In the Mahjong game, she revealed her cards to show that she had a winning hand and couldve won but she gave it up so Eleanor could win in the same way she was willing to give up her relationship with Nick but telling Eleanor she only won because Rachel let her. i had tears ROLLING down my face... the way she felt like his family didn't accept her, and yet they looked at each other with such love... the way he was so nice to the kids... looking at how happy his best friend and his bride are, while thinking about how astrid must've looked at her husband in the way at some point, only for him to do that to her... I was so overwhelmed, literally tears of both happiness and sadness at the same time, I was NOT okay lol

The thing about Asian culture is that we tend to prioritize family over personal needs. In here, people see individuality as more of a western concept. For Asians, filial duties come before anything else, and familial ties are usually strong. Asians usually sacrifice personal dreams and ambition in favor of providing for the family, or basically just for the family’s better interest. Since we belong in such a tight-knit unit, our individual actions may reflect upon the household and affect our reputation amongst peers and communities. So we have to be careful about the choices we make too! Hope this was helpful on why the movie focused so much on filial piety and tradition!

The Mahjong scene is always my favorite in this movie. Beyond her having a winning hand but not "taking it", it's kind of a culmination of her realizing her self-worth. Alongside that, there are also touches such as her seated in the "West" position, while Eleanor is to the East. Rachel also discards the precise tile that she knew Eleanor needed to win (in Mahjong you take turns discarded and pulling new tiles from the center). Also I didn't connect this at first but my friend pointed out that she was a game theory professor who had been teaching students at the beginning of the movie to play "to win" and never "not to lose", using poker (kinda a western parallel to mahjong). It kind of nicely parallels the end scene where she was playing to win, and she had the winning hand, but she chose not to play it. Just get chills every time I rewatch that part haha.

Astrid is superior honestly, we stan. Rachel had no bad looks in this movie, she is just stunninf and I cannot. This is my sister's favourite romantic movie, so I've had to watch it many times with her and the wedding scene still gives me chills and you can literally feel the love that the director poured into this movie and if I don't get a sequel?

Mike Chang's character is basically Astrid's ex fiance in the books. They didn't work out back then because their families were basically forcing them to break up. But now with her separation from her husband, old feelings return and they are set to rekindle something...... if the next movie ever gets made 🙃

Rachel and the mother in law were playing mahjong, they were both waiting to win on the same tile. (Rachel is a statistics professor so she could probably tell). So when she was holding the 8 tile and discarded it, it was symbolic of Rachel being able to ‘win’ Nick from her but she chose not to and instead gives the mother in law the winning tile. Hence why when she shows her hand at the end she’s telling her that this is her choice to back out. Also the pronunciation of 8 means “rich” in Chinese so I think that’s another nod at Nick’s family wealth.

18:00 As a person who plays Mahjong lemme try to explain the meaning behind the mahjong scene: TLDR: Rachel drew a winning card and could have won, but instead gave the opportunity to Nick's mom who won with the card that Rachel gave her. Rachel then reveals her hand, showing that she could have won the entire time AND that she knew that giving up on that card would result in Nick's mother winning, directly mirroring her decision to reject Nick and letting his mother have a "stable and lasting family". Ok so Rachel draws a winning card (and 8) and after playing around with it in her hands, she decides to let go of the opportunity to win right then and there. Since she was shown to be really good at this game since the beginning of the movie, she had pretty much predicted what Nick's mom needed to win (which also happens to be an eight) which is why she decided to give up the 8. "there's no winning, cause if Nick chose me he'll lose his family," which can be represented by her keeping the eight and winning, "and if he chose his family he might spend the rest of his life resenting you" which would be if she kept the eight, but chose not to reveal that she'd won and instead throw out another card, continuing the game, (which may end up in both of them losing and her wondering what would have happened if she didn't keep the eight/had chose to win, kinda like how Nick would be wondering what kind of future he could have had if Rachel had agreed and he did give up on his family or if his mother hadn't interfered in the first place.) She chooses the third option, to willingly give up on the 8, and giving Nick's mom the win, just like how Rachel rejected his proposal so that Nick can find a "better girl" that meets his mother's standards, giving her a "perfect family" which is why she says: "It was all because of me, a poor, raised by a single mother, low class, immigrant nobody" before revealing her hand. Nick's mom won thinking that it was her hard work (in this case "luck") that gave her this win, only to find out that it was only because Rachel willingly sacrificed her happiness. Earlier in the scene, Nick's mom said "only a fool would foil a winning hand" and "All Americans think about is their own happiness". Rachel proves her wrong by not only giving up on a "winning hand" aka Nick, which would obviously be extremely beneficial for her if she was to become a rich man's wife, but also proves that she's not selfish; she thinking's for Nick's happiness but also his mother's while Nick's mom never stopped and considered Rachel at all. At the end of the day, it wasn't because she was intimidated or thinks that she's not enough that she left, but because she wasn't selfish and loves him too much to have him choose between her and his family.

Being Asian (I'm South Asian) you really understand where the moms are coming from and can't bring yourself to hate them in any way because I've seen this a lot in our culture where mothers-in-law are rude to their daughter in law because they feel they are not good enough for their sons, it also comes from them being treated the same way by their mother in law and so on, it's a horrible situation that has gone on for generations and it takes time to unlearn it and not treat people the way you were treated especially when you know no other way and in this movie, you can see they were born in a different generation and had to fight for everything they own and went through so much shit so they only want what's best for their children, even though they may not be able to express it well, in a way that looks like they're not supportive and whatnot but they truly love their children and want them to have an easy happy life that they didn't necessarily have. And this movie really shows the whole unlearning process and how she comes around in the end, also realizing your child does know what is best for them in their life and my favourite women supporting women
