My first time watching Mr Holland's Opus(1995). This one surprised me with the expanse of time covered and it went in a lot of directions I could have never predicted. Is it a perfect movie? Not by a long shot, but darn it I couldn't help but be moved over and over. I hope you enjoyed my Mr Holland's Opus movie reaction & commentary

One of things I most appreciate about this story is how flawed Holland is, and how hard and well-earned his journey to being a wiser, more compassionate person is. It's a human thing that many of us don't always realize about ourselves, and it's on the brave side of the screenplay to be upfront about how much in the wrong he is so often, and how hard the lessons are.

My husband has 90% hearing loss, but he is an excellent bass player. He makes me proud. I am sight impaired and I was on the Kentucky All State choir in 92. I know my music. My husband is a miracle. The way he makes music assessable to the hearing impaired really warms my heart.

"Playing music is supposed to be fun. It's about heart, it's about feelings, moving people, and something beautiful, and it's not about notes on a page. I can teach you notes on a page, I can't teach you that other stuff." Fun Fact: Every person in the film that portrayed a deaf person is deaf in real life. Broadway Star Fact: Jean Louisa Kelly, who plays Rowena, did all her own singing and dancing she is in fact a trained singer, dancer, and actress. In addition to movies she has done a number of stage productions including playing Snow White, the understudy for Rapunzel, and Little Red Riding Hood in the original "Into The Woods" Broadway production. Music Enthusiast Fact: Julian Lennon, the son of The Beatles John Lennon, whose music is featured prominently in the film, sings the film's main theme "Cole's Song" on the soundtrack. Near the film's conclusion the piecemeal orchestra, made up of former students of Mr. Holland, plays his long awaited composition. As Mr. Holland demonstrates throughout the film, he is a great admirer of John Lennon, so it is only fitting that the very last note played in his piece of music is exactly the same struck piano chord heard in "A Day In The Life" by The Beatles (although The Beatles chord is an E Major while the Mr. Holland chord appears to be an F Major).

So sad that has to be a "fun fact." We never say "Fun fact: ever black person in the film is actually black in real life." Well... not any more... Maybe one day deaf people will have the same representation.

Great reaction! Not only is this a lovely story of Mr. Holland's 30 year highs and lows of being a teacher, but it is a very sad tale of when schools in the 90's began cutting music programs from the curriculum. As a mom, proud to say I had musical lessons available when attending elementary and went to a high school that had a marching band and drama class. I totally understand Mr. Holland's fight to keep music/arts in school and it still happening because not all school's still don't have a music budget.

I think Mr. Holland, as a young man, had a young man's dreams of greatness acknowledged, in the same way he saw "the greats" acknowledged. Then life happened and he settled for something else, but in his mind it was always just a temporary thing - until he really put his creativity into teaching and it became something more. He had highs and lows in his life, but he kept on going and learned from his mistakes. Then circumstances took away his creative outlet in teaching and the reality that he would never have that greatness he dreamed of as a young man caught up to him. However, the people he helped and the people who loved him gave him the greatest gift - the truth about his real greatness. And I like to believe that the governor of the state would find a way to keep the arts in the public schools in her state. I remember around the time this movie came out there really was a big push to eliminate the arts from public schools as a way to "cut the unnecessary fat" from school budgets and "go back to the basics" of concentrating on reading and math and etc. This movie was a beautiful, sappy push back against those ideas, and I love it.

I played clarinet in school. Girlie's embouchure is mush. That's why she keeps honking on the reed. He's right that she has too much lip on the mouthpiece. 😊 ETA: Our long time band director retired when I was in high school. The school did a concert tribute for him like in this movie. He passed of cancer a few years ago. My sister and I went to the funeral, and there were so many former students!

The thing you have to remember about that first girl with the red hair- she had been playing for 3 years. He was surprised when he found out how long she'd been playing. She already knew all the technical stuff, it was just her head getting in the way. So they're not saying as long as you have heart you'll play beautifully. They were saying heart is a necessary component, one that she had been forgetting because she was so in her head comparing herself to all her gifted family members and being so desperate to get it right.

My father was a high school history teacher for over 20 years (he was also a trumpet player who had to choose early on between getting married and starting a family or pursuing his musical career playing jazz) We always knew that his students loved him and random people who heard my last name would always tell me he was their favorite teacher but when he passed unexpectedly nothing could have prepared us. On the way to the church for the funeral both sides of the street for two blocks were packed with current and former students because there was no more room in the building for people to pay their respects. It was truly moving and humbling and a testament to just how much one person can touch so many lives.

As a musician of 32 years, Mr. Holland’s Opus is one of my favorite movies. I remember being a teenager crying my eyes out at the end, and hating Principal Walters, hehe. While I’m not a teacher, this movie did motivate me to pursue a career in music education, and play as often as possible. Interesting fact: There were four Academy Award Winning/nominated actors in this film: Olympia Dukakis, Terrance Howard, Richard Dreyfus, and William H. Macy. Chris. - if you remember 'Top Gun: Maverick', Jean Louisa Kelly (Rowena Morgan) also played Sarah Kazansky, Iceman's wife in the brief scene before Maverick and Iceman "talk" in his home office. - Gertrude, as a young girl was played by Alicia Witt who started as a child actress in the David Lynch version of 'Dune' (1984) as Alia Atreides, and grew up basically in front of the camera. She was also a classically trained pianist and a singer...which she has shown off in her film and TV work. The adult Gertrude (aka The Governor) was played by Tony Award-winning actress Joanna Gleason, who originated the role of The Baker's Wife in Stephen Sondheim's 'Into The Woods' original cast. The production was videotaped, so it's available to see that production from 1988 online, and it's the same role later played by Emily Blunt in the Disney film. - Iris Holland was played by the late Glenne Headly, who was just an amazing actress. She passed from a pulmonary embolism in 2017. Some of her best films are 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' holding her own with Michael Caine and Steve Martin (a hysterically funny movie!) and playing Tess Trueheart in Warren Beatty's 'Dick Tracy' (one of the most amazing, fun, and faithful comic book movies ever made with a cast that includes Madonna, Al Pacino, Mandy Patinkin, Dustin Hoffman, and Paul Sorvino!). She always elevated whatever film or TV show she did. This movie always hits me in the feels...sometimes it's hokey and cheezy, but...sometimes as moviegoers, we need those moments.

Brass instruments have a spit valve for a reason. If you don't empty the extra moisture that builds up while playing, the sound coming out of the horn literally starts to gargle and pop. So, it may be gross to realize you must empty your recycled spit somewhere but hey, reed players have no choice but to suck the extra moisture that builds up in the mouthpiece back into their mouths. All the way from 6th grade to Bachelors degree, I never thought twice about it. Only after I became a parent did I think OMG that's disgusting!!! LOL

I never watched this movie before because I thought the title was "Mr. Holland, Soap Us", and I didn't think that was a nice title at all for a movie about a teacher.

I agree, terrible title for a film about a teacher, but most definitely funny. Fun fact: I still sing, "Oh what fun it is to ride in one horse soap and sleigh. HEY!"

Every teacher you ever had was a human being with failings and unfulfilled dreams. They do what they do because they love it but usually, they never learn what impact they have, they can only hope. If you can take a moment to thank a teacher, please do so. If you can track down one of your own teachers from the past, even better. They usually will remember you, believe it or not, and they would love to hear how you turned out. - I taught for 40 years so I really identify with Mt Holland!

HEY Chris!! I had a Mr. Holland in my life. My high school was actually a Jr./Sr. high school, 7th through 12th. My first year in 7th (1976) I took piano class, never ever having touched a piano before, but loving the music that came from it. Mr. Mohr was not only the piano teacher, but he was also the band teacher, and the marching band teacher, and taught every instrument anyone wanted to learn. I loved his class so much, I took piano again in 10th grade and 12th. He stayed at that school until it closed in 1990, then went to the new middle school that was built. He's retired now, but those of us that had Mr. Mohr always ALWAYS speak highly of him. He was the best...kinda HOT too. Us girls always gushed over him and still do on Facebook when his name is mentioned. lol Teachers who love what they do and you can see the passion they have for it are the best and everyone will always learn from them, they can't help but learn from them, I think anyway!! Great reaction!! The movie "Amadeus" is a 1984 American period biographical drama film. It's GREAT! Just a small hint!! 😁 Have a great day!! ~Dawne

As a former music teacher, I'll say it for the millionth time: "You'll never see a weed growing in a football stadium, but they'll cut music in the schools in order to maintain that field." Schools without a full music program IS a morgue waiting to happen soon. What about the majority of kids who don;t play sports? There's no hero worship for them for playing Beethoven, Dvorak. etc. We are a nation of musical ignoramuses. The appreciation is mostly never going to happen. Not like the coaches...and I was always hoping that Mr. Walters does deserve the "clap"...if you know what I mean...and yes, I conducted this American Symphony band arrangement back in the late 1990's. and Rossini's "An Italian in Algiers" Overture [band arrangement], musicals etc., so screw all the Mr. Walters of the world. Too many administrators and school interfere with rather than help the music program, unwittingly. You end up playing politics more than really teaching.

I've always thought one of the best things about this movie is how honest it is. We are not perfect, we will make mistakes. Marriages will have hard times. Life will throw us curve balls that we are not prepared for. The point is to keep on doing your best in what you can do and while you may not think other people appreciate your efforts, you are making the world a better place when you try.

I'm THRILLED you are reacting to this! I've been dying for someone to watch this beautiful movie! btw, I learned that an opus is the singular form of an opera. (just one song from an opera)
@TTM9691
@TTM9691 Жыл бұрын
An opus is basically a work of art, usually referring to a musical composition. The composer will (or would) use it to catalog his or her work. So if you look at, say, a classical music album cover.....and you look on the title of the composition, it might say something like: C.M. Jennings: Concerto In G (Op. 6). (Op. stands for opus) Conversationally, one refers to an artist's greatest work as their "magnum opus", or sometimes just "opus", meaning their greatest achievement. (ie: "Kubrick's magnum opus was "2001", etc) It may also have other, more obscure meanings but in the context of this movie, that's what it means. And I think HIS "opus" was what he gave to his students.

@@TTM9691 The terms "opus" and "opera" both evolved from the root word meaning "a work."

Yes, this film is very good. For emotional films from the same era, about teachers, AND based on true stories, I recommend "Lean On Me" (Morgan Freeman playing Joe Clark) and "Stand and Deliver" (Edward James Olmos playing Jaime Escalante).
