I am so sorry this has happened to you. You inspired me to start ballet again as a 60 y/o adult. I’m shy about my body and have started online class with Broche Ballet (you can do zoom or videos). It’s just for adults and the woman who runs it is SOOOO supportive. I am very pleased that she responds to questions. I’m rooting for you! P.S., she has a beginner pointe class starting in the fall.

P.S., I’m listening to you talk and I really think Broche Ballet (just google it) might be a good fit. Julie is so supportive and enthusiastic. Plus, she has a ton of videos, everything from a 20 minute class on tendus to more structured things. I hope you take a look.

I started ballet at 27, 1,5 years ago. I never in my life did ballet before, so it was completely new to me. In my case, it was a little frustrating when I moved countries and left behind the studio I started with, because at a lot of the places they don't take adult beginners seriously enough to spend time working on their progress, but I was lucky to find very good teachers at the end. That's one big part of why I can progress in a fairly good pace - I am actually en pointe now, working hard to strengthen my feet, doing mostly barre work and basic centre exercises on it. But the other part why I was able to get to this point, is because I decided that even though technically I am not a beginner I still went to absolute beginner classes sometimes. Actually, even though my teachers told me I was not on that level anymore, they appreciated it when I explained why I wanted it. The thing is in more advanced classes, you have to concentrate on combinations and stuff but with absolute beginners, you already know what to do, so you can really use that time to focus on correct turnout in plié for example, and feeling if you are using the right muscles, correct the tiny things like port de bras and posture. In my experience, even though going through the basics might be boring sometimes, it's a great addition. I find that having both is the best combination - on some classes you have to keep up more, in others you can focus on yourself mostly. Also, not sure what school are you taught in, but I have been taught strictly Vaganova, so there's a big emphasis on correct muscle use and technique before anything else, that also may be the reason why this combo works so well for me. So what I wanted to say, is that in my opinion it's also worth taking up the other "lower level" class, you might find that it's actually helpful. Be patient, and if you decide to do what I did, don't think about it as regressing, or having to take a step back, but as an opportunity to lay a stronger foundation. I hope you find a good routine that works for you.
@bypatriciajones7 ай бұрын
Omg that's a great way to see it! Sometimes, it's easy to get stuck on the boring part of the non-challenging classes because it's harder to see progress but the truth is that those classes are super important too! Thank you so much for reminding me of that!

I relate so much to what you're saying. I'm an adult beginner, I started this winter and I'm almost 30, and disabled. I've been doing ice dance for several years but my technique improved faster than my muscle, so I chose ballet as a cross-training activity. On a whim, because going to the gym was not my thing at all. I enjoyed it so much I honestly think about taking any opportunity to work in ballet or ballet adjacent environment. And a few months after I started, my ballet teacher announced she was quitting ballet for at least a few years, in pursuit of another career. I was devastated. I understand so much of your struggle with finding a new place, a new teacher, especially when what you had before suited you. But don't give up, please. You are so passionnate and honest, I wish you'll find your way. I, too, don't want to give up. I'm practicing alone, at home, with videos of my previous lessons and youtube. It'll have to do until I can go back on ballet classes. I wish all of the best for you. You got this, you can do it. Don't do it because you are an inspiration, a model for others. Do it because you enjoy it, because you want to do it. Whatever you do, some people will be disappointed, others will not. As long as you're not hurting anyone, do as you wish, and scr*w those who nag you or any other person. I wish you the best.

That is exactly why I changed ballet classes too! I stayed at the same studio but stoped the curriculum classes and started an open adult ballet class. The environment is much more chill and fun and less socially taxing on my brain. I did start ballet as a child but I do still understand the needing to change studios. In my area there are maybe 5-6 studios and I’ve been enrolled in 5 of them over the years with some more strict than others. One was so bad I only went one week because at the end I came out crying! Doing what you love as a child should not make you cry. I hope the new classes are going well and that you make some friends there who are doing ballet for the same reasons you are.

You're not alone! My dance teacher made me understand that I wasn't the best fit as well 😂 I'm training in a dance conservatory with teenagers that are really good compared to me. She put me in the best level because of my age (training with 15/18 yo). Anyway, at the end of my 1st year she told me : I saw you registered for next year... don't you think it will be complicated for you with work and blablabla? I said no and I'm still taking her classes. I thought to myself: if you don't have the balls to tell me things directly, I won't just get it... This year was my 2nd year with her and I can see she tries to be encouraging sometimes. I'm taking adult beginner classes on top of that though and sometimes privates (yes, I really wanna be able to dance someday).

What you described sounds very much like the English/Royal Ballet System to me (Edit: ah, ok, it was :D). I don't think its necessary for you to keep up with such a rigid system in order to advance. There are lots of studios offering courses for adults at an advanced/professional level, which challenge you to grow, but outside of that system. - Come to Germany if you don't believe me ;-* At the end of the day, unless you are studying dance at a school/conservatoire, teachers should be tailoring the offer to their students, not the other way around. I.e., they should not have let you go. Especially since you seemed very comfortable with the level and fellow dancers (I've been to a few classes with younger fellow pupils myself). My opinion. :) Edit: ok, Reykjavík needs to brush up on its offers!!! Hope you find a nice and challenging place soon ❤
@bypatriciajones7 ай бұрын
It was pretty serious but it wasn't a conservatoire or anything but I couldn't have said it any better... Reykjavík really needs to keep up and update their offers but I'm trying not to be stuck on that line of thinking and try to be more positive going foward

I don't get some of that. You're not going professional (I think?), why would they care if you can keep up? And then, I am trying to understand the issue with the levels, but I've been a beginner (maybe beginner/improver) for over 3 years. I've got people in my class ranging from 17 to 60+ years old, average is probably 28/30. I used to take intermediate level class when I was super into that and wanted to do as much as possible, but downgraded to lower level by myself, because I couldn't keep up. Why are they so serious over there about the progression? As adult dancers, we've got different goals. I am actually thinking about taking absolute beginner class just so that I can cover the basics again, a step back can be beneficial, if - like me - you've never done ballet when you were younger.
@bypatriciajones7 ай бұрын
I think they didn't understand why was I doing this in the first place, why did I actually wanted to take more serious classes to get to pointe when I was so much older than the teenagers that they usually get as students. The concept of doing ballet for fun as an adult is not something that they are used to. Because the truth is that I don't mind not being able to keep up... I like it because for me that's a challenge! But I also need a bit of room to ask questions and maybe have someone break down a few steps so I can actually learn, and that's what I didn't get there.
@agnieszkaluunelotien25897 ай бұрын
@@bypatriciajones sounds like this studio wasn't a good fit for you. and it is their mistake and it was their responsibility to advise you that their classes were not suitable for you, early on, if it collided with their goals as a studio, why would they lead you on like that - I don't get it. As professionals and dance teachers they knew exactly what they signed up for by accepting you as a student - you didn't take classes before, you were certain age, what were they expecting? that they can catapult you into the level and place in time where other girls were or had a potential to be? Just baffles me. I think you'll be much happier among mature students in a very different environment. But I also think - and I mean that with best of intentions - you need to be humble, the higher level you do, the more efficient you need to be with picking up steps. That comes from being a beginner long enough, and then improver/intermediate long enough, I heard you saying that beginner was too easy, advanced was just right. But maybe advanced level was too much too soon? A little bit of challenge is ok, but faking it until you make it too much is not a way to go either. Shortcut to injury for sure or a way to pick up some bad habits that are hard to unlearn. If you had access to it - open level class could be great for you, because in there all levels have a class together and there's some basic stuff and some more advanced stuff, and you can just do the level of exercise that you're comfortable with while observing more experienced dancers. I kind of admire you, but as I said - I've been a beginner for over 3 years now, at nearly 36 years old, and I humbly admit that this is still where I belong. There is stuff I do rather well, there is stuff that is just ok, there are moves and steps that I still haven't mastered or don't know them even, nevermind attempting them. And I know there's no point in jumping levels until I am a solid beginner and all little skills and steps come together. Why rush? I've got all the time in the world.
