As you can probably guess, the biggest inspirations for this video were the star wars rebels videos made by Marcus from The Cosmonaut Variety Hour, and watching them is even how i first realized the main issues with the series when it was still airing. I was a huge Clone Wars fan so when it was canned and replaced with Rebels, I had high hopes. I want into Rebels with an open if not optimistic mind. But when I saw that first episode I realized this was that that good of a show. And the worse part was knowing Disney cancelled Clone Wars for this subpar replacement. The hardest part for me is that Rebels doesn't seem to know who it's audience it. The tone is ridiculously childish for Star Wars and you can tell. They are so afraid of onscreen deaths that they even make a point of showing Stromtroopers move a little bit after they've been shot. Disney is making it abundantly clear these people have not been killed. This is a show with "War" in the title. Why are you not killing people? Yet at the same time they have this childish tone, there are elements in Rebels that are a continuation of Clone Wars. This series was designed to, to an extend, for Clone Wars fans. It tie up loose ends and you need prerequisite Clone Wars knowledge to fully appreciate it. But you can't go from the gritty, violent, and complex world of the Clone Wars into the censored, and simplistic tone and violence of Rebels. It's jarring and it doesn't feel organic. As a Clone Wars fan, I didn't like it. Like Maul was from a guy who would kill kids, execute people onscreen, stage coups of entire planets, and work with terrorists. Now he's hanging out with Ezra Bridger in a show that can't even use the word terrorist because it airs on Disney XD. Rebels was just a disappointment. It was stifled by the fact that it was made for children yet expects me to believe it exists in the same universe as Clone Wars which was aimed at teens. Dave Filoni even jokingly said in an interview when asked about what would have happened to some babies that were kidnaped by the Empire and he responded with "nothing I can show on Disney XD!" And it hurts because there was a similar plotline in Clone Wars and they literally show the Sith about to experiment on these kids. Rebels is not all bad. It has a few shining moments of greatness that match the Clone Wars but these moments are few and far between. If I have to slog through 95% of a show being bad to reach the 5% that are good, it's a show not worth watching.
@maxlivingham20013 жыл бұрын
IMO I prefer and would watch Rebels over Clone Wars any day of the week, but I can definitely see where people may not like the more childish display. I wish it was more like Clone Wars in the sense of the violence, etc. but with what Filoni had and the guidelines he had to follow, I think he did a great job, I think once the sequel comes out, it'll definitely be a lot more like CW since it's most likely live-action/not on Disney XD so it might be more your thing. I personally think he made up for it having less violent displays by having great characters but that's just my opinion

@@sofialu226 I never blamed Filoni, but Rebels is the product and I am judging quality of the product as anyone does in a review or critique. I think that Disney is responsible for creating an inferior show via executive mandates and dumbing down the intensity for kids but the end product is still Rebels. A product is not responsible for itself but it is still an inferior product by the nature of its existence and responsible for its own quality to be judged. I can say Rebels is not that great in the same way I can say Twilight is not that great (but Rebels is still better than any teen vampire romance novel). Disney, I think, should be held responsible for the lack of quality in the show's production but at the end of the day, the product is still the product and Rebels is a subpar product.

@@Obi-Wan_Kenobi are you really sure it's a lack of quality and not just your type of show/it's too different from CW? none of the stuff you've mentioned represents a lack of quality, just the show being made with audiences younger than the TCW audiences in mind. would the show have been better if it had contained as many mature themes as TCW? yeah, definitely. but the show worked very well with what it did and how it did it. you just have to go in there aware that the show doesn't contain as many as these mature themes and isn't going to be Clone Wars II. I prefer the much more serious tone and mature displays of Clone Wars, but at the same time, I prefer the characters and animation in Rebels. you just have to appreciate each show for what they bring to the table. I'm not at all saying you can't criticize the show based on these things, but you'll find yourself better off if you go in aware of what the show is and how it's different than what you're used too
@Obi-Wan_Kenobi3 жыл бұрын
@@garettments3177 My main criticism with the show (which I gave more examples of in my original comment) is that it cannot be taken seriously and this is a genuine criticism. Star *Wars* Rebels is a show about war. It's a show about rebellion. It's a show about oppression. These are serious topics but they are necessary topics kids needs to know about because they have real world inspiration and application. A good show can literally teach you about these subjects and you can make comparisons to real life. The problem is, Rebels does not handle these subjects with enough gravity or realism. If I am really to fear the Empire and understand the reason why these characters are rebelling the show needs to give me a good enough reason to fear them. But because the show is so dumbed down, the Empire isn't scary. There are moments in the show where characters will pull pranks on Imperials in the middle of a battles, raids, and infiltrations. That is not how people act when they are actually rebelling against a dictatorship. These people should be constantly alert for their lives, not making snide jokes and acting childishly. If you act childishly during a military battle, you're telling me the threat is not real because no one, not even kids, act childishly in the middle of death and war. That's my main criticism and I believe I articulated it pretty well in my OG comment. If the characters don't take the threat seriously, so why should I? And this is damaging because a show like Star Wars should teach you about real world war and this show does not. The Clone Wars was so well presented that I learned about the ethics of torture, colonialism, desertion, military insubordination, insurgency, and profiteering, and philosophies like pacifism, neutrality, feudalism, democracy and more. Clone Wars taught me so well that I could take fictional representations and apply them to the real world. But you can't learn anything about war from Rebels when they make the deliberate attempt to show you Stormtroopers getting shot _but still moving around on the ground_ because Disney XD is too afraid to kill characters on-screen. By dumbing war down, Rebels robs and discredits war of its impact. That's my problem and it's even worse when Rebels is a show that's directly tied to a series that already showed war in all it's brutality. It creates a narrative dissonance.

Usually I try to leave expectations at the door and I found myself really liking the show and the characters. As cool as a show with the original trilogy characters would be, I'm really glad that Rebels chose to focus on a cast of new characters instead. Clone Wars was cool but I feel like I had a hard time connecting to the characters since I already knew their history and fates. I think one of the reasons Ahsoka is so popular is because she is a new character. The movie characters are locked in, you can't really take their characters to places that don't match up with what's seen in the movies. The biggest missed potential of this show was the fact that it didn't have episodes taking place during the Original Trilogy. We could have seen how destroying the Death Star affected the galaxy; it could have galvanized planetary systems to resist the Empire, while at the same time, people in Imperial Space would be treating it as a tragedy as many of them would have husbands, fathers, and brothers onboard that station, and those who lost family there would be signing up to join the Empire. We could have seen how the Rebels losing the Battle of Hoth might have forced some planets that declared independence to once again pay tribute to the Emperor and submit to his will. We could even see how the Emperor's death on the Battle of Endor could have brought joy and cheer for the outlying systems, while in the core systems, the Imperial Moffs and Grand Admirals start playing Game of Thrones with each other, with each warlord dreaming that he will one day sit on Palpatine's throne. Rebels could have done all that, but instead, we just get a tidbit about how the Empire never came back to burn Lothal to the ground despite losing a Grand Admiral and a TIE Defender factory there. Those losses would have been catastrophic and would be seen as a massive insult to the Empire. You'd think Vader would visit the planet a second time in order to raze all settlements there as an example to those who threaten the Empire. I know the old Legends Vader would have. But apparently the new canon Vader isn't too keen on reminding people who rules the Empire.

That's just not what the show was ever meant to be about lol, it was just meant to show the growth of the rebellion into what it was in the OT, not show the rebellion in the OT. @@adudeontheinternet8246 Sorry for the long comment, I've had many experiences with people hating them. Maybe we just have totally different views on it which is okay. You can definitely simplify it heavily as "bad kid becomes good" but I really enjoyed seeing him go from selfish and self-serving to be willing to sacrifice himself for the good of his planet. He said that he didn't even want to help warn the rest of the crew in the first few episodes because he didn't want to risk his life for strangers, yet that's what he did in the finale (and many other times) without hesitation. I'd argue that this sacrifice is one of the most important things for the eventual success of the Rebellion that doesn't include a Skywalker since it takes Thrawn out of the picture and is a beacon of hope that the rebellion is able to beat the Empire. This is a bit debatable on if it's growth of Ezra, but I enjoyed how they had him grow from an individual with zero trust or faith in other people because half of his life at that point was spent alone unable to trust anyone but himself to one who is able to trust other people and has their backs/and they have his. He didn't trust the Ghost Crew to come back for him in one of the first few episodes when he was captured by Kallus, stating that people didn't do that and Kallus was stupid for thinking they'd ever come back for him, and he went to trusting his entire fate on Sabine and Ahsoka. Don't want to have too long of a post but I'd also add his development with dealing with the fate of his parents and the fate of Kanan in there. I think the fact that you can also see Kanan and Ezra growing together also really improves it for me and the growing bond between the crew, especially Ezra and Sabine. Also how Ezra went from such an independent person to being able to lead the liberation of Lothal with great success You can easily say that he did grow in maturity and skills/abilities, but that's pretty much a given since he goes from 14 to 19 and is training with either Kanan, Ahsoka, Rex, or Hera. I think they did an excellent job with his ability progression though. WAY better than Rey. His dark side arc could have definitely lasted longer but in a way, it makes sense that it didn't since he had family surrounding him, and they kinda cut off the six months or so where he was struggling heavily with the dark side (between Malachor and S3EP1). We have practically only seen the beginning of it and the ending of it and nothing in between. But he definitely did have some more internal struggle throughout with controlling himself and ensuring he did the right thing. Was probably just a result of not enough time or Filoni thought it was not necessary. I feel like the worst thing for Ezra was that he didn't have much time for him to be fully fleshed out because there were 5 other characters who needed to be explained as well, but I have very high hopes we'll see him a lot more in the Ahsoka show

Just think of the geonosis arc in season 3. He was the one who showed the most compassion to the last geonosian, and as the show went on he really desperately wanted to free the planet he called home and it’s people. Just cause he was in charge doesn’t mean he has a hero complex. He’d gotten chances to lead before and failed at times but became a better leader after them cause he learned from failure. I don’t get the comparison to the OT characters either. It’s a big galaxy, there’s plenty of ace pilots and gunfighters and big hairy aliens to go around. The Rebels characters have so much depth and personality, and are unique in my opinion. @Obi-Wan_Kenobi3 жыл бұрын
To be fair, Lavapasta didn't make say anything about the broader sequel trilogy, just the Force Awakens. But yeah, a major flaw of that movie was forcing it's characters into identical roles our original OT heroes without actually understanding what made those orignal characters so special in the first place. It's a problem that plagues not just the Force Awakens, but the entire sequel trilogy that's ultimately a derivative rehash. Like why can no one do what the prequels did? They were similar to the OT in some ways but totally original in other ways. It expanded the universe instead of stifling it.

I not agree, sorry I dont understand that mentality of IT HAVE TO BE BETTER THAN CLONE WARS, Rebels was a great show despite wasn't as good as Clone Wars, it was lighthearted, fun and serious and dramatic WHEN IT NEED IT, Dave Filoni still deliver one of the best SW shows with Rebels, yes is NOT as serious or Dark as Clone Wars, yes the animation was less expensive, yes was more kiddie at times, but its a CARTOON SHOW, one of the BEST of the last decade and still this show have the balls to kill of of their main characters (something actually CLONE WARS FAIL to do....Ahsoka, Rex and many more should have die there but they didnt, Kanan did), so this ohhh Rebels is bad because is not as GOOD as CLONE WARS is the stupidest thing any fan can say, is as stupid as say Legend of Korra is bad because wasn't AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER, the show is still leap ahead 90% of the modern era and classic era cartoons, how not be as good as its predecessor make it less great? So is sad you make a WHOLE VIDEO taking back a good opinion, if you want to say is not as GREAT as CLONE WARS is fine, but kinda making this make it look like this show was a pile of garbage and I would NEVER agree on anyone who thinks THAT WAY.
@Lavapasta3 жыл бұрын
I'm not saying it needed to be better than the clone wars, I'm saying that I used to think it was 'better than the clone wars' and I was wrong for thinking that way- it's not garbage, it's just not as good and is not a true successor to what Filoni and co. worked on previously. Maybe you don't think it's fair to compare it to the clone wars at all, but when both shows share the same crew members and characters... it's very difficult to not measure them against each other.
@Obi-Wan_Kenobi3 жыл бұрын
No one said it has to be better than Clone Wars, but it hurts to know that Clone Wars was cancelled and replaced with a greatly inferior show. If Rebels was a bit less in quality than the Clones Wars it would have been fine, but they fall so far below the bar that, for the most part, Rebels isn't worth watching. And yeah, I fully agree that characters like Rex and Ahasoka SHOULD have died but it has nothing to do with having the show runners not being brave enough to kill them off. Considering that Clone Wars showed suicide terrorism, execution, and mild cussing on screen, it's obvious that they had the guts to do kill off main characters if they wanted to AND THEY DID! Characters like Fives, Satine, and Savage were arguably main characters who had entire episode arcs devoted to them and they were killed off. Were they as important as Rex and Ahsoka, no. But it's disingenuous to say that Clone Wars did not have the guts to kill off main characters because they did. And the ironic thing is, if Clone Wars was never canceled and replaced with Rebels, it's very likely that many of the main characters you mentioned would have been killed off. Major characters tend to be killed off near the end of a show so they can be of as much service to the story until then. That's why they killed Kanan in the last 6 episodes and not the 70 episodes prior. Clone Wars was planning to kill of major characters in the last few episodes but they never got around to it because the show the canned. Case in point, Ventress (another main character) was set to be killed in the show but when it was cancelled they were forced to kill her in a book. And there was a huge debate about Ahsoka's fate behind the scenes. They discuss in interviews how Lucas was "Team Ahsoka Dies" and Filoni was "Team Ahsoka lives". Her fate was never set in stone and it's very likely she would have died if the series was never cancelled and Lucas got his way. Because when it was cancelled, Filoni had to pick up the pieces and he did this by introducing Clone Wars characters into Rebels. It was not the plan to have so many characters survive this long but Filoni tried to finish their stories because it was unlikely he would ever be allowed to finish them in Clone Wars. The fact that Disney ended up making a season 7 of Clone Wars was a miracle and when making that, Filoni again had to adapt the story to now fit the Rebels future. Sorry for the super long comment, but it's just untrue that Clone Wars didn't kill off main characters. Many were killed and more would have been killed if it were not for Rebels prematurely ending Clone Wars before they had the chance to kill of more characters. And ironically, the existence of Rebels forced certain characters to survive when they otherwise would not have because Dave needed to finish their stories.

This is a kiddy show, unlike The Clone Wars it makes the Empire/Inquisitors/Officers/Death Troopers an incompetent group villain that can be defeated by a merry band of Mary Sue-like brats with coloured hair malfunctions and liberal-minded wardrobe "fails" completely out of place in the Star Wars setting. It is fine to have some comic relief and to have over-the-top heroics from the protagonists in "moderation" but this show does not do that. ¡¡Spoiler alert!! The mandalorian "girl" could best everyone no matter how battle hardend they were, the Twilek was the best pilot in the universe, Chopper was a super droid that defeated swathes of troopers and destroyed whole motherships such as the ISD with a simple loopback charge, rocket propelled mandalorians destroy an Interdictor cruiser with a few missiles and grenades (try doing that in Empire at War PC game), an imperial "agent" with sideburns defects to the rebels and to top it off the show ends Thrawns supposed control with a herd of giant space tadpoles!!! I spent most of the show skipping through the boring episodes and barring an underdeveloped Grand Admiral Thrawn, Darth Maul, Moff Tarkin and a momentary Darth Vader there was absolutely no excitement, monotonous predicatability and quite franky by the end I was hoping unrealistically that all the brats died by the superior mind of Thrawn.

Ok, I get where you are coming from, but one point is Ezra definitely grew over those 4 seasons and became more mature. Another point is that I liked going with a new group, it’s good to go with the flow of new characters and show their growth, instead of going for the same concept they did before.
@bosuper94033 жыл бұрын
Yet we did have growth for Ahsoka and Rex. And funny how Rebels needed to constantly bring back clone wars and original trilogy characters back constantly to keep people interested. Just goes to show that the new characters they created sucked so hard.

@@bosuper9403 The new characters were easily the most interesting thing about the show, especially the way the OT/CW characters were able to complement them. It's kinda funny how they brought them back 'constantly', but they were barely even in the show apart from Rex who was a side character.

@garettments31773 жыл бұрын
I agree with some of the points that you're saying but I find myself disagreeing with a lot of what you said. I watched Rebels first before watching Clone Wars, and thought that Rebels was amazing beforehand and still thought it was better in a lot of aspects after watching TCW. I much enjoyed how Rebels was a lot more consistent with quality and I really enjoyed the entire Spectre crew, I think the only TCW characters that come close for me with growth is Rex and Ahsoka. I don't really see the comparison between the OT crew and the Ghost crew either, I always thought they were very different and not really the same thing at all. I think that they were pretty much bound to go towards the larger rebellion since the start as well - you have one of the best pilots in the galaxy at the time and 2 Jedis, both of which would be very useful for the rebellion. And they could've definitely done more with Ezra's character but I do feel like it was limited by the fact that they also had to expand on 5 other brand new characters. Like a lot of the episodes in S3/S4 were with Sabine, if you made those episodes Ezra-based episodes we'd have a much better understanding of his character, but then Sabine would be lacking. I think a show like this just needed more time and more seasons, which I hope we get with the live-action shows. I think that Rebels was better than Fallen Order - but Rebels had a lot more time to cook so I'll need to see the FO sequel and where they take Cal's character. Cal definitely didn't have as much development as Kanan or Ezra yet though so far Overall, I think they're both fantastic shows, and they both shine and lack in different areas, but in the end they're both incredible and some of the best SW media out there. As long as you're not going into Rebels with a 'wow, this replaced clone wars!!!!!" mindset, you'll probably love it

I Still love Rebels more than I like TCW. The feeling of it... I can't really explain it, but Rebels feels more.. "Alive" to me and I like Rebels Characters better than some CW characters. You can say Rebels has a lower quality, but It Is Worth Watching not as some people say (not you). And Ezra does has a character Development, by the end he is the Same but Different. Just in S1 one in the Trial when he is talking to Glitter Joda he says he sees how, what the crew do, makes people feel. Because he feels the same way around Them. He Keep Fighting, for Him and for the Others. He goes for totally selfish to Balanced between Selfishnes and Selfless to totally Selfless when he sacrifice himself. Even though he didn't die, but he made a sacrifice anyways. Sacrifice is not only about dying. And I still belive people is too harsh in Rebels. Rebels literally only had 4 Seasons to Introduce this New Characters, Develop them and the Main Plot. While TCW has 6 sesons before being cancell, to only show already well known Characters in war. Yes, in CW there were New cgaracter too, but practically none were Main. In Rebels all the Mains were new. I was never onboard on Comparing Rebels and CW because the characters from CW were secondary in here. But well, that's my opinion. And You said you still like Rebels and at least you can be respectfull. Not like those who only through shit to Rebels for the sake of it... BUT Curious thing. Latly I've seen more people finally giving a chance to Rebels and saying they actully liked it, some more than the CW others Less, others the Same and I'm happy for that :3 Honedtly. My Love fir Rebels can be related to me Having Ezra's same age when Rebels Started and Ezra's same age when it ended. You can say, we Grew together? XD But is not a "Nostalgic Bias" because it haven't been that long anyways, plus I've Rwatxhed Rebelsmany times. The "feeling" I mentioned at the beggining I feelt it since Episode 1 Towards the end.
@garettments31773 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said. I think it was a lot easier for TCW since a lot of the characters were already done with the prequels and the OT in mind and they were able to easily build off of that whereas Rebels introduced 6 new characters and only had 4 seasons to build them up. I think they did a fantastic job but they definitely could have done more if given more time. Clone Wars really only had to build up Ahsoka/Rex. I know they built up other people but they weren't as important as those two. I feel as if a lot of people just hate Rebels because they go in there with the mindset it's meant to be a replacement or a direct sequel to Clone Wars, and it's not. For me, it's always just been yet another show in the SW universe that expands on the lore. I'm so happy that more people are giving this show a chance and loving it. I feel like the Cosmonaut review is garbage and turned a lot of people off from a great show. This review is a LOT better than the CMV one but I still disagree with a good amount of the points made, but at least they make sense, don't contradict themselves every 5 seconds, are based on opinions and aren't incorrect. It baffles me on how people don't think Ezra developed throughout the series as well. They definitely should have done more with Dark Side Ezra and some other smaller points but overall his character arc was very good and will hopefully lead into a fantastic sequel show where we learn even more and see him and Sabine again.
