The yard fowls we ate were the ones that we ourselves raised in our own yards, they were kept foŕ much longer than the chickens you get in the supermarket and so the meat was tougher. Those you see on the streets beling to no one, they are just wild and not fed by anyone.
@geodra2469
@geodra2469 4 ай бұрын
Great to see that we share a common thread. This is the way we used to eat chicken back in the day here in Bim. The birds were not wild as they are today but were kept in our yards. Hence the name. then came the farms and the processors. Bajans got lazy and eventually lost the skill of preparing fowl to eat. They could get a chicken from the supermarket. I still remember the taste and aroma of a good old time chicken meal. Not the fast food junk of today. Cocks or hens were equally tasty, by the way.

Yard fowl aka #commonfowl is what most people used to cook in the rural parts here in Jamaica at Christmas time. Some people had turkeys as well. These days we are accustomed to broiler chickens.I haven't eaten common fowl in years.

Caribbean yard fowl is very lean and hard, so you have to pressure cook the yard fowl in order to soften it for eating.

Lol. We don't hunt. 😂😂 The closest we'll get to hunting is spear-gun fishing. These are just regular old yard fowl that have been a thing in Barbados for as long as memory serves. Everyone's grandparents' home had yard fowl.

African Tigress we usually kill the chicken the day before and wrap it in papaw leaves and then prepare it the next day and it cook soft because of the papaw, it was the leaves have some kind of tenderizer in them, enjoy your yard fowl they does be real sweet.❤❤❤

Mostly because the older folk who were keeping them might have passed on and younger generations did not carry on. The birds became wild. I still think that they can be a good source of meat but all the zoning rules prevent householders from keeping animals in some districts.
