Ye u r although it’s not a bad thing to have fun with them but for me they’re way too formulaic and I enjoy db and z fights because of the story behind it but in the movies the story is rarely there. Fusion reborn does the best job at telling a simple story with gorgeous action and wrath of the dragon tells a rlly good story for 95% of the movie and tanks the ending by forcing goku to get the win. The formulaic storytelling throughout the movies r why I don’t ever wanna watch most of them again

I do agree that Goku stealing the kill at the end felt forced and ruined what could be a unique and heartbreaking death. Although I didn't really like that Goku tanks the story and kills Hirudegarn instead of Trunks, I will have to admit that the Dragon Fist is the coolest technique Goku has ever used and seeing Goku go SSJ3 and take Hirudegarn out was badass, but it doesn't take away the fact that he stole the kill at the last second when the movie wasn't about Goku. Still, I loved the movie, and Tapion is one of the characters I wish would become canon one day.

@blackrose8418 Yeah, that's true. Would be a tearjerking ending and give Tapion a tragic death. It's understandable for Trunks to be unable to kill Tapion while Hirudegarn was sealed within him after bonding with Tapion. As Mark said, it could be the origin of how Future Trunks got the Z Sword. Still, it was unlikely for Trunks to be able to kill Tapion while Hirudegarn is sealed within Tapion. He's still a young kid, so I can at least understand. Still, having him kill Tapion would make the movie stand out in a good way, becoming among my favorite movies. At least the Dragon Fist was a badass move. Still doesn't excuse Goku stealing the show when it was not about him

His main motivation nowadays is to fight people stronger than him, not beating or killing his opponents because he's in a life or death battle. I've always thought the whole point of the Broly Second Coming ending was that Goku wasn't really there, it was supposed to be a big moment for Gohan showing that he can do anything if he believes in himself enough. is it done well? I liked Second Coming as a Kid and I still like Trunks and Goten's antics but the movie lacked personality. I did like the humor upon rewatching but Broly was really meh. He lost so much of the personality he had in the first movie and I think this movie and Bio Broly ruined people's perception of the character. The Family Kamehameha was cool but I always disliked how the messages conflicted between versions. It's a little annoying and the story lacked anything really substantial and the fight scenes did kind of exhaust me after awhile. I'd rather watch this than Bio Broly but just watch the first one or better yet DBS Broly. Broly had the personality of a brick in this film and it kinda makes the narrative of his character fall through.

I'll say this about Broly Second Coming, I like how they had Broly use his regular Super Saiyan from instead of just his Legendary Super Saiyan form for at least a good bit of the fight since in the first Broly movie he hardly used that form at all and almost immediately jumped straight to Legendary for the fight, which was something that always felt like a bit of a waste to me despite understanding why they likely chose to go straight to legendary since it's supposed to be this cool new unique form and all.

You have to remember that DBZ was at it's peak in popularity in Japan in the early-mid 90's, during the Android/Cell stuff. Toei was pumping out two DBZ films per year, one for a March release and one for July, to coincide with the semester breaks for schools. Story was...not their priority. Watching Tree of Might on Sci Fi channel in 1997 is a good childhood memory. I always saw it as the 3rd in a trilogy of movies with really great animation in the hand-to-hand fight sequences. Each movie after focused more on the special effects and flashiness (Revival of F had some great close-combat, though). Which is fine; that's kind of what DB became. Metal Cooler is an all-time great DB enemy design. Definitely disagree with most of your criticisms of the the movie but I won't lose sleep over it. As a kid I always loved Ryo Horikawa's performance and the sound of Cooler's limbs/circuitry regenerating.

8:24 IIRC Geekdom did either do a video about “False Super Saiyan” or mentioned it in his very old video talking about all Super Saiyan forms back in 2015. TL;DR version from what I remembered is that Toei wanted to use the Super Saiyan form in the movie but at that point Goku didn’t go Super Saiyan in the manga so they had to basically compromise and make a form based on what they thought Super Saiyan would look like. Don’t take my word 100%, but I do know Geekdom has definitely talked about False Super Saiyan before

Here's a real Hot Take... I actually think Second Coming is better than what most people give it credit for. Granted that you ignore the story, because not liking a non-canon movie because it lacks an emotional plot is like complaining that your side dish of fries aren't salted enough when you have a four course meal in front of you already. Non-canon movies are meant to be fun and balls-to-the-walls insane, not story-driven. That being said, here's why I think it's actually a good non-canon movie: - It gets to the action relatively quickly. About 15 minutes compared to the first Broly movie taking almost 35. - It takes place across a TON of different environments. The mountains outside the village, a frozen lake, an abandoned quarry, a lava river, a rocky mesa, and a waterfall. Compare that to the original movie's one grey destroyed city. - We see Broly's SSJ form, which we didn't see at all in the original. It really shows that Broly is a double threat of both speed and pure damage. - We see more of Broly's acrobatic moves, which separates him from the "fly, punch, kick" style almost everyone else has. - Family Kamehameha. Speaks for itself. - And like all DBZ movies, it ends with everything going back to normal, without shaking up the canon. Just thought I'd type this all out even though no one's going to see it. As other people have said before, you call this "Hot Takes", but don't really say anything outside of what everyone in the community has been saying about these movies for years.

The first 10 or so DBZ movies have a special place in my heart. My friend introduced them to me in the early 90s and that's how I fell in love with the characters. Then I went to Chinatown and systematically tracked down whatever episodes I could, which were mostly sold on 3rd/4th generation VHS tapes. I remember when it first aired on Sundays in 96. It was first time watching the episodes in chronological order. Funny enough getting the episodes started to become so much easier, once it was brought to the US.

Piccolo should still be able to hear Gohan's whistling even when ripping off his ears. Ripping off your outer ear doesn't make you deaf as what makes capable of hearing is inside your ear. The outer ear only acts as a sort of dish that makes it easier to pick up the sound around you, like an antenna. That's also why animals with longer ears hear better, because the length of their ears are able to pick up shorter wave lengths.

Sure that'd be fine, but making him a broody edgy character would've ruined him even more than he already was imo. What he needed was simply the opportunity to do and succeed in what Goku did instead. Him failing and being unsure and insecure in his abilities would be fine in the start, especially since it had been so long with prosperity and no troubly by then, so it would be easy to feel out of practice. But after that, he should've been the one figuring out that no one could beat Buu alone, the one focusing on training Goten and Trunks and teaching them how to fusion maybe from seeing Goku and Vegeta do it in the first place, so on and so forth... His story could've been going from a happy everyday life that left him unprepared, to having to deal with a hopeless situation while fighting his insecurity and lack of confidence in himself, and then succeeding by taking what he learned from his father but also understanding that this time, not one but everyone alive is needed to fight Buu together. If that wasn't the intention, Toryama should just not have set up Gohan the way he did

Okay dude, the reviews are super cool, I love your formats and your channel, there is one thing that I'd like to share with you here...Speaking about the Metal-Cooler movie's final sequence, you said that "Goku and Vegeta scream because plot holes" etc. ...but I actually find that scene very emblematic in terms of Dragon Ball cults. In fact, they've already wasted (supposedly) all their energy for the fight with the first Metal Cooler, and they now find themselves captured by the villan who then tries to drain every last beat of energy left - and actually does so. But then, all of a sudden, we are shown that Goku and Vegeta actually LET him do so, and keep willingly sharing their energy in order to break him down through overpowering. I actually like that they scream to do so and while trying to free themselves. Additionally, I love how Vegeta answers to Cooler's unbelievability attitude..."Don't you get it still ?! NOTHING for us is impossible!!!" It really seems to me like a well-delivered ending for the movie. That's all :)

With the introduction of and lead up to Goku's UI form in DBS, the part in Lord Slug where Goku goes pseudo-SSJ starts to make more sense. Not only was that part an unintended teaser for the SSJ form, it can also be viewed as Goku just beginning to tap the SSJ power hidden within him (much like Gohan's hidden power, so...like Father, like Son)!

3 months late, it is time for the history lesson that you did ask for, but didn't expect to get an essay on. Pseudo Super Saiyan in the Lord Slug Movie was created before the final Super Sayian design was finalized, as confirmed in Daizenshuu 7. The "upward hair" part of Super Sayian came from here specifically, but Toriyama added the gold color later for manga production reasons. (They wanted to save ink by not coloring in Goku's hair) The "rumor" that it was a movie error is in fact a quote from Daizenshuu 6, but Daizenshuu 7 effectively debunked the prior book.

Super Saiyan looked different in Lord Slug because the form hadn't been officially unveiled yet. The movie premiered in March 1991, while the chapter of the manga revealing the Super Saiyan form wasn't until the following April. At the time of Lord Slug's development, "Super Saiyan" was still just a concept or legend rather than an actual form.
