Also, Ariel signing over her voice to Ursula's "unbreakable" magic contract is meta AF. Jodi Bensen, the speaking AND singing voice of Ariel, STILL WORKS FOR DISNEY TODAY. She is Ariel in EVERYTHING. Considering that Ariel's father is overprotective and aggressive and destroyed all her prized possessions, it doesn't shock me that she risked her self-destruction. And her sisters didn't know much about her interests and Scuttle was feeding her misinformation, so that didn't help. She was angry, hurt, and curious about the human world, which Ursula used to her advantage.

You mentioning how interesting a history between Triton and Ursula would be is actually very appropriate- in the first draft of the movie they were actually brother and sister! This plot point stayed in the film even through the recording of dialogue before being cut for time. The sibling rivalry was reinstated for the Broadway musical in 2007.

As a musical theatre Stan, you'll appreciate this: Ashman and Menken wrote Little Mermaid riiiiight after finishing up Little Shop of Horrors, and there is a LOT of similarities in the scores between the two. Listen to "Somewhere That's Green" next to "Part of Your World" for example. They are like 90% the exact same song. It's wild. Also, it should be noted that The Little Mermaid was the first film of the Disney golden age/Renaissance. And the first film to use a legit Musical Theatre format in it's story to song progression. From this point onward, the 90's Disney films followed this more "Broadway" book musical formula because TLM was so successful at it. Menken and Ashman really set the bar with this and changed the face of the entire company.

Yes, this. [nod] Disney started out as *the* feature length animation house, but then they wandered off into the weeds with meh-level movies like The Fox and the Hound and The Aristocats. Disney animation had faded to almost nothing when suddenly Little Mermaid came out, and it was fantastic -- great story, great characters, great animation, and an awesome soundtrack. It's like someone pulled out the paddles and zapped Disney back to life with this movie.
@leilanyx

@@angiepen i don't see the aristocats as particularly meh - its actually a childhood favourite of mine, aha - it's just not their most popular or talked about movie.
@angiepen
@angiepen 2 жыл бұрын
@@leilanyx Of course there are people who like it, and seeing it first as a child will impact that. I have incredibly fond memories of The Incredible Mr. Limpet, a mixed live/animated movie (not Disney, though) with Don Knotts, which I saw first as a child. Nobody remembers it now, and looking back on it with adult eyes, it wasn't anything to write home about. It was pretty meh, but I still love it. [shrug] But those middle era movies by Disney, including The Aristocats, were meh when compared with the early era movies like Cinderella and Snow White, and the recent era movies like Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, the Lion King, etc. There's a clear difference in quality, as well as popularity. The middle era movies weren't as good, weren't as magically wonderful, as either the early or late era movies. The (hugely) declining box office numbers pulled in by middle era Disney movies compared with the earlier movies attests to the declining quality. A lot of people thought Disney animation was washed up, and Disney corporate was strongly considering getting out of feature length animation entirely. Luckily for everyone, they decided to make another push, and ended up with Little Mermaid. There's a reason the recent era films are referred to as the Disney Renaissance; compared with the middle era movies, they're an order of magnitude better. This has nothing to do with which individuals love which individual movies. I think Disney's animated Robin Hood is a wonderful movie, but compared with either Cinderella or Little Mermaid, it's definitely in the meh category. Doesn't make me love it any less, and doesn't change the fact that it's not up there with the major leaguers.

“What if there was a past between Ursula and King Triton? I would love to read that sort of stuff.” Well, Ursula is Triton’s little sister and Triton banished Ursula from the palace, so I assume there’s a pretty tumultuous past. Mention of the relation was dropped from the movie script but apparently still exists in reference material and other stories.

So glad you enjoyed it! In the original fairy tale, the little mermaid made the trade for her voice (and constant, stabbing pain every time she took a step!) because her voice was the most precious thing she owned, so she had to give it up for her desire. Also, the reason its a kiss (at least in this movie) is because the little mermaid wanted to become human and have a human soul (merpeople had long lives, then turned into foam when they died). If the prince truly loved her, part of his soul would flow into her through the kiss to create a new soul. Unfortunately, the fairy tale didn't end NEARLY as happy as this. Ursula did want her to fail; but when you think about it, it actually worked in Ariel's favor. Eric fell in love with who she was (yes, three days is incredibly fast but they couldn't do the MONTHS that was the original story) as opposed to simply marrying her because of her voice. Not only that, Ursula tells Ariel upfront what would happen if she failed, and even showed her what happened to those that couldn't pay the price. In the original screenplay, Ursula is Triton's sister and her design was a lionfish. Sorry for the long geeking out; this was one of my favorites growing up!

i hate when people say ariel left her home for a man. Like, you say she was dumb because she was a literal mermaid and she gave up on that, but in her point of view she was trapped, she couldn't explore the real world, know the humans, etc, and she sang a literal classic just talking about how she wanted to know the human world and get out of this buble her that keeps her. And about her leaving her home for a man, she fell in love with him, and when ursula offered human legs to her, the first thing she thought about wasn't the prince at all, but the surface. She could finally realize her dream to see the human world, and she wasn't even searching for eric when she came out of the water, she just ended up finding him there and he invited her to stay at his castle for some time, and they fell in love after that. Eric was her oportunity to see the world, not to give up on her life like that. Btw, at first, she wanted to kiss him because of her deal with ursula, but they fell in love along the way.

In the Broadway musical version of this, Ursula and Triton do have a history together! According to that show they’re siblings, and their father gave each of them control of half the ocean plus one of his magical items. Triton got the trident while Ursula got the magic shell. And they each ruled over half the ocean until Triton figured out how evil Ursula was (pretty sure she was actively eating some of her subjects) and banished her. This was supposed to be in the movie as well but ended up being cut. (But you should actually check out the musical because there’s some really good additional songs, plus name one other show where you can see half the cast in Heelys.) Also third movie explains what happened to Ariel’s mother and why Triton hates humans. Basically she was crushed to death between a ship and some rocks, and Triton has resented humans ever since for causing her death.

I have a top 5 animated Disney movie list, and this is definitely one of them. I remember going to the theater to see this with my family at 16. I was a bit skeptical of whether I'd like it because I already knew the tragic real Hans Christian Anderson's fable behind The Little Mermaid. It was very dark and tragic. For those who don't know....she did give up her voice. The prince thought one of the missionary nuns on the beach that day, had rescued him. He did marry her instead of Ariel. Her sisters wanted her to come home, so they went to the witch and made a deal. They had to give up their arms to get a dagger that Ariel must use to kill the Prince on his wedding night in order to come home as a mermaid again. If she didn't do it before that evening was up, she would turn into sea foam and die. Well....she was about to do it while they were sleeping on their wedding night, but she saw his sleeping face in the moonlight and couldn't bring herself to do it, because she still loved him. She dropped the dagger. Jumped into the ocean and turned into sea foam. I'm sure you've already deducted why they never showed a mother for the girls, and why their dad was so overprotective of his girls going to the surface. After all, this is a Disney movie. Divorce isn't an option, so that leaves.... There are two more, straight to video, movies on Ariel's story. I never saw the last one, but I got the gist of what it's supposed to be about. Prince Eric is definitely my favorite prince. He proved that he could love her in spite of them coming from 2 different worlds. He was out of his league dealing with Ursula, but went to fight for his love, anyways. He was attracted to her heroism of rescuing him, and her voice...willing to marry her without ever seeing her. He completely respected her by not trying to kiss her, when he didn't even know her first name. Respect!

11:05 it needs to be a contractual thing, she needs something to hold over Triton because he's a lot more powerful than her.

I love that you are enjoying the Disney Princess movies. I recently found you in my recommended feed cause I’ve been watching a bunch of movie reacts this year, especially from BillyBinger. I don’t know if you’ve watched it yet, but considering I know you already like magical and fantasy, I highly suggest Stardust. You’d be surprised of the star celebrities in it. 😊 And there’s a lot of contextual clues to keep your ears/eyes on.

Favourite Disney movie although I still wonder how it would have been if they’d gotten their original want to voice Ursula .. they wanted Bea Arthur ( Dorothy Golden Girls ) to voice her 😁

It's funny that you bring up "Under the Sea" being the "Let It Go" of this era. Technically, this era DID have a "Let It Go" parallel. It was "Part of Your World." I strongly recommend looking into the history of this film. This movie literally saved Disney's animation department. No Mermaid, no Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, FROZEN.

Fun Facts: > Ursula and her sister Morgana (the villain of The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea) are voiced by the same actress Pat Carol. > Ursula and Morgana are Cecaelias (mythical creatures that are half human half octopus); although in The Little Mermaid The Series, they’re called Octopids. > Ursula and Triton are brother and sister and children of Posiedon the Greek god of the seas. > In the licensed version of The Little Mermaid the musical, it’s explained that Ursula was the youngest of seven daughters like Ariel. Although she was lonely and unloved by her father Posiedon. He gave her the magic shell to try to buy her love. She used dark sea magic to kill her older sisters to be the favorite. When her father didn’t acknowledge his love for her, she killed him to rule the seas. When Triton (who was the youngest child and only son) became of age, he regained control of the seas, the throne and the trident from her. For punishment she was banished. In the final battle, it’s revealed that Ursula killed Queen Athena, Ariel’s mother and King Triton’s wife. He thought humans killed her and was shocked at this revelation. > In the Descendants franchise, Ursula has a daughter named Uma played by China Anne McLain as you know. > Therefore considering their family tree, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades are brothers. Hercules is the son of Zeus. King Triton and Ursula are the children of Poseidon. Therefore Hercules is their cousin. And Ariel and her sisters are his second cousins. And then descendants three we know that Mal is the daughter of Hades and Uma is the daughter of Ursula. So that makes them second cousins to Ariel, third cousins to Hercules, and that makes them technically cousins.

02:43 - 02:49 7. Like the 7 seas.🌊🌈 10:29 - 10:34 Because True Love's Kiss can break any curse."Once Upon a Time"dixit.(And also because if it was just a regular kiss it would be far too easy to obtain!;-P) 15:18 - 15:24 Well...no,because that's a totally different way of swimming.1st of all she needs to catch her breath and she never had to do that as a mermaid,2nd of all..have you ever tried to swim with fins?It's *not at all the same* as swimming without them!You need to get used to them!Same when you go from swimming with a fin your entire life and you're then suddenly stuck with human feet.Also..think about walking in heels.You're still on the ground and you're still walking,but this doesn't mean that it will immediately be as easy as walking with normal shoes.

I've watched most of your movie commentaries, and I absolutely love your reactions and comments. But as an avid otaku, I'm eager to see another anime movie commentary and reaction done by you, and I'm really hoping you can do another one. I can recommend "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time", "Silent Voice" and a movie with the same creator of Your Name which is "Weathering With You". There is also Studio Ghibli's movies "Spirited Away" "Arrietty" "Howl's Moving Castle" and "Grave of the Fireflies"

In the original movie script, apparently, we got the backstory of Ursula and King Triton. It was dropped from the movie but made its way into the broadway musical (check out Ursula’s song “I Want The Good Times Back” from the play). Basically, they were brother and sister, each ruling half of the Oceanic Realm, but then Triton banished Ursula for her wicked misrule and consolidated the kingdoms under his own imperial rule as benevolent dictator or god king or whatever his title is.
