The Bolt EV is a lot more complexed than one would think. You naturally think of a motor and a final drive. But when you stop and think you realize it needs a inverter, control module, a charger system, and a heater for the cabin. You did an excellent job explaining the need for all five boxes and why and how each one works. I've been a mechanic most of my life. (I'm now retired and almost 70 years old) I know all the moving parts in an internal combustion engine, and a manual or an auto transmission. I still like the thought of an EV because there is only one moving part in the motor. (the armature) and the final drive is a lot less complexed than any transmission, manual, auto, or CVT. I like this thought so much that my next car will be a Chevrolet Bolt EUV. I considered the Nissan Leaf, but it doesn't have enough range. I do not the looks of a Tesla Model 3 and I think it's dash is stupid looking. I know there are other EV's and more coming, but the Bolt EV does what I need and has an affordable price tag. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of the Chevrolet Bolt EV.

That's gearhead DNA ! Tesla's are innovative and have some great engineering behind them, but for me the price is out of the question. Also I worry about long-term maintenance with Tesla. A used bolt is my choice for my next EV. I've had a 2015 Fiat 500e and BMW i3 for 4 years. The Fiat has been trouble free, the BMW less so (suprise!)

It's incredible how the computers and the high power electronics perform the power flow to and from the drive motor, and the main battery thousands, if not millions of times per second to provide torque and also the regeneration back to the battery as minute and split second changes in the "accelerator" are made to take advantage of the near instant torque and regenerative breaking. Absolutely incredible ! And to get 250-300 miles of range is amazing !! Amazingly quiet and smooth ! And no nasty exhaust !

Dr. John - I figure that if you have analyzed every hybrid and EV out there, and chose the Bolt for yourself, it's a great car. And at the price, it's a great value. I may just wait for the tax credits to be renewed. I'm bothered by the control that Tesla has over buying parts, using only authorized body shops which take months for repairs, and some quality issues as this month's Consumer Reports mentions. I watch Rich Benoit (Rich Rebuilds) on You Tube and after establishing an independent garage for Tesla repairs, he is now soured on the brand. There is a video on You Tube on how to charge the Bolt on the Tesla Network for free.

I really appreciate this video series. I googled "what's inside a Bolt EV" and found a few reviews of the interior of the car, but THIS is what I was actually looking for. I now know everything I need to know as a prospective owner of one of these vehicles, and the information was clear, digestible, and presented very well here by Professor Kelly. It's so well-presented that I went from knowing absolutely nothing about the car, to being able to accurately determine things like whether or not the used Bolt EVs I see online have DC fast charging installed just from a glance at a pic of the engine compartment, just from the information I learned here. At around $22k-$24k with a guaranteed $4k used EV tax credit, and if I can find one with a recalled battery so I can get a new one for free with a brand new warranty, the Bolt EV is looking like the best used EV option currently on the market. New Bolts get dealer markups to well over $30k. I can skip those depreciation costs and get a full brand new battery with warranty in a car that I paid used prices for, and I actually know what I'm looking at because now I have an understanding of the tech. Totally changed my buying experience, thanks again.

Professor Weber, based largely on information from your videos, I searched for and bought a used 2017 Bolt EV with some minor body damage that had the propulsion battery recall work done. Since it has been repaired it has become my primary vehicle and I can safely say it is probably the overal best automobile I've owned, and the first domestically made vehicle I've purchased since the Chevy I had in high school. I convinced my wife ten years ago that we should have solar panels and battery storage on our home and at the time I someday hoped to have an electric vehicle to take advantage of the installatiion but had no idea when and how that would happen, The Bolt made it possible on our budget. I don't think I could ever go back to an ICE vehicle. I sure don't miss oil stains on the floor or the smell of exhaust in the garage. 🙂 As far as I am concerned you are performing a public service. Hi, I have been driving a 2019 Prius Prime for the last 3-1/2 years. If you do get a Bolt, or any other EV, you will likely learn some rather different driving techniques. One of the most important: to get the best performance out of the Regenerative braking system, you will learn to begin decelerating much sooner as you approach a stop sign or red light. You want to drive the car in a way that uses the friction brakes as little as possible, and to capture as much energy as you can from regen braking, that means having a very light foot on the brake pedal. Once you get used to it, you'll never want to drive a gas car again.

Seeing this video was enough to get me to test drive a 2017 Bolt today. I was very impressed with the power off the line and the ease of merging with 70mph traffic on I70 in Denver. The car seriously scoots, but it's also rides remarkably smoothly for a small car and it's very quiet at 80mph. There's a ton of headroom, even for a tall guy like me, and with the front seat set for me, I still had inches of legroom left when I tried out the back seat. The quality of the interior materials isn't exactly up to Mercedes standards, but this seven-year-old car felt very solid, with no loose trim or rattles. I think I may just have to snag me one.

Excellent information, much thanks! We purchased a 2023 in dec, love it so far. For people interested, dealer dropped $1,000 of mrsp, ofcourse get the $7,500 federal tax credit and a $1,000 for the home installation of a 240v level 2 charger at home, makes it one of the more affordable cars that can be purchased. Unexpectedly fun to drive with the available torque, if you have a pretty long daily commute this is a perfect little car to do that. Not getting the range that is projected, but only been driving in pretty cold weather so far. 3.5 to 4.0 kW per mile. With local kWH at ~$0.10, 35 to 40 miles per dollar is not bad at all. With local gas at ~$2.80 = 98 to 110 mpg. There are some nuances, there is some loss when charging the car, so there will be some loss there too depending how you charge, from what i understand ~5 to 10% Considering less moving parts and heat generated by the bolt vs ice car, i hope this car will run a long time, even if the battery degrades to 80% after 10y it still should be good enough from a battery perspective to commute a few times a week on a single charge.

Thank you for this there is very little out there showing how EVs actualy work practically. Electrical and mechanical basics should be a mandatory part of the curriculum in schools. That is the future.

As a GM car salesman part time and working for GM on the Chevy Bolt these vehicles can take a huge beating (not talking about the retail version). All of my customers are very happy with the Bolt.

Curious, if not retail then what other version is there? Also, what do you mean beating, is that just high mileage or do they actually stand up to abuse?

I was just looking at your channel earlier today seeing if you had released anything lately. I was 3 hours too early. My ‘17 Bolt continues to be flawless.

This is a very good video. I'm a mechanic/body man and I've never done anything to an EV. I've never even driven one. I've only had very limited interaction with a hybrid. Electric cars are the future, so everyone needs to learn about them. Especially body men. EV's crash too. And they need to be repaired safely and correctly. Thanks for the video. I learned a lot

We bought a 2020 largely due to available incentives here in BC, Canada and that we live in a rural community with a Chevy Dealer. This really interesting and will share with others. Many thanks.

I just bought a 22 EV a couple weeks ago - it's a nice upgrade from the 17. I didn't think I'd like the front end when I first saw the new models but it really grew on me.

For any EV the charging features (fast/super/normal : AC/DC) are important. So additionally tell us about it, please. Good Video, thanks.

I have been researching the purchase of a Chevy Bolt, and was interested in specifics on how the powertrain worked. This was the most educational, informative, and useful video I could have asked for! Thank you so much for your time and commitment to explain the workings in a simple and clear manner. I will be sure to check out your "deep dive" videos too on the specific Bolt components!

First, let me echo the other posters and say, “welcome back”. You are an inspiration! Again, I’m happy to see the use of prime numbers where possible in the driveline gears. Do you ever plan to take a look at the Tesla Drive train? Mind you, Sandy Munro has already shown a lot, but from a completely different viewpoint Call me cynical, but wouldn’t the “maintenance requirements” be a sop to the dealership network?
@WeberAuto4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I have several Tesla powertrain videos coming soon
@williamgoode91144 жыл бұрын
Yes I was surprised by the maintenance requirement comment on a bev, we don’t want that rubbish creeping into the new era of electric cars, kudos to Tesla and their team for no service no dealership, except by exception, driving by car parks of new cars was just daft, and like leaving them in the docks for a long time not great for the cars longevity either, have never liked dealership sales or service by marque
