Oh you definitly have to watch part 2 now. (Orphan: First Kill) it dives deeper into her backstory. Its basically a prequel.

A situation like this actually occurred, so I think this was semi based on a true story - a small person pretended to be a child in a Russian orphanage and then killed some people

As for wanting to know the background of the child, all that should have been done BEFORE adopting the child, not after the fact. Now as for John not figuring it out, you have to remember we've got the benefit of seeing what John didn't see. Everything he saw was what looked like his wife having problems with Esther, getting drunk after she had a problem with alcohol, and a child (Esther) who came from a family that died and obviously would need greater care and love. He didn't see the attacks she perpetrated and had a 50/50 chance of siding with the child or the injured parties. Ultimately he found out too late. But yeah, up til the end where Esther starts coming onto John, I thought she was a troubled child and probably psycho. It got really weird when she started trying to seduce John and then realizing she was an adult in a small body.

Never understood why everybody hates Esther. She's great, such an interesting and great villain. Laughed and smiled at things she did to ruin the boring 'happy' family. The little girl is way too adorbz and I liked her up until she stopped being friendly with Esther. Definitely didn't wish her well after that. The boy was super annoying, bleh. And so weirdly suspecting of Esther, like please, he just met her. And then couldn't finish the bird because So KiNd. Yeah, right. Definitely deserved what he got. *round of applause Too bad his kid sister didn't get the same. But who's the most annoying is the mom. Hope for vera farmiga she's not as annoying IRL as her daft female character and doesn't act like HER.

Unfortunately for me, this movie was spoiled for me before i watched it. Once i got an ounce as to what was going on, i was like "wait this is the movie where the girls is actually (i wont reveal any spoilers for those who havent seen this)" But either way, if i hadnt been spoiled i also would have been like "wtf is wrong with this child!!?????" The girl playing esther did an amazing job and its quite a huge commitment.
