In this video, I play the white side of a Traxler Counter Attack (a sharp variation of the 2 knights defense) against lichess user adfost8 (2012). The mainline Traxler is terrifying for white. Only the bravest of souls should mess with this opening.

@@syomchi he didn’t. Queen pawn should have been pushed the moment queen was out of danger. Also castling isn’t the strongest move in the position. Because you have so many mate threats. The whole kingside trade was kinda jank too.

@Gil Monteverde Yea, the Traxler is just so poisonous if you don't knoe the correct moves... Honestly it's not even worth to take on g7 with the knight, if opponent plays Bc5 just Bxg7, the Traxler is just too convoluted.

even being up a queen, i'd say most people would have lost that position to an 800 rated player. Even though it is clearly winning, black has some sort of fortress-ish thing going on the light squares with the pawns and that knight can't be kicked away while covering the dark squares, so white needs to very carefully attack on the dark squares without blundering to queen or bishop to the night. 3 seconds is so little time.

Traxler is actually a very difficult position for engines to evaluate properly. You need to have the depth set very, very high because there's a few weird lines where a weaker engine thinks it's okay but there's actually a losing sequence 30+ moves down the line that it misses.

This is just another excellent example for what seperates Eric Rosen et al from average players. How he is able to look at the board once and be immediately aware of what every piece is able and/or likely to do (with some exceptions, thank God) is just beyond me. During the last two moves, it took him less than a second to see forced mate in two. I know I am pointing out the obvious here, but I still think it is just incredible. I, for my part, rewatched the last ten seconds of the game at half speed and still needed to pause the game to understand what was going on.

I studied traxler a lot recently. Nxf7 instead of Bxf7 is a draw with best play. after Bxf2, Kf1 and Kf2 are both playable. after Nxe4, Kg1 and Ke3 draw, everything else loses. black can play d5 and castling in either order, the lines can transpose into each other. after black castles, Rh4 is the only move. ben finegold has a lecture on the ccscatl youtube channel where he talks about his game in that position, he said white moved instantly every move and the game ended in a perpetual check that was still part of whites preparation

I used to know all that theory, as far as a I remember if you take the bishop on F2 black is winning basically, and your best chance is to make a draw, with some repetitions, and the best move was supposed to be Kf1 to avoid those lines, but still complicated positions, engines does not even know how to evaluate those positions. And ofc Bxf7 nowadays is considered as best instead if Nxf7 for this reason.

That was a fantastic game. Pity black couldn’t play Nd4 earlier. I feel it would have made white’s job harder if both black knights were in play.

4:11 black should have made the exchanges in this position then took the queen with the knight.. in hopes to pinning down the light squares rook

Kf1 should be played...else Kxf2 and then Kg1...the other positions are so dominating for black. But Eric is the best🔥

Kxf2 Ke3 is still a draw with best play, d3 was the blunder in this game. Rh4 was the only move

is castling a better move than d5 in that position, though? at a glance d5 looks devastating.
