Foo Fighters is my favorite band, and the joy of watching you discover the many facets of them is just so heartwarming! A lot of people are suggesting Times Like These in the comments, and I heartily agree. I highly recommend the live version at the Taylor Hawkins tribute at Wembley. It was the first song that Foo Fighters performed publicly without Taylor, and Dave had written the song about a rift between him and Taylor and them resolving it-- the line "do I stay or run away and leave it all behind" was wondering if Foo Fighters would break up and if Dave would join Queens of the Stone Age (with whom he had just recorded and was playing some shows with, while Foo Fighters were taking a break.) The performance of Times Like These is absolutely gut-wrenching, but so cathartic. It is such a poignant example of the relationship, love, support, and shared grief of not just the members of the band and their friends and family, but the way the audience palpably send their love and energy to Dave and the band to be able to make it through the performance! I wasn't there, just watching it live, but I will never, ever forget it!

11:30 The pigtails do a lot, but Dave is really selling the character here. Foo Fighters did a lot of goofy weirdness in their early videos (Everlong and Big Me spring to mind), but what makes them so entertaining is that the band has no reservations about going full ham.

The Song in the Background at the beginning of the video is the Chorus from Everlong, which was their biggest hit in their previous album at the time. To give some perspective, Learn to Fly was their biggest hit from their 3rd album and Everlong was from their second album. Dave Grohl had a tradition of having a "musac" (Pronounced Myew-zack) theme play at the beginning of their music video which was from a song off their previous album. Their first album, the self-titled "Foo Fighters", was more of a grunge album. It was also technically a solo project. With only a few exceptions, every part on every track on the first album was played by David Grohl. The band was formed after the fact for touring. (Side note: Dave Grohl actually has a limited range for a lead singer. But I agree, he uses it very well. Take a look at live performances from their 1st album, and you'll see Dave going beyond his range in live performances.) On their second album, titled "The Color and the Shape", was probably their most successful album ever. This was technically the first album that the band members contributed on. However, the drummer was sub-par in Dave's mind. He would, without notice to Goldsmith, the 1st drummer hired to play for the Foo Fighters, re-record the drumming from almost all of the tracks on the 2nd Album. It was controversial at the time, and the Foo Fighters almost broke up during the second album. Nate, the Bass Player, was lifelong friends with Goldsmith (they were both part of the same band before playing for the Foo Fighters). He almost left over this. Dave managed to smooth things over with Nate and he stayed. Pat Smear, the 1st lead guitarist, didn't appreciate the level of drama in the band at the time. To make matters worse, Dave divorced his first wife, and Pat took Dave's ex-wife side in the matter. Pat would leave during the promotion of the Color and the Shape, shortly after Tyler Hawkins joins as the drummer. To take Pat's place as the lead guitarist, Franz, a member of Scream (a DC punk band that Dave drummed for before drumming for Nirvana). Basically, Dave would play about half the parts on "The Color and the Shape", with Pat and Nate handling their parts. Tyler Hawkins would join the bad after recording the album and be in the Everlong video. The video for "My Hero" would take place after Pat left, and Franz starts playing for the band. So, there are different line-ups for the music video for the 2nd album, and it's mostly Dave still. Franz leaves the Foo Fighters by the end of the touring for the 2nd album. Their 3rd album, "There is Nothing Left to Lose", is the only time that the Foo Fighters is officially a 3-member band. On the studio recording Dave handles the drumming for "Learn to Fly", but Hawkins does the drumming for the rest of it. Also, Dave is handling all of the Guitar parts for this album. So, in many respects, Foo Fighters is still, primarily, a solo project; or at least, it's Dave's band lead by his creative control. The first 3 albums are special in that Dave's personal creative force is dominant and prevalent in the process. However, the 4th album, "One by One" is what I consider to be the Foo Fighters 1st True Album as a Band, and not as a solo project. By the 4th album, each band member has equal creative control for song writing, performance, and production, with few exceptions. What I feel is the true Foo Fighters' sound is capture in their first track on the 4th album, "All my Life". Also, Chris Shiflett is the official lead guitarist at this time, and all four members are resigned to playing their respective instruments on every track with few exceptions. In short, I recommend "All my Life", and maybe "Times Like These" from "One by One" for your next Foo Fighters reviews. Later on, "Wasting Light" (which is arguably my most favorite album after "The Color and the Shape") has "Rope" and "Walk", which are also right up your alley if you like the Foo Fighters Sound. By that point, Pat Smear as rejoined the band as a 3rd guitarist, and a full member.

I think I had that Fall-in-love-with-Foo-Fighters-Moment about 7 years ago. I don't know what was the first song that really sparked it, but it was this song and the original "Rocking 1000" video of this that really sticks to memory. I think my favorite album over all is "Wasting Light". This might be my favorite music video full stop. Thank you for sharing!

I'm pretty sure that the Muzak theme in the background at the beginning when Jack Black was "doctoring" the airplane galley was the melody from Foo Fighters' _Everlong._

Great video as always, Elizabeth. What keeps me coming back to videos like this is the sheer joy you seem to get from music that does the exact same to us listeners. It's been a great journey seeing you discover the likes of AIC, SOAD, Incubus and now Foo Fighters - all artists that have played a huge part in my (and im sure alot of other subscribers) life. Thanks for sharing your journey and looking forward to more great content.

Please look into analyzing Paul McCartney's voice from the live album "Wings Over America" (1976). His voice on the album ranges from smooth as silk, to bluesy, to raspy rocker. The man was a beast in his prime!

New subscriber as of a week or two; I genuinely really love your analyses of some of my favorite rock, metal and classic rock bands from my childhood that I grew up with because of my generation or because of my Dad; your insight really gives words to a lot of what I felt made so many of these songs special and standout when it comes to lyrics and the talent of the vocalists in their craft! Thank you for applying your talents and skills in such a way, I genuinely feel as if your channel has rekindled a spark I lost for a long time when it comes to appreciating music; I never stopped loving it, but that love now feels new all over again. As far as recommendations go, I know you’ve covered the metal band Kamelot in the past, but I didn’t see a video covering “The Haunting (Somewhere In Time)”, so I wholeheartedly recommend that song (if you have covered it already and I just didn’t see it, I apologize for missing it!). There is something about it that really stands out to me that I feel deserves an in-depth analysis. I admit I am a bit biased due to relating to the content of the lyrics, but there is something that I feel is both beautifully hopeful and hauntingly(!) sad about it that brings such an interesting mix of emotions to mind. Looking forward to potentially seeing a future video on it, and to recommending more songs in the future! Consider me a lifetime fan of yours! ☺️🙏❤️🔥

What an amazing message on the video 🫶 Elizabeth your message starting at 20:05 is so wonderful and needs to be heard. Yes stepping up handling the moment/s cause we don't always have a manual in life, like becoming a parent, we can read all about it but once we have a baby at home it can all change quickly and they do not come with an instruction manual. It can be the hardest time ever as well as the most joyful.

I agree! Skin and Bones is a beautiful stripped down concert that gives you a much better sense of Dave’s easy, soft voice and Wembley is a great version of the big stadium shows that the Foos do so well. Great suggestions!
