I love that Isabella and Luisa have the exact same song, played to the opposite side of the coin. Luisa spends her whole song talking about what the pressure and expectations have done to her mental and emotional stability, with a short break about how nice it would be to drop it all and take a break. But Isabella's song is mostly about how exciting the possibilities of breaking free are, with a short break to talk about how unhappy she is. They both do something really well, and they're both so, so tired of it.

I agree 100%. I love that there is this common through-line in all three sisters' songs about what's happening under the surface. Isabella is singing about seeing there is more to her than her looks and this perfect persona. Louisa is singing about seeing that she is stressed and need some time to relax period and Maribel is singing about if you look under that surface-level you'll see she is not fine with how her family treats her she just wants them to accept her and include her.

In “All of You”, they switch their motifs in their moments during the rebuilding. It’s also when they sing about being themselves (Luisa wants to be herself and be able to express her insecurities; Isabela also wants to be herself, and be a botanist, and get her hands dirty)

Talking about Bruno, and his prophecy; one of the coolest parts of "We don't talk about Bruno" is when you realize why Isabella's part of the song is there. At first it is being framed as if she is just spoiled, since that's how Mirabel sees her. The reason she is complaining with the rest of the town though, is because Bruno promised she would have the life of her dreams; but instead she is miserable, and about to marry a man she doesn't love. It completely reframes her as a character, once you hear this song, and go back to listen to the others.

i LOVE how her vocal style changes, between songs and within this song. She starts with a very Disney Princess-Or-Ingénue voice, on the more choral and breathy side. And as the song progresses, she goes more loud, more full, more bright, and with that last ‘do’ just BELTING it. It’s such a great way to mirror how she’s breaking out of expectations to be more genuine.

I really like Isabella's line of "how far do these roots go down" because as i watched the movie more it felt like a question that she's asking herself. To me, it was like she was asking herself "how long have i felt like this?" In relation to how she felt trapped into fitting the picture of what everyone saw her to be. It really drove home to me that the family needed to heal, because it wasn't just luisa that felt that way. She felt that she needed to be perfect in every way and , probably unknowingly, putting her wants and true feelings aside to make the people around her (especially abuela) happy, even though she (and luisa in her song) felt hurt and pressured on the inside.

I’m so glad to see someone else point out this line. It gets overtaken by Mirabel’s part there but I feel like it’s actually a part of the core of the movie itself. “How far do these roots go down?” How long has she felt to big for the “perfect” mold she’s been forced into? How long has this been a problem within the family? How long has she, and all her family, been holding back?

There's another callback to the "We Don't Talk About Bruno" tune in here too. When Mirabel sings "You just seem like your life's been a dream since the moment you opened your eyes." It's almost the tune Isabella sang about her prophecy in the song about Bruno, which really ties it back to Isabella finally realizing her life can be what she wants and opens up to her power growing and approaching the life she dreamed of.

It is a leitmotif in a way, but I can't recall any other time I've seen a portion of the bridge being used that way, as opposed to a chorus or just a single riff. What I love is that if you compare her diction and pronunciation in We don’t talk about Bruno to this you can see the change. She at first didn't really listent to Isabella's song, she was just trying to get a hug. It wasn't until she stopped and really saw her sister, not as everyone else did- as this perfect flawless person but as a women just rrying to find herself- that she started trying to connect with her. The show has a lot of depth to it. This song really shows something about the magic in how each ability is matched to its character. I think one of the elements of what ability each person has is actually born from the type of person they are. Here, Isabella shows that instead of being the perfect girl, she's actually the free spirited artist. Imagine loving art and being force to make repetitive commercial art? That's basically what Isabella's life became after getting her gift. She was forced to only grow they same thing over and over again because it was pleasing to others. She did this so much that she never realized she even had the potential to do more. The journey she takes in this song reflects so many artists journey as they explore various mediums such as colored pencils, pastels, inks, paints, carving, etc. I think by the end she was getting to her charcoal phase, lol. More seemed to be on her than the surface she was working on.

I’ve been watching different people react to this song and your the first one I can remember actually pointing out the “How far do the roots go down” line! That one always hit me! It’s such a strong line! Not just for Isa but for the whole family.

There's a really nifty detail here. When Mirabel starts singing about how she never realized what Isabela's life was actually like, she uses the same melody Isabela uses for her part in We Don't Talk About Bruno, simbolizing the fact that Mirabel is now progressing from only being able to see her sister's façade that she put on for the sake of the family and especially Abuela, the façade represented in that "angelical" segment of Isabela's in We Don't Talk About Bruno, to seeing her sister for who she is, thus matching her current song properly. The sheer detail and complexity in Lin-Manuel Miranda's composition style, good grief. Layers for days.

Isa has the saddest story to me! She is a cut out of perfection but its not even her idea of perfection it's her Abuela's! She is the one that looks most like her Abuela as well they have the same complexion and they are the only people in the family with straight hair! It's the saddest thing ever because she doesn't even know what she wants, she knows what she doesn't want but not what she really wants! Like Bruno wants to be helpful to the family and he loves them and Luisa wants a break to relax but Isa we don't know what she wants she never even thought about what she wants because she has been expected to do what ever her Abuela says since she got her gift! Which is why she is questioning it now like what else can I do when I'm actually making my own choices! Awww this movie is so heartbreaking and a WHOLE BOP!

The title "what else can I do" is also a pun - at first seemed like it was going to be the sad meaning (there's nothing else possible) but became the exploration (there are options to try).

Yo Knox, as always a great job breaking down anything you listen to. You should check out "The Family Madrigal". If you want to branch out to more Lin Manuel's stuff you should do any song from "In the heights". Keep up the grind and always spreading your knowledge and wisdom.

I love the german line when they both huges : "und ich verdank dir mehr als Blumen" which is a variation of a common sentence in Germany (thanks for flowers) and means " and I owe more from you than only flowers", you have a little foreshadowing again, that Mirabel is the rescue for the whole family, including Isabellas gift restoration and new freedom. So beautiful ^^

Another connection i see is that on Bruno's prophecy he said that Isa's power will grow like the grapes that thrive on the vine and once she has this breakthrough of herself, the whole town is filled with purple flowers emulating grapes.

I've watched this clip and your reaction to this song several times, and I just noticed something. Whenever we see Isabella, she is often on a swing, or on her canopy bed, with more swing action. But if you pay attention, she is holding onto the vines of her swing (or bed) like prison bars. It's symbolic of her feeling of being caged by the expectations of graceful perfection. It's another level of layers that I JUST noticed.

I've seen many reaction videos to Encanto songs, but most were first time reactions without knowing either the song or the film. I like your analysis more because its more in depth, as you can also put the songs elements into the perspective of character development.

Also love the art of this song too. Each branch of the family has their own color scheme. Pepa’s side is yellow and her sisters side is blue. But Isabella wears pink in line with Abuela’s red scheme and by the end of the song Isabella is in a dark blue almost black dress, finally in line with her immediate family.
