I watched Encanto and it made me ugly cry & laugh at the same time. This is my reaction to Encanto and it was a super fun movie to watch, cry, and laugh along to. The, we don’t talk about Bruno situation and song was great. I truly do love the whole Madrigal family they were all likable. Abuela was a little bit hard to understand at first because she was being very rude and mean to mirabel, but she got her act together and explained herself so I was able to forgive her. I appreciate the fact that we got a look into a realistic dysfunctional family, because I think it’s something a lot of us have to deal with in some form. Mental health and dealing with traumas can be hard but it’s still very important for us to seek assistance and deal with those things so that we are less likely to harm someone else. That’s why I was so happy when Abuela realized that she was the problem and got he act together. All in all this Disney movie was realistic, funny, memorable, and just enjoyable and that’s why it’s my favorite Disney movie! Almost everyone gets mad at Abuela as the movie goes on, eventually, but I thought she was a very realistic depiction of both someone from an older generation (esp back then when everyone was basically expected to toe the line with the Matriarch), and as someone who had never had a chance to grieve a terrible loss. She didn't just lose her love, she literally watched him get hacked to death by rebels or soldiers (they are deliberately vague, but most believe that this movie starts with the 1000 days war in Columbia around the turn of the 20th century). After that, people basically immediately turned to her to lead them because it was her miracle that saved everyone, plus she had to raise three infants on her own. It's a recipe for disaster that I have seen in many forms over the years working with kids and families going through mental health and addiction crises. The viewers I worry about are the ones who watch through the end, see what Abuela went through, and see Mirabel forgive her and bring everyone together, and still hate on her. That's almost always going to indicate someone projecting their feelings about a real person in their life that they have unresolved trauma with.

Yes Abuela went through a whole lot, thats why I was saying that mental health is very important but also dealing with tramas as well. However it’s not an easy situation, like you said she had to raise 3 kids right after she just went through those horrible things. So she didn’t have to time to deal with her mental health. when she was putting all that pressure on everyone of course we were all probably sad or even mad. But what’s important is she corrected her behavior and she deserves a second chance at least. she is only human. I was so happy that mirabel was able to help Abuela find her way back and I forgave her immediately. who am I to say she is a bad women, when I don’t know how I would respond to that kind of trama. I don’t think I would do something like that but I do think it’s realistic like you said, great comment!

One of the beautiful things about this movie is the actress singing "Waiting On a Miracle" was, at the time of the recording of that song, in the first stages of labor. By the next day she had a little girl.

Mirabel did get a gift, as the new front door showcases her (in front of her family). The casita door is _her_ door now: the house and the family are the "realm" of her gift (like animals are for Tonito, and flowers are for Isabella). The "action" of her gift is one of healing -- like her father says to Julieta, "She takes after you" (healing) -- by bringing and keeping her family together.

Mirabel didn't get a Gift in the end; Jared Bush, one of the producers of Encanto, specifically said that "Mirabel doesn't have a Gift because she doesn't need one. There's no reason as to why or why not she gets a Gift; that's just who she is. Mirabel is exactly who she's supposed to be." Because the message the producers wanted to give the audience is that you're more than what you can do, you're more than what you're good at. You shouldn't pin your self-worth to a certain skill you have; you're perfect just the way you are. Mirabel doesn't have a Gift, nor does she get one later.

Having seen this a couple times now I really think Casita was Abuelo Pedro, because of the way Casita wave when it comes alive and how they waved at each other when they met. When the house is falling apart someone shouts, 'the house is falling' as the portrait of Abuelo Pedro is falling off the wall. I find that so romantic in the scene of their flashback. She's so heartbroken and filled with grief and he's all around her. I think too it's interesting upon review viewings to really pay attention to the things Abuela is saying. She's actually drowned out but you hear so much of how she feels this drive to be worthy of the miracle and that's where she puts that pressure on her family from. It's sad but so relatable. Like survivors guilt and imposter syndrome but how can she be the villain when she just wants to serve others. Like even Camilo, he's shapeshifting into moms and watching babies so they can rest. It's all about 'how can we use our gifts to serve others'. Some people call her the villain but what I love about this movie is just about seeing people for who they are and everyone has a light and a shadow. It's insanely beautiful.

Abuela is honestly sweet as gold she just had her issues, but who wouldn’t after what she been through. Fun thing to note, both "sides" of Bruno's prophecy were true. Mirabel was, ultimately, the reason for the house breaking (by calling out Abuela) AND was the reason the house was rebuilt and the magic restored. Also, Mirabel is basically the new keeper of the magic. When the house was rebuilt, the candle didn't return. It was Maribel who caused the magic to return

One of the directors confirmed that Mirabel received an entirely new miracle. She didn’t revive the old one, Abuela’s miracle was destroyed along with the family home. So yes, she has the same gift as Abuela, she is the keeper of the miracle going forward

I love all the music, Lin Manuel Miranda is a genius, and all writers who helped are all amazing. It’s my favorite ever too, it’s soooo good. One interesting thing I learned was when Mirabel sang Waiting on a Miracle, and sang about what she would do, she ends up actually doing it in the movie. She ending up moving the mountains, helping Isa grow new trees and flowers, showed the family something new, heal what’s broken, she heals the family.

I have a theory that when Mirabel put her hand on the doorknob and it disappeared the candle flickered and dimmed it transferred some of the magic from the miracle to her because it recognized the direction that things were going and wanted to safeguard the family should it go out.

If you're ever inclined to rewatch this movie, there's a huge wealth of subtle details in it no matter how you approach it. The Colombian cultural details, all of the little expressions and animation nuances, the repeated motifs and other nuances in the music-- just off the top of my head, Abuela's verse in "The Family Madrigal" uses the same melody as "Dos Oruguitas" (showing how her mindset is still mired in the trauma of her husband's death), Isabela's prophecy in "We Don't Talk About Bruno" is a preview of the melody of "What Else Can I Do?" (because the latter is the promised fulfillment of the former), and Mirabel's first verse in the same song basically lifts the prophecy's melody wholesale (showing how she's finally come to understand and empathize with Isabela). Let me tell you, my favorite characters are Isabela and Mirabel in large part because of the absolute wealth of little details they've been given. There's so much subtle foreshadowing for Isabela's later character development packed into the earlier parts of the movie; the breakfast scene alone somehow manages to summarize the entire dynamic between her and Abuela while still being completely missable on repeated rewatches. The part that people tend to point out the most, though, is this: Isabela clearly shows shocked distress at the idea of having five kids with Mariano, which is accompanied by an involuntary expression of her power as flowers in her hair, including a single white flower that doesn't match the rest-- an imperfection. Abuela immediately picks out that flower and throws it away, because of course Isabela is not allowed to be imperfect. I've known about this movie for about a week and I still haven't even watched the entirety of it from beginning to end, yet I could go on and on about Isabela and Mirabel all day. You could probably get me going for a good amount of time on any of the other Madrigals too if you got me the right way; they're all beautiful and wonderful in their own unique ways. I just love this movie and pretty much everything about it. Feel free to let me know if you're interested in some of the other things I've noticed/picked up from other people. Just as a parting fact: Did you know that "We Don't Talk About Bruno" is inspired by a type of acapella called a *madrigal*?

In early storyboards, Abuela was giving birth as her husband lay dying on the riverbank, and his body was forcibly left by the river to rot. I'm kinda glad that Disney didn't go with that idea, since the movie was already able to effortlessly flood the waterworks. 😭

I love this movie and the message it gives us that we are all perfect because of our flaws and that nothing is ever perfect as well. I liked the songs and their family love for each other all through out the movie. You should check out the movie Soul it's a Disney Pixar movie that isn't a musical but it has amazing sound effects and an aazing message as well.

When everyone else touch the knob the magic came out of them... When Mirabel touch some of the magic went into her.. Mirabel gift was being strongest to reimbue the magic of the house cause the magic was fueled by love. The CANDLE burn down but there was a new candle storing up love in her heart. Mirabel is basically going to be the next Abuela in the future… if you notice… Abuela doesn’t have a gift either… she’s the matriarch of that house. The house built itself for Abuela. Therefore… that’s why Mirabel has no gift… she’s the next in line to become the owner of the house. Her gift is family/unity.

Note the phrase, "open your eyes." It's said before a gift ceremony. It's said before Mirabel puts the doorknob on the new house. Mirabel also says it, though, to abuela in "Waiting on a Miracle." Also note how when Casita is revived by Mirabel, it brings her in and doesn't bring anyone else in until she invites them in. Lastly, when Isabela grows flowers on her hair after hearing that Mariano wants five babies, abuela instinctively picks off and discards the one flower that wasn't perfect.

I literally just watched this movie after working 3 days at State Farm Arena working Disney on Ice featuring frozen and Encanto and the movie literally made me cry in tears. I don’t understand how someone can be strong and happy like me on the outside and still deal with the pain and sadness of going through a lot of internal things. Yet still loved by a loving family and everything…nobody but God 😭🙏🏿

Going through the loss of a parent to cancer, mother and I almost lost our house and everything financially, I been through constant rejection, constant people treating me like sh*t even when I do everything that’s expected of me dealing with all the pressures of life. Surface pressure really hit me 😭😢

I really appreciate u and being apart of ya community. It’s hard being the strong one when you had nobody there for you in your times of trouble but you was there for them. Losing a parent at 17 was super tough, watching my mother go through it was tough especially she having money troubles too and me. Smiling has been my strength but it also hides all the tears and stress 😭😭😢. I went to therapy, nothing worked. Mmmm 😭 I don’t know if I can carry it all

Bruno's comment about rain at Pepa's wedding comes with (perhaps unintentional... in-universe, anyway) Columbian subtext. To tell someone it will rain on their wedding day, in Colombian culture, is a euphemism for saying that the marriage will not last. So, it makes sense why she'd be so mad about it, even if he clearly didn't mean it that way.

It almost seems like the magic runs out and has to "put itself" into someone every few generations. So when the door disappeared, it went into her. Like the house "reset". Then she gave birth to the magic again. So she didn't have a gift, but was the one who gave the gift. Don't take my word for it since I just vaguely remember reading this in a youtube comment section somewhere, but I think the little squeak that Dolores does is something that Colombians do when they gossip? If something confuses me in this movie, I find that it's usually best to assume it's a Colombian thing that I lack the proper cultural context for until proven otherwise.

They are stories about how we get to choose our own path and not just give in to what is expected of us. 🥰 The music and choreography are amazing, too! 😍

Not sure is someone gave you the answer to if mirabel gets a gift or not. But the answer is No but yes. Mirabel is the new miracle keeper (same as abeula) she is the one who gave Antonio his gift, this is signified by the foreshadowing stuffed animal that she gives home before the ceremony and the fact that his door is the only door that shows him at his current age instead of as a full grown adult (see the ceremony photos on the wall that are briefly paused on in the movie). She is the new matriarch of the family.
