Time for Broly!
Last time I watched Fusion Reborn, Wrath of the Dragon, Cooler's Revenge and Bojack Unbound. I loved some and disliked others!
This week we are checking out Dead Zone, The World's Strongest, Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan and Path to Power.
These are some of the most beloved Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z films!

Woah woah you said broly barely has any lines in the first broly movie? thats the one he talks most and screams the least. Goku:hey how about giving us a handicap Broly:is that another word for coffin? Vegeta:I am the ruler of all saiyans even you broly Broly: Then please try your best to make me kneel before you The problem is he only speaks in oneliners after hes unleashed. broly movie 2 though is all screaming.

To be frank I don’t care about the anime industry being taken “seriously”, as long as what I’m watching is just fun or engaging! I just think these kind of puritanical hangups around such content, are an arbitrary hang up of our own Western Culture. I personally like the cheesecake fanservicey Bulma scenes, and I don’t think those forms of base entertainment, take away from the integrity of the rest of the films story and narrative! And plain and simple, there are plenty of anime to watch with leagues more fanservice and titilation, and plenty of series to watch that have not an ounce of that type of content, and at the end of the day what you want to watch is your choice. I just find it extremely obnoxious when people morally judge a work of fiction as inferior for having some quality they personally don’t like, or feel psychically embarrassed by some arbitrary aspect of the work based on what the feel others will think!

For me: from best to worst, Path to Power, World's Strongest, Dead Zone, Broly. I agree with everything you said about Path to Power. Worlds Strongest I mostly agree with, though honestly I forgot they explained Wheelo's motivations so much as you say, but I'll take your word for it. I still think it's in the top 3 best Z movies because the fights tell their own story. It's one thing to have good animation (which it has), but seeing the internal thoughts of the characters is equally important. Goku really sold the fight with Wheelo as something brutal and insurmountable, and in turn it makes Wheelo feel more interesting and intimidating (maybe more than he actually is). Also, Wheelo's funimation dub voice is outstanding. I'm a huge fan of the original DB and Dead Zone captures those feelings for me, but with concepts from Z which is a nice blend. I don't care much for Garlic Jr., but the lore is interesting and overall the characters just feel right and are written well, especially Kami. The plot I hardly gave any thought in this case, but I think good pacing and characters is more important regardless (which is also why I prefer Worlds Strongest over Wrath of the Dragon even though the latter technically has a better "plot"). I really don't care for the Z Broly movie. I get a kick out of Paragus's Shakespearean style of villainy with his long monologues, tragic irony, and dramatic movements, but otherwise the story is awful. The fights are neat, but I prefer the animation in Worlds Strongest or Cooler's Revenge and the choreography of Fusion Reborn, Bojack Unbound, or Return of Cooler anyways.

btw the reason the movies tend to feel like “extended episodes” is bc they were rlly just made to promote the series. They were shown at festivals/fairs among other anime films abt every year, which is also why they tend to be so short and borrow things from the main series. I know it doesn’t rlly affect their quality, but they are basically meant to be advertisements for DB, not proper movies

Honestly that's what I was going to say. The problem is that he's thinking of these as "MOVIES", feature length films with feature length film quality. But they aren't. They're more like short stories. And I think part of this is evident in the fact that most of these "movies" aren't even an hour long. Personally I think the best way to enjoy and judge these movies is to compare them more to each other than the actual movies or shows.

Mark, my guy, my fellow DB enthusiast, HOW OH HOW could you have possibly missed the deeper meaning behind Goku's anger at the end of "Path to Power"? That scene is the reason the movie is LEGENDARY. Goku stares upon the mangled lifeless (albeit robotic) body of Android 8, and after screaming his head off, says this line. "That's what really happened to you, right Grandpa? When you said you 'had to go'?" Goku's not just angry because his friend was killed. Goku is angry because he just discovered what 'death' is. When Goku is first introduced, he literally believes the 4 Star Dragon Ball 'is' his Grandfather, Gohan. In reality, Grandpa Gohan was killed by Goku's Great Ape transformation. Goku found Gohan nearly dead, and his last words to him was that he had to go but he'd always be with him in the 4-star Ball. Goku is dumb. he took that literally, which is why he didn't feel 'real' grief over his grandfather's death. Not until this exact moment. Goku blows away General Black with a Super Kamehameha, vowing to never allow him to do to anyone else what he did to "Eighter." But that's not enough to make Goku content. He still screams, still powers up, but unlike any other power up scene in the series, he is crying at the same time, all the while processing his newfound understanding of death and his newly discovered purpose of defending life. NOW, GRANTED, if the movie had cut to black and rolled credits right there, it would have been a master piece, but no, of course they have to use the dragon balls to bring Eighter back, and like, why wouldn't you, it's kind of cute, but I do admit that the very last scene undercuts the tragedy and gravitas of Goku's greatest Kamehameha. Mark. My youtube content creator that I watch from time to time, you are telling me you didn't process ANY of this during your viewership of the movie? Like, are you kidding me? Please rewatch the ending of the film if you think I'm crazy. Everything I laid out is there in that scene. This movie deserves better than "good animation, shit ending tho"

He didn't say it was bad or anything like that, he just said he wanted more of a reason for Goku and Android 8 to care about each other so much, and he justified by saying it was because Goku was still really innocent and Eighter never had a friend before, but yeah, he definitely missed that detail that it wasn't just because he had lost his friend but that he just found out what death actually was... only to then immediately realize it had no consequences whatsoever because DRAGON BALLS YAY!!!! I'm just saying, he didn't have nearly as much of a problem with this as you make it out to be.

broly has quite a lot of dialogue imo. after watching it over 10 times. He toys with his victims and plays this psychological game with them. like when hes looking at the little race of creatures enslaved on new planet vegeta and he says" oh look, the little slaves decide to be brave. i noticed that you love to look up in the sky at your silly old planet. i bet you wish you could go back there one day. but its all a dream! and then he goes to throw a ki blast into them and last second it curves to go and blow up their planet as they watch. and his remark is "oops, did i just blow it up?" followed by maniacal laughing as he takes pleasure in the destruction and mind games. or like the moment right after broly sends trunks into a cliffside and he turns to goku and says " kakarott? how much do you love your son?" striking genuine fear into goku making him yell for gohan to run before clashing into a test of strength with broly knowing he'd lose to buy gohan time because he knew what would happen otherwise. and i remember him calling goku by his name, goku. it only happens once but at least he does it. he talks way more than DBS broly did throughout the whole movie and i find his dialogue really builds hsi character, even though the motive may not be there i feel like its made up for in the same way a psych ward patient isnt expected to have a method to his madness or a reason for his actions. and theres this small hinting throughout the film that he has the same pride as vegeta as he calls out to goku " show me your fighting spirit or i will blow up this planet!" encouraging goku to fight him at full power like all saiyans crave. giving motivation to the fight in that he craves the passion of battle just as goku and vegeta do. also in the same way as my comparison to a psych ward patient i think by the flashbacks to his past he wasnt stable. he was uncontrollable and emotionally unstable. at any moment he would go berserk and thats why paragus had to control him in the first place. i think looking at it through this it shows more why goku crying may have had a lasting impact however i am in no way saying its a great motive for a plot. just how with whats presented in the film how it might make more sense. but at the end of the day an opinion is an opinion and to each their own. though maybe having a different pair of eyes to look at something through may allow you to see something you otherwise may have glossed over or didnt put together the first time.

He gives some really clever lines, shows absolute arrogance towards everyone who couldn't even scratch him, taunts Goku by attacking Gohan, blowing up parts of the planet, and even mocks Vegeta. The way I see Broly's character...is that he's nothing but a ruthless psychopath, victim of his own power. It is shown during flashbacks that Paragus can't hold him or supress that sadistic behavior during his childhood until the introduction of the tiara. Once you see it like that, there is no need to look for any justification in Broly's actions: he's always been mentally ill.

I've always felt one of the main reasons the first Broly movie is so memorable was the presentation of Broly himself. He's utterly unique in DB before Super. He's huge powerful and dangerous. He radiates sheer malicious joy while fighting. Even the way he moved in combat was incomparable to the rest of the series' villains, except maybe Buu. If his motivation wasn't breathtakingly stupid Broly would have been a fantastic villain..

My issue with this (and with Broly's issue with Goku in general) is how the fuck does Broly tie the name Kakarrot to *anything* ?? He was a fucking baby at the time! Was everyone just going around the pods talking about Bardock the brilliant scientist's kid on loop so much that the name just stuck in his infant subconscious...and talking about Kakarrot over the baby with a power level of 10 fucking thousand?! It'd be more believable that Broly heard his own name more as a baby and ended up getting triggered by someone saying Broly instead of Kakarrot.

You should look at the "Kakarot crying" thing as more of a thematic relationship: Goku, despite being a weak piece of shit with a PL of 3, was sent to Earth where he lived a good life, made friends, had a good adoptive father/grandpa and managed to become so strong by his own will. Broly, on the other hand, despite being a baby with a PL of 10.000 was rejected by society, stabbed, manipulated by his father, unable to control his powers or emotions, becoming a fucking monster. Also, a bit after Goku cried, Bolt got almost stabbed. Not a particularly good memory. But yeah, I do not think it's very intentional, and it's still dumb when the movie exposes it like that.

Honestly, the fan service in anime isn't the thing that's holding it back in the western market. Western media has plenty of fan service, even if you won't see it much in cartoons. People in the west (the ones that aren't familiar with anime) don't take it serious because they still see it through the lens of the Animation Age Ghetto. Then they see it as something weird and 'other'. I've seen people get massive cognitive dissonance after watching an innocent Ghibli film and react like they've just seen Bible Black. You can't blame that one on fan service.

It's the same kind of mentality that makes people think you're deranged because you like Urotsukidoji; they think anything sexualized in any way exists _only_ to titillate. In Urotsukidoji, it's instead used to horrify. In Dragonball, it's used for comedy. The only reason you'd call it "pedophilic" is because you either can't see it, or worse, it titillates _you_ and you're projecting. Or, y'know, it's just because for Americans all nudity is sexual.

If you start to think from another perspective, broly went through a lot as a kid, no even a baby just because he was the legendary super saiyan. He literally got stabbed through his belly and was left to die. Right after that he wanted to save his injured father and went beserk using his powers to survive a planet getting destroyed so he had to live in space with his dad alone. And because of his aggression and mental instability his dad controlls him and he becomes this quiet scared man child who doesnt want to upset his father and rarely has contact with others. The only thing in his life which he remembers and triggers him is goku so if you take these things into consideration then his character makes much more sense.

The idea behind Broly's motivation is that he isn't so much upset about Goku's crying in of itself, but that he perceives it making him weep all that time ago as him being dominated by what's supposed to be a weakling. They have these monitoring people off-screen being amused by how the super strong child is being made to look like a wimp at the cries of a low-class baby, and this is what seems to set Broly off. It's more or less Toei's attempt at framing Broly as another enemy Goku had quote, unquote "defeated" in the past and is looking to get back him when he comes back into his life. It's just a tad contrived because it's more of a forced metaphorical defeat when they were friggen babies rather than an actual defeat in combat.

This comment is really long so in case you’re lazy, so I’ll put a tldr, just don’t argue with me if you didn’t read the whole comment because I don’t feel like repeating what I already said. Tldr: Broly is a cool concept if you’re under the age of 10. He should have either have been motiveless and just insane or been angry at Vegeta, not Goku. He has way too much in his backstory for him clinging onto the memory of Goku crying to be what sets him off and even without all of his backstory, that’s just a stupid motivation regardless. I used to love DBZ Broly for the same reasons people do today. He’s a big strong guy. And that’s cool and all, but then I turned 12 and realized that his motive is just ridiculous. People come up with all types of theories on the true meaning behind it to justify the absurdity of it, but at the end of the day it just doesn’t make sense due to multiple points. Years later his motive became even less justifiable to me. He was stabbed and was on Vegeta when it blew up, but the crying is what gets him? Why? And how did he learn the name Kakarott? At best some passing saiyans mentioned it, but how often did that happen when 2 feet away was a baby with a power level of 10,000? Who the hell cared about the loud baby with a power level of 2 or something? But sure, someone said the name Kakarrot AND Broly connected that name to the crying infant AND remembered it all those years later. If he has that type of memory capacity as a baby, why not remember the face of the man who stabbed him and left him for dead, King Vegeta? He should have seen Vegeta the fifth’s face and gone apeshit right away. Instead, he SEES Goku, whose face he probably didn’t have much, if any chance to see and nearly loses it had it not been for the control device. And Vegeta exploding at best was a light show with his barrier blocking out the force of explosion and in theory the sound, but 17’s barriers let sound through so if we use those as reference, Broly at worst, heard the explosion of a planet from inside the damn explosion (and he and Paragus somehow didn’t go deaf.) If he couldn’t hear it, the destruction of his planet is basically irrelevant and this point can be thrown away. Up to you if you want to count it since it’s admittedly very vague. If he could hear it, the sound of that explosion was somehow less prominent and less traumatic than a baby crying for a while. What sucks is that for me is that Broly didn’t need a motive. He could have just been insane and I would have just been fine with him. But his motive is a key part of his character. It’s why he’s antagonist towards the protagonists and his power is tied directly to his anger and insanity, which is fueled by this desire to get revenge for his missed nap time. I can’t just ignore this aspect of his character because it’s half of his character and it’s stupid. It completely throws in the trash a cool concept. The concept alone was so cool that as a child I literally lied to myself and convinced me and my friends that we were all too stupid to understand the “greatness” of Broly because there simply wasn’t any way that the Legendary Super Saiyan was motivated by a crying infant. That would be stupid. So stupid that even a child would realize that it just makes no sense. Lastly, another solution besides making him just crazy and uncontrollable rather than being a grown man holding 30+ year old grudge from when he was fresh out the coochie, was shifting his motive towards Vegeta how I said earlier. Make him a character after revenge or retribution. Make Broly either have PTSD over the stabbing or just want vengeance, either works, and put the sins of King Vegeta on Prince Vegeta’s head.

Z-Broly is the perfect one-shot villain: an unstoppable, psychotic monster who just wrecks while looking like a total badass, but is still ultimately inconsequential to the main narrative of the series, and his one-note personality means he would be a poor arc villain. His motivation is a little silly but ultimately I find it better than nothing. Overall Z Broly is still a cool villain and I'm always happy to see (and play as) him in his various video game appearances. And as I'm 25 I think it's safe to say he doesn't just appeal to 10 year olds.

Pj Spirit eh I feel like you’re being a little too hard on it, like yeah you’re correct about most of what you said but I’ve never really felt like dragon ball was ever above something a 10 year old would enjoy. Like I would understand if this was hunter x hunter or full metal alchemist where character motivations and backstories are good and unique and also have a thematic purpose but it’s dragon ball where time travel, fusions and gods all exist and are introduced mid story to move the plot but as a dumb kid that’s why I like dragon ball
@pj_spirit
@pj_spirit 4 жыл бұрын
DarthWall275 I would have literally preferred nothing though, rather than what we got for his backstory. It would have sold his uncontrollable rampage even more, but now it’s more akin to a galaxy threatening temper tantrum. We’ve had antagonistic characters, villains or otherwise in DB before with no real backstory or reason to do what they did. Frieza, Hit, Cell, several RR Army commanders, Cooler and even Buu. Hell, Hirudegarn worked fantastically and it has absolutely no sentience. They all were great and we don’t know much of anything about them. But adding something stupid to the character that is half of the reason why he matters at all just ruins what could have been just fine on its own. It’d be one thing if it was played for a joke, but it’s really not. Regardless of whether or not he was a oneshot villain, he’s still ruined by his motivation. It’s just so distracting and completely detracts from the fact that he could be cool. That’s the worse part. He was soo close to staying this immutable badass but even a child could see what’s wrong about how he was written.
@pj_spirit
@pj_spirit 4 жыл бұрын
PRL 412 That hardly justifies anything though. He was a serious character and his backstory was presented as a serious thing to tell why this monstrous threat was out to kill everyone. It’s easier to swallow and way less distracting to literally not give him a motivation. It doesn’t matter that it isn’t as deep of a show or narrative, each aspect that you mentioned is presented and has been successful because it has been explained in such a way that it makes sense. Those worked as plot points because they were interesting ways to add elements in or to explain how/why something was happening. The fact that his backstory is neither a joke, nor does it makes sense is just stupid. It’s not only nonsensical as a backstory but it’s the laziest way to make him want to kill Goku specifically so that Goku can be the hero. And the thing is, you’re right, it doesn’t have to be deep or meaningful. But it shouldn’t be nonsense. The 2 solutions I provided weren’t deep or thematic either. They just made sense. That’s all I really would have wanted.

igor caique Ok first of all, I did watch the movie myself, multiple times, one of which was specifically to find out what his character actually entailed once I started questioning why Broly was so fixated on Goku. Second of all, I had my opinions on Broly before TFS made their parody so maybe don’t make assumptions about where I got my information from. Third of all, no, I’m not saying he went off as a teenager or blow up South Galaxy because of the word Kakarot. But Goku is the reason he goes off and breaks free of Paragus’ control on New Vegeta and he was specifically after Goku, though he did fight everyone else. Broly is never once before or after even implied to be able to sense power anyway, something that was alien to literally millions, if not billions of people out in space. He should have started losing it the second Goku got on the planet if that was the case. He only starts getting rowdy once he sees Goku in that hallway, which was a scene not in the TFS rendition by the way. In the TFS rendition he got mad from hearing the name, not seeing his face before calming down. The control device isn’t even in that parody and yet I made reference to it. Almost like I watched the damn movie before. And lastly, when the hell did I ever say that King Vegeta shouldn’t have stabbed him and left him for dead? When did I say he should have had someone else do it? When did I say it was beneath him as the king? Don’t put words in my mouth. I have literally no problem with that being part of the story. I do however have a problem with it being inconsequential to Broly himself. It matters to Paragus and no one else. But I will admit that I didn’t remember Paragus going on about destiny and saiyan instincts, that he just assumes mind you. I just don’t remember that. Thanks for bringing that to my attention but how about you don’t be a condescending asshole about it? I haven’t gone back to watch the story again in a while because I didn’t like Broly. Why the hell would I? So get off your high horse and don’t make baseless accusations about people and put words in their mouths.

I like the original Broly movie but my biggest problem with it (besides Broly's dumb motivation) is that you can remove the entire first half of the movie and it would not make any difference, in fact, you can remove every character that is not a Saiyan from the movie and it would actually be better, Roshi is one of my favorite characters of Dragon Ball, but his comedy in this movie is very out of place, the best example of this is the moment where Goku and Broly meet for the first time and it seems that Broly is about to lose control and Paragus struggles to control him, that was supposed to be a serious moment, but in the middle of the scene a drunk Roshi shows up complaining to Paragus that there are no restrooms in the planet and he wants to go away, another example if the very beggining where Paragus meets Vegeta and invites him to his new Planet Vegeta, that also should be a serious moment but while that's happening Krillin is singing some song in the background that adds absolutely nothing to the scene, it's not funny, just distracting and kinda annoying, and if you think about it, it's very possible that Broly's motivation on its own was also another bad joke, I mean, a baby crying next to him when he was a baby? How could anyone take that seriously, but even with that I still love this movie for its battles, and the moment Broly transforms for the first time is absolutely incredible.

Can it really be called a hot take when its an opinion is grounded in sound logic?

I absolutely LOVE the animation style of Dead Zone and The Worlds Strongest. Always been my favorite.

Man TFS' adaptation of DeadZone has made it sooo much better. Honestly one of my favourite TFS movies/special episodes.

Honestly I like these movies because I just view them as little “what-if?” Side stories where things don’t always have to make sense. I don’t hold them to the same standards I would the actual show, I just view these as nice little side things for you to watch and enjoy, not really full fledged films. I don’t judge them as critically as I would the show.

The funny part about the dead zone movie is that tfs even joked about the problems of the movie

I'm honestly so surprised History of Trunks doesn't ever seem to come up in the comments here or on twitter, at least from what I've seen. I always assumed it was one of the more popular ones, considering it's Future Trunks. It gives his SS transformation depth, and shows us the backstory that he just fucckin says in the anime.

The soundtrack from Broly is just awe-inspiring. It fits every scene perfectly and gives the movie an edge over all the other dbz movies, imo.

Nice to hear someone else who actually doesn't like Broly. I never much liked the dbz movies, but I thought path to power was pretty mind-blowing. Love your videos. Look forward to more movie reviews. Please do Return of Cooler!
