I read the book before I watched the movie, and the husband isn't this much of an a-hole in it. He is not cheating on her, he wants her to divorce him so her family won't be mad at him for initiating the split. The family is also soooo much worse and a lot more classicist. The movie made us feel more sympathy for the billionaire who underestimated her husband, and idk if I like that tbh
@noahorakwue26532 жыл бұрын
@@tainaaguiar5039 I liked the Astrid Subplot in the book more too, but I'm willing to tolerate the film version assuming we don't have to see her husband in the sequels because from book 1 to books 2+3 he goes from being sympathetic to a massive a-hole really quickly!

The watch that Michelle Yeoh is wearing is probably her own. The emerald ring is definitely hers. She offered to let the film use it after seeing the prop that they were going to use, and felt the prop didn't look expensive enough. Michelle Yeoh is a real crazy rich asian.🤑

I really disliked how they changed Michael's storyline in the movie... Spoilers for the book! In the books, he never cheated on astid, he pretended like he did to get out of the family (without it reflecting badly on astrid) because he couldn't stand how they belittled him for his finanical situation (and how he felt money was the most important thing for her, essentially what he said in the car) but still wanted Astrid to be able to save face - if everyone thought he cheated on her, it would only reflect badly on him, everyone would feel bad for astrid and he'd get out! Not sure if they're still making the second movie but I always felt like they meant for this to be revealed in movie 2 with the way they handled the cheating storyline (in the books it's revealed in book 1). Idk they turned it into this whole Astrid girlboss storyline when it was supposed to be commentary on classism and michael was a much more layered and nuanced character... (i still love astrid though and she's a great character in the books too!)

"Why did he said it like that? 'This is a private hotel miss'?" To signal to her that she looks poor for the place and probably can't afford it, and she is not welcome. In a private hotel the owner "has the right to refuse to accept a person as a guest".

I never really hated Nick's mother in this movie, cause every Asian mom is like that in their sons, they're just over protective especially with the hiers, I'm not saying what she did to Rachel is good, but I can understand it's not really rare in our culture
@athenstar102 жыл бұрын
"You'll never be good enough." Nick's mom is just telling the reality of it. FYI: In Asian culture marriage is a union of two families so it is a big deal to choose a wife/husband that grew up with the same values, background, beliefs, etc. Nomatter how in-laws get along, there will be something wrong to be found , specially by a mother-in-law. That's why anyone will never be good enough.

Tan hua blooms extremely rarely and always only at night, and for a very short time (wilts before dawn). There's even a Chinese saying that basically means 'as short lived and rare as tan huas blooming'. So it's considered very auspicious to see them blooming, and yes, it's a whole thing in Chinese culture to organise Tan hua viewings (for rich people, not common folks like us.)
