Well since at Florence they certainly COULD have safely allowed people off the train to stretch their legs or have a smoke! I wonder if Coach passengers (for whom this must have been hell) were fed or were made to purchase? And those snarky announcements by the sadistic conductor -- lucky that passengers didn't tear up the train out of frustration.... There was an unaffected track and the Auto Train was being passed by trailing trains... Could it not have been backed up to the crossover and moved to the clear track??
@matthewbbenton
@matthewbbenton 3 жыл бұрын
@@ConcertShutterbug I assume there were many other trains backed up on that track, so they couldn’t just back up and unload everyone. It’s like being stuck in a traffic jam on a highway. Let’s hope those poor coach passengers were fed - I have to think they would have been. This whole story is amazing because my worst travel experience was flying out of Florence - or trying to. Long story short, after two days of mechanical issues with the plane, the airline literally hired someone to drive me to Charlotte. Florence is like the Bermuda Triangle of domestic travel!

Always plan an extra day on Amtrak because they share the track with freight trains and you never know if you are going to be late so always plan to be late by at least a day. And that way if you’re early, you are glad but if you are late, you are prepared and bring extra toiletries and extra snacks and just expect to be late. We were on a train that was 18 hours late going from Washington state to North Dakota and we just enjoyed being on the train because we love trains. It worked out well and they brought us extra food and extra coffee and extra pop and whatever we wanted and I cannot give them more credit than I have because they were wonderful.

Sam, I commend you on your patience and fortitude. I am a recent subscriber to your channel and want to relate to you a similar experience I had but not as bad as yours. In the summer of 1979, I moved from western South Dakota to the Bay Area in California for college. By fall I was a little homesick and decided to fly home for Christmas. I had a great time with the family and then it was time to go. I got on the plane in Rapid City and flew to Salt Lake City, all was well. I didn't have to change planes so I sat while passengers disembarked and the new passengers boarded. Finally we took off. So far I had been on the plane for 4 hours. 2 hours or so later, we arrived in San Francisco and we couldn't land due to fog. So we circled to see if the fog would lift. It didn't. We continued to circle. And circle. And circle. We circled for 2 hours. Then they announced they were going to land us In Sacramento and they would bus us into San Francisco International. So off we went to Sacramento which took maybe an hour. 9 to 10 hours after boarding, I was able to get off that airplane. Then I had to get on a bus and ride for another 2-3 hours to the airport in SF. This was the age before cell phones so I had no way to contact my friends that were supposed to pick me up. Thank God they were there waiting for me!

I'm just imagining HT coming out of his sleeper car fully rested, showered, after watching some netflix and laying down to go to the dining car and goes "Man, this is awful!" and the coach passengers just riot after sitting in a chair worse than an office chair for 40 hours straight with no cigarettes breathing in the musky stench of 200 unbathed adults and the stench of unchanged baby diaper. Omg, lol.

I was stuck on a train for 4 hours between Lewisham and London Bridge in South East London, England in 2018. The worst thing was the lack of information from the train staff, letting us know what was happening. It’s normally a 10 minute journey!! Apparently the electrified rail became faulty and stopped working.

that kind of Amtrak train is an auto train. I believe that there's a short yard that it will load up its passengers with using the superliners then will hook up to the Amtrak autoracks and will then begin the journey. the locomotives are 2 p42DC's which will generate 8500 horsepower which is more than enough to get the train moving.

Well done Sam for booking a sleeper compartment. Evidently many were not so lucky. A better approach to customer relations practice, would be to make an announcement to passengers about delays at the earliest reasonable opportunity. Even if Amtrak isn't at fault for the derailed freight train, its assumption that no need for an update was necessary and mixed response to contingency planning may put off anyone on that train from using it in future.

Dude that's ~2.5 times, or 250% of the time you were told when you purchased your ticket. I would have asked for my money back. Something like this makes me never want to take a train haha. I can't imagine the # of negative reviews they got and how many potential customers they lost/lose when things like this happen. Passenger train industry here in the states is on life support, so this kind of thing is just one more nail in the lid.

If you want to be on time, take a plane. Train travel always has problems so plan on being late and then you will not be aggravated and this is what we learned. Traveling from Washington state to North Dakota several times in a 25 year period and we were never upset if we were late because we always had an extra night at the hotel before our relatives came to get us so we knew we would be late, so always plan on being late if you take a train.

Back in 2001 I rode an Amtrak sleeper from San Francisco to Chicago, to Washington (did the Smithsonian), to Orlando (did Disney World) then back to La. It was a fantastic trip except for 2 things, no meal in your cabin, you HAD to go to the dining car and be seated with other people. Sometimes the company you were seated with were nice other times you ate your meal with arseholes. But the worst thing was the incessant horn blowing. In first class you're at the front of the train and that's where the damn horn is. During the day it wasn't bad but trying to sleep at night...GEEZ !! The stewards were always nice, though none of the trains I rode on encountered any issues like this. I'd love to go back to the US one day and do the same trip again, despite the constant horn sounding.

You my dear man are amazing, not to mention patient. ONCE on a Via-Rail train from Windsor Ontario - Toronto, the train lost power about 45 min from Toronto. I knew this would mean a huge delay. I took matters into my own hands, exited the train (with my 8 yr old niece in hand) .. Two American passengers decided to follow me and us 4 walked about 2 km to the nearest town, called a taxi and took that into the city splitting the cost.

So i was in that train in of total 1 hour and 30 minutes. This is extrodinary long for a delay in the Netherlands and happens not much. I always thought this was very much but this was nothing compered to your situation with 40 hours delay. Much respect for being calm in that situation for so long! Also nice video!! :D

I'd rather be stuck on a train for 40 hours than stuck next to a whiny or badly spoiled child for 30 minutes. Last month, I flew from the Bay Area of California to Nashville. My flight was very early (5 AM); so, I arrived to the airport at around 3:15 AM and planned to sleep on the plane. The plane was filled with parents and children flying to Disney World in Florida. During the flight, a child behind me kept kicking my seat....for the ENTIRE flight. He even said, "Wake up. Wake up. Wake up" several times when I would doze off. His mother saw all of this too (because I tried to get her attention). Her response at the end of the flight was to apologize. She said, "I don't know how to control him."

Hi Sam, I know you probably not going to get to my comment, but here I go, your experience was definitely hell, I travel a lot by train, usually from Fort Lauderdale, my home town to Jacksonville, also GA, and SC, by cabin just like you. But I'm a model train collector so I do love trains. I was once is the same situation with a train derailment ahead of my train, and yes, mine also CSX, stuck on the train for about 12 hours, yikes :-(, they finally cleared the derailment, now this probably happened to you and you might not have been aware, derailments do cause rail damage, so they probably had to repairs the rails, which in somes cases takes a couple of hours. I also had a great cabin stuart who actually kept me posted more than the conductor had. Now in my case, I had a USMC shirt on and he happened to have served also in the MC and I was one of 6 passengers in my car which was great for personal service. Sam I really like this video, keep up the good work.

I traveled overnight once on Amtrak and I overall liked it but on the return trip it was not so good. A few people loaded up the seat next to them with junk so nobody could sit next to them, one person loaded up TWO seats with junk and slept on the floor. Then there were the people who insisted on talking loudly at a distance, one person wanted to talk about prescriptions and her adult disposable diapers after they turned down the lights so people could try and sleep. I would highly recommend travel by train BUT get a compartment. Don't risk the kind of people you might end up traveling with. They are not all too great.

This reminded me of when i used to ride the travel buses with my mom, from Bella Vista to Corrientes or Buenos Aires, we were travelling back from Buenos Aires to home when the bus stopped, i don't remember what it was but maybe it was a flat tire or the bus just ran out of fuel, we stayed there for about 2.5 hours or so.

As someone who works on Ft Belvoir, I driven past the Lorton station many times. And I wondered if I could take the auto train to visit family up North. Nope. And after hearing this story H3ll Nope! Thanks for answering that question, Sam.

I've heard the same comments from another senior conductor on a delayed Amtrak service travelling from Chicago to New York. Our train finally arrived 69 hours late

40 Hours, sorry to hear that Sam. Listening to the radio yesterday, they announced not to travel by train in the UK due to major disruptions. Never been stuck 40 hours but 4 once and managed to get the very last train by the skin of our teeth. So didn't get to my girlfriends house till gone 1am. Wish I lived in the USA.

Cool a double decker train 🚆!! I'm going on the Caledonian sleeper train for the first time on the 24th, I'm travelling via the Club Car so I'll get free breakfast, a toilet and shower in my room plus access to the restaurant which is practically a first class lounge. Only down part is I'll be in London for 7.10am so it will be an early start but going to the making of Harry Potter that day so I'll want to be up fresh. 40 hours sounds like hell on earth 🌎 Sam. What a shame 😔

It's so cool to See how travelling by train in the US works and looks like. It really seems a lot different then in europe. I really love travelling by train so this is very interesting for me. Thanks! 😊

I used to take Amtrak when I lived in college all the time. It really is much more comfortable than an airplane (albeit also much slower). I used to live in Orlando for about 10 years, I visited the Titanic museum several times, as well as the "dinner show" they offer. That sleeper car is pretty cool, and that you can take your car! I am getting married in Orlando and I refuse to fly in case my luggage gets lost and something happens to my dress, so we plan to drive. I would love a relaxing train ride but I live in Nashville now so VA is a bit too far to make that feasible. Thank you for documenting your journey though! I am sorry it took so long! I don't want to sound all Karen, but I would have put in a complaint about the conductors attitude. But hey you have a story to tell 😅

Hey Sam, have you ever thought of riding the Pere Marquette 1225 train in Michigan or the real-life, "Polar Express" from the 2004 Christmas movie?

I thought it was Amtrak when I saw the headline. Similar story, DC to Orlando. We missed our 1st day at Disney World. I love trains, hope we can do this better.

Sounds like a drag, the crew for sure should have been less brash. What I appreciate is that you understand the inpredictablilty of train travel. I hope you take the train sometime again because as you painted for the first half of the video, 90% of Amtrak journeys are like that. Thank you for sharing your experience 😊

Amtrak has 3 or 4 kinds of sleeping accommodations. You have the Roomette, which in my younger years, I called it the "economy" bedroom or the "Econo" for short. Then you have the "Deluxe" sleeper which is a bigger bedroom, where you even have your own shower! Then they have the family bedroom, and the fourth is the special bedroom which is reserved for those in wheelchairs or if you are a senior citizen and would have trouble with the steps. I love train travel. The railroad even was the main source of transportation that fed the passengers to the Titanic. The only downside to rail travel is that you have to deal with freight traffic. That is because on the east coast, that route is mostly owned by CSX. In Kirkwood, Union Pacific owns the track that runs by the Museum of Transport. And sadly, sometimes freight railroads likes to play games with Amtrak. Just like Bruce Ismay, the freight railroads would play games and probably lie about it.

Just watched this one. I had a not so bad time this summer on Amtrak. The train from Chicago to DC was bad. The roughest train ride ever. The showers were inoperable and the sink in my room dribbled water the whole night. The food is not as good as used to be. They used to have an actual dining car with restaurant quality meals. Back in 2012 and the again in 2016. I had black Angus steak with baked potato. From what I was told the ones on runs out west from Chicago and St Louis still have those along with the observation car. I will only travel those routes from now on and if they get rid of them on those will travel Amtrak no more.
