Actually there's a reason why it is an all-male cast. Notice that the only female voice is the computer's. It amplifies the sense of isolation and discomfort for the spectator.

Kurt Russel has said in interviews that the all-male cast made for a unique energy on the set. He observed that men don't posture when there are no women to posture for, and that was reflected in how relaxed they portrayed their characters.

1. The Norwegian killed himself so The Thing couldn't get to him. 2. The ultimate hand grenade throwing FAIL 🙄🙄 It's necessary to take out the helicopter. 3. You have to realize that this movie came out long before CGI so there was some very creative practical effects showcased here. 4. Mac's not a murderer. Clark was attacking him with the scalpel. It was self defense. 5. Of everything that went down the part that got me the most was when Blair was dragging Gary by the face. 6. Their fate is left up to the audience. Maybe it's best they all die. 7. Russell wasn't all that happy with that hat. 8. Another Russell/Carpenter product you need to first time/share with us is "Escape from New York".

Great reaction! I'll tell you my interpretation of Blair. When he destroyed the helicopter and tried to destroy the communication equipment, I think it just means that he was a little smarter than the others and got the point very quickly - that the alien mustn't be allowed to reach civilization. If you listen to what he's yelling when he's wrecking the equipment, it supports this idea. He's the one who calculated that it could infect the entire world in 27,000 hours. I believe he was infected later when he was confined to the shack. An infected person (really an imitation of a person) could have just come out to him at the shack and said, "Hey, we voted to let you come back," and when he got close, infected him. This movie started its life as a 1938 story called "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell Jr. Campbell was an interesting guy. He was primarily the editor of a science fiction magazine, but would write a story himself once in a while. You could really write a whole book about him. In 1951, it was adapted into a pretty good movie called "The Thing From Another World." Carpenter was a big fan of the movie so did his own remake. By 1982, the special effects technology existed to do a lot more than in 1951. There is also a 2011 prequel which shows what happened at the Norwegian camp just before the events of this film. The dog deserved an Academy Award for his performance here. He was a half husky half wolf named Jed. He had been born in a Humane Society in Bellingham, Washington. I believe that this was his first movie, and he later appeared in 3 others.

I think that Blair got assimilated by the part of the dog thing that escaped through the roof of the dog pen. That would be consistent with the large side it achieved after assimilating Gary and Nauls at the very end.

All carpenter movies should be watched! Specially Assault on precinct 13, escape from New York, escape from LA, Starman, Big Trouble in little CHINA, they Live, The Fog, Eyes of Laura Mars, Prince of Darkness, and others. Carpenter resented Spielberg for ET AND it took all the money and awards. But Carpenter had the last laugh! Because this movie is much better! Carpenter made his own alien love story with Starman! Carpenter also is the master of the minimalist creepy theme music! Kurt did 4 movies with carpenter! He even did an early TV Elvis movie, for John! This is one of the 3 most important sci-fi movies ever made. Plus Alien and Bladerunner, which are all related, by actors, and some other technicalities. Also the brilliance here is, when the thing busts out, it comes out of u anywhere, any size, shape, etc. The dog trainer should have won an Oscar and the special effects guy should have won an Oscar! He was a twenty one year old college student!😮😮😮. Pro tip, carpenter is still thinking about a sequel! But there's still a massive tie in here with Alien, predator Bladerunner this , and a movie with Kurt Russell called, Soldier! They are related by the beings called Engineers, for Aliens, Terminator, predator, Bladerunner this, and a movie with Kurt Russell movie called, Soldier. Common companies, technology, Replicants, synthetic humans, beings that Engineers created, and even writers and producers! And this is why, prosthetic, robotics, special/ effects, practical effects, are way better than CGI! The three main corporations... Cyberdyne (Terminator) Weyland Corp (alien) and Tyrell Corp (Bladerunner) all did cross work for each other, and also shared some employees!😮 Kurt better have kept the hat! Also the total brilliance here is, once u have been infected, even from just a scratch, u have no idea when u are being taken over, u don't become the thing, until it's cornered found out or threatened! Then it's cells take over ur cells! One of the absolute must watch Carpenter films u must watch! Along with Starman, escape from New York, escape from LA, Big Trouble in little CHINA, assault on precinct 13. Go with those, and his Halloween stuff, Eyes of Laura Mars, They Live, The Fog, Christine, In the mouth of madness, prince of darkness, memoirs of an invisible man, vampires! There are critics who say this is Carpenter's version of Communism Socialism, etc , and how it takes over countries, much as a film in the 50s by the same name, i think...the special effects guy here went on to do some great movies! This movie has literally been discussed for 40 years, one of them has to be the thing...who is it? Lots of theories have been discussed. When it happened.... before or same time as Palmer, and something about a vision effect, in an infected person's eyes. But carpenter is adamant, that no one knows who the thing is, and there are no giveaways!!!

I just watched a recent interview done with Kurt Russell. This part cracked me up. When he first encountered the enormous sombrero in the wardrobe, he exclaimed, “I’m not f-ing wearing that hat! It’s insane!” However, the wardrobe team informed him that the hat had already been used in some establishing shots. Despite absolutely hating the hat at first, Russell now acknowledges that the sombrero was a “perfect” choice by Carpenter. Kurt joked, “Yeah, MacReady’s a drunk so he probably doesn't give a s--t and would wear a hat like that"🤣

@@Nicolas.Vincent my original reply seems to have been thrown down the memory hole by youtube. But I did say it seems more logical. The Thing seems more like a parasitic virus that takes over existing life forms rather than an intelligent life form that can build and fly advanced technology, which is what I think they showed at the end when all the different forms (replicants) were coming out of the Thing. Macready (Kurt Russell) had a blow up doll in a deleted scene. I've never been able to find it other than a couple of film stills of the scene on the internet. It's after they return from the Norwegian camp and he's watching the tapes they found while blowing up a mysterious object that is revealed to be a love doll. 😅 I think they made the right decision deleting it. It would've killed the overall vibe. Plus, who would take orders from a drunk guy with a funny hat and a blow up doll?🤣

So I save movies like that, or Jaws, or Alien, for special reactions, and I would not pass up your one-of-a-kind commentary on this one. You had me laughing so many times, I can't even single out one line or moment. I love The Thing, but there are plot holes galore and Kurt's stupid hat, and all these scientists listening to the helicopter pilot as if he was the Thing Whisperer, lol. So I loved that you were goofing on some of that stuff. But like you said.....it's just b-movie material! Who cares? It's a horror movie! I LOVE that you love The Blob so much (and the original no less!); if you ever want to do a rewatch video on that, I'll definitely be into your riffs on that one! PS: Hey, real quick.....1978's "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers", definitely an influence on this one (there's a quick homage to it) and a great movie in its own right. The original 1950s version is worthy as well, and the 90s Abel Ferrara one ("Body Snatchers") is also good. (the 4th version with Nicole Kidman sucks) But the '78 version is the best, that's a real good piece of cinema on top of everything else. Ok! Thanks, Camerin! That was a BLAST!!!!

Many people, including myself, have watched this perhaps 100 times since it came out since 1982. You should watch the prequal (also titled The Thing) which came out in 2011. Though it uses CGI as opposed to the historic, Rob Bottin practical effects of this movie, 🎬 it tells the story of the Norwegian camp 🏕 and fills in some of the blanks and answers some of the glaring questions of The Thing (1982).

There wouldn't even be The Blob without The Thing. Producer for The Blob (1958), Jack H. Harris, got his inspiration for the movie after seeing The Thing from Another World, believing he too could make a movie in which a group of people stand around talking about an alien.
