Lmao, they weren't faking this. Heidi was a meek, submissive little girl who let Spencer take control of her life. That is why she lost her friend Lauren. And here we see Spencer do the same thing to her family. Spencer's behaviour was so crazy that they got kicked out of the show. (Imho it looked like he was using drugs at the time.) And soon after Heidi and Spencer got separated and rumours were flying that Heidi is going to take a divorce. Spencer cleaned up his act and they got back together. These days Spencer is far less disrespectful towards people.

Spencer constantly smeared the rest of the cast on twitter, blew through millions of dollars, threatened a producer who was trying to escalate the drama during all this Holly/Stephanie real-life conflict, and isolated Heidi from her family COMPLETELY. Darlene and Holly both tried to break into their house to get Heidi out, and they would call the police on them and didn't talk to them for YEARS. Heidi sued Adam Divello for sexual assault (right after they got fired) even though he was obviously innocent, Spencer showed up to the finale party in a disguise/wig and wasn't allowed in, they cut ties with Perez who then admitted that Spencer started Lauren's sex tape rumor and smeared Stephanie, they faked trying to sell a lesbian playboy sex tape featuring Heidi (it didn't exist), they pretended to be seperated to rehab Heidi's image and then moved to Costa Rica with their four (!!!) tiny dogs, and got arrested on gun charges. Spencers parents bailed them out of Costa Rica jail and then let them crash at their beach house in Santa Barbera (the one they go to in Season 2 of the show), but then they illegally squatted there for like 7 years, remodeled the house with other people's credit cards, and were STILL somehow booking WifeSwap and other shows to make ends meet. I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting, but ^this stuff was NOT fake.

Now that we're all adults, and have probably (at least most of us) experienced toxic relationships... We can see that all Spencer was doing was alienating Heidi from everyone that loves her so HE could not only be in full control of her, he would be the ONLY person in her life. She would have no one to vent to, to run to, or to share her life with other than him. He manipulated her, and she gave him ALL the control.

Rewatching the series, reading or watching interviews over the years and looking back. I think in Spencer's mind he really was defending and protecting Heidi. Her mom did seem to always make things about herself and made cutting jokes and comments towards Heidi. After Heidi's surgery, when she almost died it probably sent him over the deep end. I think they both come from dysfunctional families and are too emotionally immature to handle real things, in productive ways. That mixed with all the fame and sudden money.....
