The reason why Dante can cross into the world of the dead is that it was believed that the Xoloescuincles (This is Dante's breed) were the spiritual guides of the deceased and took them to Mictlan, which is the name of the world of the dead in Mexico and also in our culture, we do not see death as something bad and that is why we have el Dia de los Muertos to remember our loved ones. ANDDDD Also, the reasons of the color of the spirit guides, its a way to represent them, and we call them Alebrijes, and i think thats all(?

This movie is very special to me. It came out in theaters when my Mom was going through chemo so I didn’t want to really endure a movie about the dead while my mom was going through that. Unfortunately, things got worse and she passed away several months later. That same year, both of my Grandmothers passed away. Music is a huge part of my family so this entire movie brought me to grieve properly and to never forget them. No pain, just love.

Xoloizcuintles are dogs who "help people go to the other side" and they were (sadly) buried alive with the dead in prehispanic times. That’s why Dante can just come and go. Also I think a lot of Mexicans just think babies and dogs can see "things that are not from this world" but not from any particular culture, more of a general thing.

What I love about Coco is that Pixar wasn’t afraid on doing the whole “it’s only adults who died” because celebrating Day of the Dead there are two versions. To celebrate the sad death of a adult(s) or death of a child(s). Sometimes it’s both. For adults we put up an alter that contains a picture, but also drinks they may have liked (alcohol most of the time) and food of course. While for a child we put up toys such as a small toy train or stuffed animals. Along with food they liked of course. No matter what, a good percentage of the time no one cries because we believe they are there with us at that very moment. And that they are in a better place.

I saw this for the first time not long after my girlfriend had suddenly passed away in her sleep, just 2 months shy of her 36th birthday. To say that it was rough would be an understatement. I had no idea that what I was going to watch would "hit home" so much. Jess, the song Imelda sings is "La Llorona" which is a traditional folk song that, depending on your interpretation and context, can be at the same time and interchangeably, a song about unattainable love and also a song about death. The title character can both be interpreted as a beautiful, aloof woman, who may or may not be dead, or as death itself.

This movie is amazing. I love the concept of Day of the Dead and wish it was a thing in my culture. The idea of being close to and sharing memories and food with people who are no longer around. It sounds stupid but the closest I've got is picturing my dad's force ghost at the cinema with me watching the latest Star Wars movie, a franchise we both love(d). It was our thing as a dad daughter duo. I feel like the ability to blur the lines between the world of living and dead is such fundamental human wish. If you understand exactly where the story is guiding you, but the emotional punch is not lessened, but instead strengthened by it, that's storytelling craftsmanship.

Hey Jess! I’m hoping that hurricane that just hit again didn’t make things worse for your grandparents in any way, but importantly hope y’all are safe 🙏🏼

Watching it again knowing about Ernesto... what does it say about him that he didn't question the existence of a great-great-grandson he'd never heard of?

I’m Mexican, I watched this with my family and it’s such a great representation of my culture, it’s not perfect, but it’s beautiful. My dad loved this movie, he cried, he laughed and simply loved to see a movie about our culture, now my dad it’s not here, but this and so much more movies and music help me remember him. Now we make him an altar for el Día de muertos, and now this movie makes me cry so hard when Hector sings to he’s daughter. It’s a beautiful song, it made me cry the first time, and now it makes me cry all the time, but I remember him. It’s just such a good movie and it hits so close to home, for my culture, my loss and bc my dad used to play he’s guitar to me when I was little, he was a great singer

I saw this when it came out on a Disney cruise and the theater was so packed that my sister had to sit on my lap so she didn’t have to be on the floor, and she cried so much during it

i remember watching it in theaters about a month after my grandma passed, i don’t think any movie will ever make me cry more. at the same time it makes me very happy seeing my culture being represented so beautifully.

Fun fact for you. Frida Kahlo was voiced by Natalia Cordova-Buckley aka Elena/Yo-Yo from Agents Of Shield.

A fun fact that I learned: The creator of Coco said that even though Miguel and Ernesto weren’t blood related Ernesto’s Blessing still would have been able to send Miguel home because they both did genuinely believe they were family. Ernesto was even very protective of Miguel, holding him back when Hector was yelling at both of them, showing us that he really did genuinely care about Miguel. But when Miguel figured out that he poisoned Hector, the little spark of genuine care for someone other then himself, came to a crashing halt. So yeah, if Hector hadn’t interrupted the moment Ernesto’s Blessing really would have been enough to send Miguel home.

I watched this movie for the first time in Mexico on a bus to some ruins. It will always remind me of that time. It was a surreal experience and I loved it.

No matter how many times I watch this movie, even when i'm the happiest, I always cry. Death is a scary topic for me, but somehow a little hope crawls it's way to my heart with Coco & tells me everything is gonna be ok.
