Every time I’ve seen someone detained, they specifically take long enough to make the person miss their flight. I can only assume it’s some crappy way to make sure they ruin whatever possible nefarious plans are happening. I assume they’re tracking the person at the next airport and trying to see if they see anything on cctv that repeats at both times at the receiving airport. It’s very odd.

By "security" Don means US Customs... US bound flights originating from major Canadian airports go through US Customs and Immigration clearance at the Canadian airport of departure. This allows the flight to be treated the same as a US domestic flight... without the need for customs clearance at the airport of arrival.

But, security did exactly what you went through, wiped the money, my phone , everything. Told me nothing. Landed at home, they brought dogs on the plane!! Never made eye contact with me, nothing. Can’t stand to hear this. How tragic a start. This is the last thing you need. Yes, I got pulled in the UK last cruise as I was boarding after being grilled and patted down and had all my bags opened. Was the last to board. A little old 72 year old with her 85 year old husband. On the flight out of the US TSA took my diabetic medical supplies and wouldn’t even let me watch them go thru the bag and wouldn’t accept my doctor’s letter. Got ready to board cruise opened my bag to find supplies were not returned. $300+ of diabetic sensors. It took over a year to get partially reimbursed. That trip was anything but our relaxing post Covid trip. Wishing you a much better trip tomorrow!

We are USA Citizens, and when coming back from Budapest, Hungary thru Dulles - security detained me - I am a female, traveling with my husband - in our mid 50’s - decently dressed - bringing back NO items from Hungary - not even a T-Shirt. They held me for nearly an hour and we almost missed our flight home (and we had been traveling for 17 hours at this point!) Shouldn’t citizens have some sort of right to ask why we are being detained?! I did not want to cause any trouble - of course - we just wanted to fly home to Orlando. That terrible experience makes us never, EVER want to go thru IAD ever again .
@jfmezei
@jfmezei 3 күн бұрын
You weren't detailed by IAD, you were detained by US customs. But some customs facilities are more pedantic and have different quotas for randomly destroying one's trip. They won't tell you why you are being detained because they would reveal "intelligence" on what ifnormation they acquired to trigger them deciding you were a risk. Telling you that you were randomly selected will reduced your stress level, and part of the random testing is to evaluate the customs agent's ability to detect whether a stressed passenger isn't guilty versus who who knowingly bought books that are now banned in the USA and nervous he/she has been caught and will have to spend 15 years in jail.

My parents were in Kuwait for 3 years and when they returned to California they came through customs in Honolulu. They went through basically what you went through only they stripped my mother and examined her stark naked! Needless to say she was horrified, terrified and mortified. My parents were about 55 years old, never even had a parking ticket but my father had taken a project managers position working directly for the Amir of Kuwait. They too were detained for many hours and when they were released they were left to repack their luggage and somehow make their way to catch the next plane leaving Honolulu for California. Needless to say, they never got over it. Neither have I. I recently have learned customers no longer can “detain” passengers. Well obviously they thats a bad rumor. So sorry you had to put up with the extensive search. I had an issue at Fort Lauderdale airport. My carry-on backpack triggered a search for a wedge shaped anomaly. I got the third degree, a frisk, a swab of the contents of my backpack which came up positive for something. Husband was waiting nearby and it was almost boarding time for our flight to Seattle, then on to Vancouver. Finally was allowed to proceed just in time for boarding. The "anomaly" was a vacuum packed wedge of Dutch Gouda cheese I had bought from a port area vendor in Curacao just before all aboard time! Grrrrr.

no sympathy for not knowing FAA rules. I know food IS allowed as you board a plane, but it must be labeled, not liquid or gel, and follow 3-1-1 rule, in clear small baggie. Since no product (food) with THC is allowed, can understand the FAA questioning your cheese from a "vendor." How do they know it does not contain THC ????? Was your cheese labeled ???? Was the vac. packed beg a "see thru" like you must use (we all use zip-lock bags)? Did you take the bag with the cheese out of your backpack and put it in tray ???? Don't blame FAA when you make problems for yourself. All you had to do is put cheese in tray and state "I have a wedge of cheese here without a proper label of any kind." In 40 years of plane travel (incl. Europe, Asia) I never had a problem. SPEAK UP ahead of time.
@BCYvonneEd

@@esciteach7997 It WAS vacuum packed and properly labelled just like the Gouda I buy here in Canada. I wasn't going through customs, just security, otherwise I WOULD have declared it. I have had delays with immigration in Toronto because my husband didn't show up for an appointment for his citizenship application. Problem, we were traveling and our mail held when the "demand" for appearance happened. They could see from the date of our departure to the time they pulled us aside, there was no way we would have seen the appointment. Of course they did their best to detain us long enough to miss our flight, but luckily the flight was delayed and barely made it. They should also have to give you a reasonable explanation up front as to you being detained. No more Gestapo like tactics. We still live in free countries (US and Canada).

Don I’m sorry to hear about your experience. I’m ten years retired from a career with the airlines. Your experience is not uncommon with frequent travelers that fit your profile. The triggers are the varied patterns and not spending time in the cities you visit. One of my friends in the tech industry was able to have his company send a letter to immigration which he carried a copy. The letter seemed to help but any one with as many pages with stamps in your passport will eventually run into this kind of problem. Safe travels.

I'm an American. I have been in the travel industry for 50+ years. It has happened to me a couple of times. I worked for Braniff International in the 70s and early 80s. I had led astray FAM trip to Panama and Columbia. A month later I went to Germany. On my return I was stopped. They went through my bags 3 full times. I was then taken to a room, partially strip searched, patted down, they went through my check book. Then they said I could go. No explanation. I later thought since I had been to Columbia, then to Europe, they thought I was running drugs. I worked for the airlines and I was in their terminal at DFW. Another time again in the 70s and friend and I drove from Washington to Vancouver for dinner and then back. We were stopped, they went through the car with a fine tooth comb. We were detained for a couple of hours. Perhaps because we were in our 20s and had beards they stopped us. I have never been so angry in my life, especially the DFW incident.

I was in charge of a group where one individual had a Jamaican passport. They held him just long enough to miss the flight by 5 minutes. @ the point is it seems the objective is to make you miss your flight, and the question is why? There has to be a point beyond because they can. Like are they setting up surveillance at the other airport, and seeing if there are any differences between flights? If that’s so, why do they let people keep their phone? It’s just odd

Dad why are we still waiting when there's no one else here? I went back up to the counter again. Then the guy that pulled us over came in and said oh you guys are still waiting? You guys can leave. Yes, I have been detained. Mine was in Japan in the 1990s. I was in my 40s and traveling for business. The agents were suspicious that a woman in her 40s would be on a flight alone, so they pulled me aside just like you. They went through all of my luggage, my purse, and my laptop. I did not have a cell, just a pager back then. They kept me for 4 hours and then rebooked me on a flight back from Tokyo to San Francisco. They were not nice at all about any of it. I was pissed.

Hi Don, this exact thing happened to us a few years back. We were leaving from Toronto, travelling to Hawaii to catch a Celebrity cruise. It was the first time that we booked business class. Due to the same crap you experienced, we lost out on our Business class seats and rather than a direct flight had to jump on the next available flight and two connecting flights after that. It would be much easier to swallow if we were given a reason, but we were not. It felt like they took their sweet time, and just enough time that we missed our flight. Sorry this happened to you Don but glad you, and us, were able to catch our ships in time.

Don, 1st of all, so sorry to hear about your trouble with Customs. They can be very difficult some time. As a friend of mine would say, you give someone a little bit of authority they think they can rule the world. 2nd thing though, I think this is a good lesson for a lot of us who travels a lot to make sure that we have travel insurance or purchase a trip with a credit card which includes travel insurance; specifically, trip interruption, trip cancellation...etc. An annual travel insurance runs less than $300 here in the USA. For us frequent floaters, it would be highly advisable to have it.

I had a similar problem driving into Canada. Perhaps because I was a Florida resident using a rental car and driving alone, CBSA decided to put me in secondary. I spent 3 hours being interrogated and having my phone and laptop searched through. They were very rude about it as well. They demanded my passwords and barked at me for questioning them about it. I’ve traveled across many international borders - never had that kind of jackboot treatment. When they found nothing, a guard sent me on my way with a frown. Haven't been to Canada since

@@genageeraert8039 No, I asked a valid question in a quiet polite manner regarding giving my passwords in a public room with other travelers right next to me. The response was a loud barking order (not an answer to the question) as one might expect from a jackboot tyrant. Since you somehow know they were doing their job, were you a guard at the Coutts, Alberta border crossing in 2019 and that's how you were trained to interact with the public?
