Gosh you’re a good fellow, not only do you clean up the foreshore, tell us about the history of your finds, take us places WE’D never go and tell us about the busiest city in the world, but you give some precious finds to your pals, who we know would kill to find those things themselves, you feed the wildlife, even throwing the bun into the water so they don’t have to eat the gravel with it, you obviously adore your cats and are an all-round good citizen! Heya. All well. Proof I still watch ;) I have a stupid question. Maybe asked but, not by me, as far as I know. Not a joke. What is the difference between mudlarking and archaeology? They must be related, albeit distantly. Have a good week :) And, as I'm here, I wonder if those who dropped the monies 'panicked' because they couldn't find it, after all, old money had more value that new money.

hey Si! Not sure if its a thing everywhere or not, but those "squished" pennies are a tourist-y souvenir here in the states (or in SF at the very least lol). There are little machines with a crank on the side, you put a penny in and crank it through some rollers till it comes out flat like that. Pretty cool to see it done with a coin that is so foreign to me!
@Sifinds
@Sifinds 6 ай бұрын
Cheers. Yes I’ve heard of penny squash machine but not halfpenny ones over here. Don’t they stamp the name of the attraction on there too?
@wirebug42
@wirebug42 6 ай бұрын
@@Sifinds yeah true, a lot of them let you put your name on there or the name of the attraction, but I have seen them without as well. Good to know I’m not the only one who thought the flattened halfpenny was so interesting. Do you know around what time period the halfpenny was discontinued? As a Yank I have no real clue but I’m pretty certain you lot don’t still use them in circulation lol. But knowing when they fell out of use would give at least a rough indication of when that could’ve been squished. Keep up the vids btw! Love your content so much. Had never heard of mudlarking before your channel, and the idea that you can stroll down a riverbank in the middle of your city and find coins, pipes, etc that are literally older than my entire country really blows my mind. Over here we get excited about something from the early 20th century, meanwhile for you guys that same thing would probably just be “in the way” of whatever artifact you’ve bent down to pick up for the first time since the Romans. Don’t ever forget that, you’re very lucky!!

Do oth❤er places have machines that squash coins and emboss a new design on them? Here in the States at some touristy places and museums they have such machines. Different types, i.e. hand cranked or motorized. You put a penny or quarter or whatever the particular machine is set up for, in one slot and the money to pay to make it go in another and then turn it on or crank as the case may be. Out comes your coin,smashed and elongated, with words or a design pertaining to the venue on it. My daughter, now 38 years old, had quite a collection when she was young. ❤

I've grown up in a town that has a train station and yard all my life. .. When I was around 15 or so I got it in my head, "hey I bet nobody always found their "track coins" flattened because they usually bounce after being hit and end up just inside the few inches of ballast under the rail..." Well I took a coffee can down to the station and in about an hour I had half a can of -flat money-..!! I was stopped by a lineman, " You think it's funny to put coins on the track?!? That's not safe, I can report you etc... etc.... I looked up and said very disrespectfully ,,, You think I'd put this much on the tracks?.....(showed him the half full coffee can)... He smirked, and said,, "I wont say anything,, if you split that with me.... I smiled and didn't mind... Fond memory to this day..

Good Grief! The hair on your 45rpm! I've got a Calico that's worse. Damn Sheddy Cat! The Leatherman can be a quality multi-tool fetching $100. US or more. The Douglas bottle clean up nicely. Spanish Fly hair tonic. Could also be applied to more sensitive areas as an aphrodisiac. So they say...... I love the off-center hand stamped old coins I'd love to have one but I'm not that into numismatics and I balk at the prices. My oldest is a George III Crown for about $20.. Still way over spot value. Free for the finding on the Thames isn't an option for this Okie.

Great you were able to return that guy's bag and stuff.....although, the Leatherman tool is illegal for UK carry as it has a lockable blade.....he needs to be very careful! (Annoying as hell that the lunatics who love to go around stabbing each other have ruined legitimate use of tools for so many!) Love your films. 😊

I recon the small black clay pipe was for smoking opium back in’t day! Had a google and the shape is the same. I don’t think it’s for tobacco. 🤔 great video Si! Keep em coming ❤

THere were small machines, the size of bubble gum machines, that you could put your penny in and it squashes and stretch the penny. Many were at tourist shops

There is a place near where I live where you could put pennies on the tracks and I always found them after they were squished! This was in southern California in the U.S.A. I am envious of you because of course there is nowhere where I live that you could find all of the goodies that you find.

Is the bead made from carnelian?.... was the lump of stone used as ballast?, which was needed for return journeys

Also, how ironic that I just came across your page and you found a bottle with my name and I’m as bald as bald can be. 😂😂

Thanks for another great video; sorry about your drone, though! My dad worked for the Milwaukee Road Railway when I was a kid, and we lived just a few blocks from the very busy -- back then -- tracks in St. Paul, MN. We would put pennies on the tracks, and they got flattened much more than yours, to the point that there would be nothing discernable on them afterwards. We didn't do it often, and never with anything but pennies (our smallest denomination here in the US), because every coin was currency, and back in the 60s, even a penny might buy a gum ball from a machine at the drug store. A flattened one, not so much! The closest I've come to mudlarking was walking along those old tracks as a kid, and finding bits and bobs that had fallen off the trains. From taconite pellets (an iron ore product from the mines in northern Minnesota) to broken RR lanterns tossed aside, as well as unidentifiable bits that were often the most interesting of all. We once found some piles of mystery grain that we took home and spread on the ground. It grew quickly, and we were able to identify it as oats. Our pet rabbits loved the immature stems, and the plants re-seeded themselves and grew in that plot for years. Fun where you find it!
