I believe once modders are able to use assets including the doors, materials, batteries doors, buttons etc…there will be immaculate map mods for story kind of experiences. Not to mention sandbox potential. Garry’s mod is not so far a distant memory.

Map modding and user built scenarios are 100% what Bonelabs needs right now. It's got the mechanics, it's given us freedom of avatars, so now we just need fun worlds and game modes to enjoy them in. After that as a more significant update, multiplayer would be amazing, and give the game the potential to actually maintain itself as an enduring big name in the VR scene.
@obviouslykaleb79982 жыл бұрын
@@UnknownSquid i think coding is more important than assets for Bonelab's future. Imagine a large enemy that can grab and throw you, really small enemies that swarm and climb you to attack your head, or enemies with guns that aren't just "Good Value Combine." Drivable tanks, guns meant for different avatars, new gamemodes. This game has potential, and "play as a different franchise's character in a different franchise's map" only scratches the surface.

And the fact that all of those mods will be available to Quest 2 users (there will probably be some the Quest 2 can’t handle, but they’ll still be available) means that everybody can get in on the fun. Here's my take on BoneLab and its previous itteration, BoneWorks: Back when I first played BoneWorks, there's a specific spot you get to very early on in the museum. Within it, it explains how the locomotion behind avatars operate, being a a gyrosphere and capsule being the body and the arms being only the hand targets. Colission on mostly everything else doesn't really exist. In fact, you could test this, and seeing this as a way to handle VR locomotion back then was very eye opening at the time. It may have been 'part of the lore' but it also was an inside scope to what was going on behind the scenes. To this day, capsule collision is what you commonly see a lot, with hand targets having collision, but not really the arms. Now we look at BoneLab. Like it's previous iteration, BoneLab does offer something new for the VR market that tackles another problem: embodiment. While I've seen people make tutorials on uploading their VRChat avatar and keeping the body clipping issues (and resulting in cringe because they missed the entire point of the new engine ), the biggest takeaway was solving an issue that's existed since... well, forever. When you jump into an avatar, the proportions of the avatar might not match your own. This is a big deal for full body tracking, where an unpropotioned avatar will have a hard time syncing up with your own movements, even if you have 8 body trackers speaking from experience. Bonelabs proposed another change to the VR paradigm, where having placements on our own body should match that of the avatar's. Our hips should align with theirs, and shoulders and so on. Just as much as you change your avatar in BoneLab and everything still works, the same cannot be said for VRChat, Neos, or any other social VR platform, where having many avatars is a likely possibility. Each one, being a different size or dimension, has something that requires you to remember a quirk, which is resolved entirely in BoneLabs. Just as BoneWorks introduced a solution to VR locomotion and physical interactions, BoneLab introduces a solution to VR embodiment. Boneworks's gameplay was wrapped around the new physical contact of VR and interactions with the world, and BoneLab's gameplay is wrapped around feeling an actual part of world and the avatar you are using. Just as Carmack introduced us to Binary Partitioning which revolutionized gaming to this day, BoneLabs introduced to us Warped World Space.

bit of an issue: while it's impressive that they managed to get the arm movement done well, this system causes a lot of problems that Boneworks never had. You can literally trip in this game for no good reason, and i have more times than i can count. arms routinely get stuck behind other arms or your own body because the game can't figure out your movements or the dimensions of a character dont allow for those moves, and it's even more jarring than Boneworks ever was for climbing or fighting, for example. I dont think, as it is in its' current iteration, that it is particularly groundbreaking. It has potential certainly; i think allowing avatars to pass through themselves would likely solve all of the above problems, especially given the incredibly niche circumstances of these issues, but they are more than enough to bring in that immersion ruining cognitive dissonance of "what is going on why can't i play the game" that this was intended to avoid. also, guns, while obviously intended for a certain playermodel size, are often useless with characters that are even slightly smaller; the "light" character can't aim rifles at all, and it emphasizes the fact that these guns were made for Boneworks' Ford model, not Bonelabs. You can technically use them, but aiming is the worst kind of finnicky; unreliable, obviously unintended, and janky. Given some time, both development time for different models and quality testing time for bugs, most of my issues wouldn't exist. that's a theme i find with most of the game; "it would be really good if it were more polished, but it's decent now." I wouldn't say it's worth 40 bucks personally, but maybe later.

The game encourages experimentation and exploration, it wasnts you to be creative and find your own ways to get through the campaign to prepare you for the Sandbox and modding. BoneLab is full-blown hard-core VR. Exploring and experimenting with the environment are core elements of the game and crucial for progression. Comfort options were dropped in favor of immersion. Teleport would make climbing and jumping obsolete, and the vignette is used as damage indicator. The hype for the game I think was kind of an accident. Not created by Stress Level Zero but by the fans of Boneworks. When a ton of enthusiasts get excited over the successor of one of the best VR-games ever made, it draws attention. Many people who did not play Boneworks probably had no clue what they stumbled into when starting BoneLab. About the opening situation: It is a tough surprise, sure. But if the developers would consider every possible mental issue a player might have, half the game would be problematic. There could be no heights, no narrow spaces, and no violence at all. Everything could trigger someone, especially in VR.

One of the best videos made on the game. Aside from maybe a content warning the game really needs people to understand that it's really a hard core VR game. It's a treat for the people who live and breath VR. It's laughable to see so many VR content creators demand a watered down version whilst talking high and mighty about how VR isn't getting enough enthusiast content. Not only that but many even bash on the only one to arrive in years. Shameful really. I consider you right up there with Thrill as one of the best channels for an enthusiast of VR to follow.

This is definitely not a beginner title and not even for people who did finish a few games like HL Alyx.. those games are still like a tutorial to VR and it feels like you need to finish Boneworks as a tutorial for Bonalab, which just drops you into a room full of enemies like literally 10 min into the game with no tutorials and anything, before you even reach the main menu hub.

It's a warning that our virtual worlds could become as divided and messy as the real world we live in. That's good sci-fi. I don't know how this game got so hyped. Especially because there were no talking points or features that were hyped up. It was just hype for hype's sake. I enjoyed the game a lot. It was too short and the mini games don't really make up for how quickly the narrative goes by. I'll give the devs one thing. They sure left me wanting more and that's a good thing.

My four biggest complaints about bone lab as someone who loves it. 1) we can no longer store knives, bricks and small weapons aside from pistols in the underarm holsters. Who stores a knife or a brick on their shoulder? 2) bladed weapons no longer stab into wood-textured geometry. 3) we have nullbodies that are fully functional, can in scripted areas use stairs and inclines, yet we still do not see them carry out any actual functions. 4) we have a story where the Fantasy Land NPCs have become sentient and overtime the nullbodies ascend to NPCs under the watchful eye of a cultist AI keeping them compliant...which were given tools that were altered to be more like weapons...with a plot line where after they killed you either for being a human monitoring them or a nullbody turned npc turned player with too much free thought...they explored the new shafts and began collecting weapons and tech to take revenge for being abandoned... Only to not use those weapons when the heretic returns.

This was a fantastic outlook on the position of Bonelab's impact on the VR scene. The fact that there isn't just "Bonelab story playthrough" videos and having it end there speaks volumes. There are all sorts of tutorials, reviews, sandbox, speedruns, modding, etc. And that just spikes up so much conversation and interest even with the idea of the drama that comes along with it. The fact that the game is such a love and hate with the community really just shows how important this game is to the VR scene. It's pushing boundaries that many other VR titles are scared of doing, and me as a VR enthusiast looking for mechanically intense games, Bonelab does just that. Really great video! The open ended nature of a game like Elden Ring isn't comparable the annoyance of having to figure out that you need to try every minigame once even if you have no interest in them and then having to do a claw puzzle six times just to continue the story only to find it's a half-baked pain in the arse. I didn't play a single level where something didn't break down or bug out or was designed to be annoying like the tower climb level or the literally pointless moon level. It was only after you got past all that and got to the story proper where it felt like an actual game. You could ignore the new avatar changing mechanic since obviously you'll only ever want one normal model that works in all scenarios, who honestly used the heavy when they had a choice not to? But then it was over the moment you start to have fun. Coming from Boneworks, Bonelabs felt like a major downgrade and the only thing new was a streamlined mod tool. This would have been better as an addition or DLC to Boneworks if anything.

It's odd... I personally have just as much hype for the game as I did before it came out. For me, I love physics sandbox games, ever since I was kid, and seeing these types of games where you yourself can physically structure and interact with these physics engines is extremely fascinating to me. I fell in love with Boneworks, and did it again with BoneLab. I definitely understand alot of the dislike, especially in regards to motion sickness and to an extent the campaign (for me, like just 1 or 2 more conclusive levels could've really helped it feel less like a sudden conclusion) for me all the quirks and bugs are just new things to consider when playing the game, similar to Thrillseeker, you have to respect that this game has its own physics, and in a sense, physical laws that you must learn and compare to fully start experiment with the Marrow engine. While I understand the dislike of alot of aspect, to me it'll easily get my vote of Best Vr Game of the Year, hands down, but of course being a specific genre, it's definitely a "you love it, or HATE it" kinda game lol

I enjoyed Bonelab but it has a huge glut of issues that bother me. 1) physics are super wonky - climbing over ledges is something we're all familiar with in this I'm sure. Things still get stuck in things. your arms seem to only ever be used at full power so you can hold your whole body up with a single hand leading to weird things like accidentally levitating yourself while using the crane game's joystick or dragging a whole desk along the floor when you were just trying to open the door or drawers on it, etc. 2) No multiplayer - really surprised at this one. A lot of people would've overlooked many sins if this was included. 3) No code mods - we currently only have avatar and map mods enabled. Who knows how long we'll have to wait until they allow code mods... heck I don't even know what the system for the code mods will even involve :o 4) Some of the level design is dire - Moonbase. Pillars. That section in Bridge04 where you have to weigh down a switch but can't see what it's operating. Multiple other such parts where player messaging is either bad or non-existent. Some level mechanics don't even work consistently: The ball wasn't hitting the switch in one of the early levels so I had to crawl through the grate it was supposed to open (thank heck I was using a small custom avatar :P ) 5) The avatar system is woefully underutilised and could've been even crazier. The 'short' avatar is the same size as a normal person crouching so you never really need to use it. Should've been genuinely tiny so we could get up to some toy-story level escapades, though the holster system seems to really hate super big or super small models to a degree. The 'strong' avatar is basically replaced for brute strength by the 'heavy' one meaning there's no reason to use it outside of aesthetics. There's straight up no reason at all to use the 'light' avatar outside of aesthetics. They also didn't really implement any crazier avatar abilities like being able to fly or have unique gravity or detaching body parts then being able to operate them as if they were still attached or anything zany like that :o 6) The enemies that can shoot are the only ones that offer some feeling of challenge unless you're doing some kind of weapon restricted run or they're thrown in large enough numbers from multiple sides like in the arena. I don't regret buying it and I'm on my 2nd playthrough now (1st was on quest, 'clean' and 2nd is on PC using rebecca from cyberpunk edgerunners as my avatar who's tiny proportions makes it feel a lot harder :P ) but the above are definitely things I would've liked to have seen done better (or at all in the case of multiplayer XD )

I think that Boneworks and Bonelab harken back to a bygone gaming era, where the developers of games actually respected the intelligence and creativity of the player. When it wasn't about, "open world," games where you just walk towards a waypoint, and then get a new one to walk towards. Some people were stumped by Bonelab because they've been trained to expect the game to hold their hand, and walk them towards their objective. Here's an example of the right way to guide a player: Mega Man X. In the first level, you get dropped into a pit. Likely being familiar with Mega Man, you think, "Wait, how can I get out of here? I can't jump high enough, and I don't see any other way out." So you start to experiment, until you jump against a wall, and X sticks to it, and you can climb out of the pit. This is essentially teaching by placing the player in an unfamiliar situation, and giving them only one way out of it, but THEY have to find it. This provides a eureka moment, which feels good, and makes you remember the lesson better than a tutorial that just tells you, "press A to jump." THAT'S how Boneworks and Bonelab teach things. They guide you towards the answer, but ultimately leave it up to you to find it, using your creativity. So if you go into it with that mindset, of, "Okay, it's up to me to figure this out," it's very easy to figure out how to get to the campaign in Bonelab. Anyway, that's just my two cents, what do other people think about people being stumped by the game?

See I have struggled with *begging of bonelab* issues in the past. That being said I really don't find the beginning as offensive as many others do. Now I get that some have it much worse off than I do, but based on my experiences I don't find it offensive. It's a part of the story. (I'm all good now btw)

I love the game i just wish that they did not rely on mods because the story was mainly preping for the mods showing off the avatar resizing new guns melees and cars just showing off the endless ways of modding and i know it is not a story game (they made it specificly for sandbox and mods) but i kinda wish it was like boneworks a bit only storywise longer, more enimes, more puzzles, etc. Just hopefully next time they pay more attention to the story and not mods with that out the way 5 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Regarding your comment at around 6:40. Regarding Bonelabs being vague and Elden Ring being similar. Elden ring starts you off by explaining the premise and its mechanics i.e Touch graces to get checkpoints and reset (Which i think labs does well in the entire first section) but it also has an NPC TELL you (That your gonna fail) but at least he tells you what you need to do. Gotta collect 'Great runes'? Idk what those are but consider i just killed a boss and got rewarded for it, at least i know. Bonelabs? You finish level 1. Enter the lab and you have literally zero direction, suddenly there are 7 things you can do. 1-6 is the clearly labeled side areas and 7 is power on and play with a crane. What's not clear, and what SHOULD be clear (Maybe on the crane) is that you need to enter EVERY side room at least once to progress. They should have removed the enter/exit requirement from the area and just had the orbs hidden around the room Hell even just a radio with the jimmy being like 'yo welcome to the lab, oh weird the door to the next area is locked. maybe the crane above the mirror can fix that'

@@xalener u can slide it by just holding it with your index & thumb 👌🏻 I also noticed that u can grab stuff so long as u have 4 fingers on the controller & it doesn’t matter which fingers too & it seems to grip object so idk 🤷🏼♂️ they do feel different than boneworks tho. Let’s hope they patch this soon so it can revert back to BoneWorks controller layout.

Honestly, I can see why people don't like the game. but personally I REALLY ENJOY IT. like, god the entire game is perfect for me. I might sound crazy but I played BONEWORKS with 147 exact mods. yup, a lot of mods. and the game got boring after half a year of playing it. but now with bonelab? a vanilla version of a game is more fun that boneworks with 147 mods. seriously, im having such a blast playing trough bonelab and the sandbox is just spectacular. 40$ Well spent in my opinion. Oh and also I recommend doing this: go to arena > fantasy land and choose the custom wave thing. put only the normal skeletons and put the amount to max, then only play as the heavy guy and punch skeletons for as long as you want. it's really enjoyable in my opinion lol. did that for like 2 hours straight

I was pondering getting Bonelab so I fired up Boneworks after not playing for a while to remember what the physics are like or to see if updates had made any improvements. Essentially after playing for a hour I was reminded that while the physics are neat and whatnot I clearly remember and understand the aggrevating "jank" that everyone is talking about. It doesn't feel natural TBH. I dont think I'll be purchasing Bonelab but if I ever do it will be because new avatar mechanics look awesome.
@feelsboyyyy2 жыл бұрын
What's to note is that Bonelab did anything and everything they could to reduce that jank. I started to dislike playing Boneworks after about a year since it's release because the phsyics just got too frustrating for me. On the other hand bonelab handles just so, so much better. Of course it's not perfect but if you're on Steam then I'd say it's worth giving it a shot. You can always refund it if you don't go above 2 hours playtime.

Bonelab was only hallways. Boneworks was twice as long and has expansive sandbox levels
@rav3n5952 жыл бұрын
I think the hate on Bonelab is just a symptom of frustration in the VR community. People wait for 'years' for content, but what they are typically offered doesn't fulfill their needs. It is like every time they go to the store, there is nothing there that they like. That is frustrating, especially since these people have been asking for and are willing to pay for content that suits their needs. Yet, they don't get it. So when they see a sandbox game like Bonelab come out, it triggers their frustration. I fully understand their perspective. I am a Cyan type of person, which is self explanatory. If a person doesn't like a game, they can just ignore it. But when that type of game is all that is available... well, there you have it.

i neither hate nor love Bonelab, I think I generally like it, but dislike some of the decisions and issues there are with the game. Mainly my issues coming from my favourite game of all time, boneworks, as following: A) the index controllers are broken, binding are wonky, the slow-mo button seems bugged and the controller tracking isn't correctly aligned B) playing vr I love being able to use my body to control my character. In boneworks I was able to physically crouch and dart around hiding behind cover and barricades while popping up to shoot some rounds into the Omni-projectors. This does not seem to be the case with Bonelab, because of the shiny new feature that was advertised to get rid of the need for a standing or seated toggle, being able to physically crouch whole moving is not longer possible as the game will think you are seated and shoot you eyes up to the full height of the avatar, forcing you to use the stick... I hate this feature and would like an OPTION to choose to be able to go back to just standing mode, like we had in Boneworks. (asking for this OPTION is for some reason VERY controversial I have found...) C) I would like to see some more graphical options on pcvr, I have yet to find a way to turn down the fog, having tried every option from performance to ultra... Please let is turn down the fog. Once these issues are resolved, if they are, then I will provably consider the game to be on par if not better than boneworks (at least in the sandbox department) but right now, it is a pretty mod experience. I guess I feel like my platform was neglected, which hurts as we, the PCVR community are the ones who made SLZ who they are today, it feels kind of like a betrayal. That being said, the avatar swapping is fun, and the expansion on the lore is cool. My stance on the game right now. 2.5/5

I think people love bonelab because it brings allot of things people want, which is full immersion. People want to feel that their IN the world, bonelab like boneworks and sword and sorcery, couple this with its very portal like gameplay feel (more open thought) helps.. Downside is obvious VR legs issue! When people play stock Skyrim VR, its very MEH! but when you slap in all the VR Mods... its amazing, so I'm told. _(waiting for PICO-4 to arrive, been out of VR loop)_

6:30 "it's interesting that when games like elden ring or dark souls are obscure about their campaigns, they're called a masterpiece, but but when a vr game does it it's D-Day to some people." (slightly paraphrased because imperfect memory) respectfully, this is an L opinion, and i will explain exactly why: 1: despite your implications, VR and non-VR have nothing to do with this topic, because: 2: Elden ring, the most acclaimed of From's games and an example you used, holds your hand quite a bit. from having literal rays of gold point you to where you're supposed to go, to having the first person you meet say "well, off with you, to castle stormveil on the hill," to an ever-present companion who explains quite a bit of the lore; the game, while there's no UI element to it saying "Main Campaign, Mission One," there is far more than enough to guide even a 9 year old along the right path. Compare this to Bonelabs, which considering the contention was "people _don't know how to continue the campaign,"_ doesn't tell you to do anything. the most you get is rays of light coming out of each door after you've played a gamemode. It's up to the player to: (1; figure out that they're appearing from doors that you've gone through, then spend at least 30 minutes if you're speedrunning going through each door and out (2; find by curiousity or happenstance the crane (3; if the crane works (it didnt literally three out of the four times i tried to use it in my game), you have to figure out how to work the finnicky magnets (4; bring all of the correct orbs to their correct deposits, and then finally (5; press the button that previously didn't work because it'll totally work this time. there's a difference between obscure and obtuse; going through each gamemode was genuinely a chore to do, because once i figured out that i can unlock the campaign after trying out each gamemode, i spent the barest minimum amount of time; a huge chunk of my early playthrough was loading screens. Not loading screens that i could hope for good content on the other side, no; loading screens that exist solely to stop me from doing the content i wanted to do. Even players who _WANT TO PLAY BONELABS FOR WHAT MAKES IT UNIQUE AND DONT CARE ABOUT THE STORY HAVE TO DO THIS FOR THE AVATARS._ It is an unexplained, unnecessary slog whose sole purpose is to stop players from doing what they want to do in the first place. In short, there's a huge, self-obvious difference between "the story is complicated," and _"Getting to the story_ is complicated." I don't mean to be rude when i say "this sounds like you've never played Elden Ring before" (which btw you should; the replay value is meh but the first playthrough is genuinely incredible)

In my opinion I enjoyed Bonelab's campaign more than the first one. Although it felt WAAYYY to short though. My main gripe about the game is the damn legs! The legs are actually awful when climbing, like why do my legs go limp and then get stuck on the wall when I'm trying to get on top of a surface after climbing?!?!
@kevinkeninson27842 жыл бұрын
It helps me to pull down on the right stick while climbing to crouch, it usually unsticks my legs and lets me climb up, shit workaround tho.

While I agree, that it's nice to see that there is some community-building, knowledge-sharing, conversation, I don't think it explains the hype. The hype was established very well before the game actually released. Within minutes, the game gathered hundreds of reviews, within hours, it gathered thousands of reviews like only a few VR games managed to do.

You know what, you have a good point. It does make conversation, conversations such as why the fuck did we get a seemingly half assed game that tells us to build the rest of the game for them... Sorry, I really hated the overall message of the game. I hate it so much. I thought these guys would be above Bethesda tactics. Boneworks did a better job at satisfying non-modders and non-sandboxers than Bonelabs. Bonelabs only gets good with the work of other people that wont get their credit in for Bonelabs. I at least, wanted a satisfying game first. Heck, compare the tutorial, the levels of Boneworks and the narrative maybe even the gameplay versus BoneLabs and you can see what I mean. I at least, wanted a better game before wanting to enjoy the mods, but I got a game where I didnt want to stick around for mods.

Comment #69 They had every opportunity to become THE VR "Sandbox" game before S&box releases. I loved this game as much as I could. Upset you unlock the avatars and then essentially the story is over shortly after. Beat the story in 7 hours. BW took 11. Yeah it's modable, but like BW I probably won't put 20 hours into it let alone hundreds of hours because it's missing the main driving factor. Multiplayer. BW multiplayer mods were jank and replayability would've shot through the roof had they implemented multiplayer.

Yeah, I too get a ration of S' from the "Community" for a simple grievance with the controllers. As a person we all have the right to like, dislike, ignore, etc. I think it gets the views because the Game side of VR is special needs slow in the development field. A lot of cart before the horse goes on.

Hm. I think the reason why people either love or hate it is because those are the sort of videos that get watched, and those are the people who feel inclined to write reviews. Not throwing shade at creators, but many seem to just jump on the love it or hate it train. I did neither. I really only have two complaints: First, I think the price is pretty steep for what the game and campaign offers. Yes, mods, but I don't pay SLZ for those. And second, a couple of the chapters were pretty boring and sub-par, even for an indie game, like the go-kart or moon levels, mostly boring tech demos that I wanted to skip. Other than that, the game was okay. Nothing more. Didn't hate it, didn't love it. Played it, will now move on with my life. But doesn't that make for a really boring opinion or video? ;-)

6:36 ... man this really grinds my gears. I'm a huge VR enthusiast so please don't get me wrong. I own 7 headsets and love VR. Comparing Bonelab to Elden Ring however is not a good comparison. Yes, they're both sandbox titles, but Elden Ring inspires you to explore and play more with an amazing and immersive world. The visuals are stunning and so is the audio. Bonelab looks like it's basically one step above the default Unity asset pallet / demo environment. "Mythos" looks seriously like textures out of Unity 2014 are being used. It's a sandbox sure, but I have no interest in exploring the tight corridors and uninspiring environment of Bonelab.

Tbh tho, as mentioned in the video graphic are an opinion. I would rather have a more expansive environment than top-notch, 2x3090 minimum requirement rays tracing peach fuss on your balls. While Bonelabs doesn't compare to an open-world game in this department, I feel like it made me want to explore more than any other game, significantly more than boneworks at least, where the strategy for getting collectibles is what a trash can and a dream.
