I Was Wrong About the Preamp Gain Knob (am I still?)

Until recently, I believed the gain "knob" changes the voltage of the preamp output voltage (from battery or power supply), not the input voltage (from microphone). After looking at some circuit I realized I might be wrong. But it made no sense to me. I'm not sure it does even now. Anyway, I try to explain what I believe happens.
