or less than 8 months on T I'm sure I would not have gotten hired.

About 13 yrs ago, my wife (Well, sort of ex-wife) was working at this school for kids who had various problems with learning. Some of them had things like add, adhd, dyslexia, or even mild forms of autism. Other kids had rough home lives, and would act out, and other kids had other problems. Anyway, she was Wiccan (she may still be, but Idk. I haven't talked to her in a few yrs), and her employers, and the people she worked with, were all VERY Christian. After she had been there for at least a few months, they somehow found out that she was Wiccan. One of the people she worked with started saying things about her killing cats (which obviously wasn't true. She's a huge animal lover, and she loves cats). This girl just kept causing problems. After about a week, she was fired, because they didn't know ANYTHING about Wicca, and they *thought* it was some evil religion (like it's some kind of cult or something), where people sacrificed animals and babies, and did all kinds of other really messed up, and evil things. That is all EXTREMELY far from the truth. So, yeah, she got fired, for being Wiccan. I usually try my best to keep my beliefs (lack there of beliefs), and certain other things about myself from being known by most people (in the real world). People I'm close to know pretty much everything about me, but they are the only people. Employers, or even most of my extended family don't get to know everything about me. I really don't want to have to deal with any unnecessary bs, just because people are afraid of what they don't understand. What's worse, is when people refuse to inform themselves about something that they don't understand. When they would rather continue to think the way they do about something, instead of actually learning about it, and maybe changing their minds about something. Being accepting of something. Having an opened mind. It sucks that you were discriminated against, for being transgender. Some people are close minded. Just don't let that experience stop you from doing what you want to do. Keep going. It seems like you had very positive experiences before that. So, don't just become a "victim", and stop trying. Keep going, and be what you want to be. It sounds like you're good at it. I wish you luck.

I was discriminated against badly in a 3rd shift stock job by all the managers and human resources for being transgender. Though they could not fire me because of their policy, though they tried very hard to they could not. Instead they cut my hours and even after the problem was agreed to be over with without me filing a lawsuit, they just went right back to it as if I didn't matter. It went from me being told that I was doing a great Job, to "because I got my paperwork switch to show my new name and gender" I was now being treated horribly. Like oh you're a man? Well you should be able to handle more than full time hours on parttime status with none of the health benefits like everyone else has, and even though you have been called by only male pronouns and your new legal name while you have worked here... it is suddenly an issue with us and we dont want you to use your bathroom now, we dont want to use your real name, or use your pronouns, you make people uncomfortable for just being here. I ended up quitting my job there because of how much it stressed me out. I was working this 3rd shift job so that I could spend more quality father son time with my toddler during the day. I cannot project that stress on my child. If I'm going to be getting next to no sleep, a work place treating me like garbage is not an option.

Man, I'm so sorry this happened to you. What is up with the Oregon bakeries of hate?? First it was Sweet Cakes in Gresham and also the cake shop in your town. Granted, Oregon is an 'at will' state meaning employers really don't need a reason to sever the employment relationship but this makes me embarrassed to be an Oregonian. Not to mention this is the stuff of HR nightmares. The lack of communication or feedback, firing someone via email, the 'handbook' that I'm willing to bet doesn't exist since you never knew about it, not to mention the violation of final paycheck rules. Oy... as a gay man, if I had the money I'd love to open a bakery with a LGBTQ focus so everyone would feel safe going there and we wouldn't have to deal with hate. I'd like to think that Oregon is better than this.

Same thing happened to me except it was because I'm very pro LGBT rights and I live in the Bible Belt south. They let me go without telling me why, which I figured out on my own, and even paid me for the entire week (it was Tuesday, paid me through Saturday).

You haven't been fired for a "lifestyle" but for your identity. I really don't like when LGBTQ+ adopt the wording of "lifestyle" as it's just a Queerphobic term used to dismiss identities and validate unacceptable discriminations. If my message reads harshly, please know it's by any mean not against you but against all the cis-heterosexist queerphobic vocabulary that is ingrained in everyone's brain. I'm sorry you were fired for your identity and wish you very well, always.
