In the half hearted defense of the 'Backrooms were scarier before monsters' take, I think people are just more talking about the version that...lets be real kinda reads like a lesser SCP: multiple types of monsters, levels, factions and concepts explained to such a minute detail it stops feeling like a look into another world and more like a detailed guide for a videogame that doesn't exist. Monsters might have always been part of the equation, but the STALKER ahh faction system and the simulatenously unknowable yet extensively cathalogued cryptids there sure aren't.
@GregariousBant2 ай бұрын

I just in general disagree with the absolute disrespect to creators who have contributed to the backrooms. Just because Kane created something good doesn't mean that everything else doesn't have it's place or doesn't deserve respect. So many people just absolutely shit on what other people have made in some convoluted way to try and praise Kane. It's gross and unnecessary. You don't like it, that's okay, (not you in particular just to clarify) just don't participate. Let people have their fun. I genuinely appreciate this being brought up in the video because it has drastically decreased my ability to enjoy Kane's series knowing how people are weaponizing it to attack others. So much vitriol.

Okay, followup comment now that I'm done the ranking section of the video! In regards to your comment about the Mario 64 Personalization thing with Classified, I really really recommend playing B3313. It's a very, *very* extensive rom hack for Super Mario 64 that goes full ham on the idea of the beta versions of the game being utterly fucked. Even references Classified at a lot of points. I wouldn't recommend actually completing the game as it's so *much* and that's not the point. It's best just wandering about the labyrinthine and genuinely impressive castle dreamscape as if you were playing something like LSD Dream Emulator, or a Mario version of Yume Nikki. The vibes are immaculate.

Less related to any analog horror shenanigans and just a cool chill horror game with a bit of silliness to it, Voices of the Void is also worth checking out. @Fighter_Builder2 ай бұрын
AGREED! Honestly, I never really found B3313 scary, I always enjoyed it in the sense that it really felt like I was playing Super Mario 64 for the first time again, taking that confusing yet whimsical experience of playing through a game like SM64 when video games were still a relatively new concept to me and bringing it forward in time for me to experience again in a fresh new way. I've never played any other game quite like it. Also, playing it on a real CRT and real N64 controller is an absolute vibe. If you have the stuff to do that, I would highly recommend giving that a shot.

'Should I stream Shipwreck 64 .... and cry?' uh yes pls. We crave human suffering. Also, the plot of your analogue horror reminded me of a storyline of a game I just played (won't say which because spoilers), but the messenger was sent out to see if there was life outside of our own world, but she found the truth and drove herself mad trying not to tell her creator this truth. He finds out eventually, he goes mad, and this madness spiral of both characters spans literal millennia and almost causes the end of life as we knew it :) good times, but a slightly weird tangent for the game.

I think the main difference between the original Backrooms greentext and a lot of fan interpretations is that the focus is shifted. The original focused a lot more on the dread of being trapped there with the mention that you might not be alone. It's 95% trapped 5% monster. It was vague enough that you could easily see it as you would starve to death before you get out or get killed. Most other things you find is 95% monster 5% trapped. For a lot of interpretations (ESPECIALLY video games) it has just become an easy setting to put scary monsters.

The titanic reveal is even better because in the series lore it was said to have been scrapped and also it has the upgrades the Olympic recived later in its service after the real life titanic sank, including new name letters and more lifeboats, also its promenade deck seems to be open instead of closed. the almond water thing is so funny. its such a perfect example of people who have no understanding of implication or subtlety trying to expand of something into a universe that didnt need to be, because the original worked best as a stand alone product

I played Shipwrecked 64 at your recommendation, and I gotta say, I agree with a lot of your take - my only addendum is you underestimate how tedious it is LMAO You think it's bad as far as you got, hoo boy, the plaza level is some of the worst tedium I've ever endured in a horror game. That said, it was still worth playing and has a lot of cool stuff going on - great video, thanks for all the good content Scott!

Underrated analogue horror idea would be a therapist (like the "why tf is your imaginary friend split in half") desling with one or multiple people all desling with their own analogue horror issues that slowly but surely start to overlap (or like a police investigator, school councilor, etc.)
@Blaze-nm1uhАй бұрын
I mean, the idea of a therapist as the main pov character is kinda explored in children under the house, but considering I’m currently intending to get into that field, and I’m aware of how actually traumatic being a therapist can be, honestly it’s kinda tempting to work on myself.

Especially as someone who’s a big fan of Mario, I can definitely say that it was certainly effective, right through to the very satisfying finale! That was the best moment of this video for me. (I will admit it’s not perfect, but hey, it’s Mario 64 except it has a scene of Luigi drowning and reference to Stanley the Bugman!)

One thing I do like about Valle Verde is that if you pay attention you can tell what's going on, especially since the TH Brain Debrief document was released as a supplement to the videos. Basically it seems to be that a rudimentary AI peripheral for the PlayStation called the TH Brain was created with the intention of it being able to generate new video game content in real time. The TH Brain was going to learn by studying real human neuron communication, via some very unethical experimental brain surgery. Then the kids whose brains were hooked up to the TH Brain somehow got trapped in the machine, which was running an instance of Valle Verde to test the TH Brain. Now the TH Brain AI is essentially playing god with the world inside the game, literally styling itself in biblical trappings, trying to use the kids' brains to expand its own capabilities. And the footage we're seeing is from QA testers who are running tests on the TH Brain trying to figure out how to get the kids out of the system before the AI can kill them and assimilate their brains into it. Or at least that's what I THINK is happening because to your point, you can get like 80% of the way there if you're paying attention but there is still some logical leaps you have to make. I'm definitely excited to see where it goes.
@reidj22262 ай бұрын
I like how in your horror there wasn't much of bigger twist of some cosmic like dread i expected, it wasn't a "oooh big monster will destroy us" but more of a dread of how we as a humanity are literally told what's our problem is but will arrogantly say "bullshit" and lock away those who might help against the expected results. The final shot on humanity played exactly same way dead planets from Voyager 3 observations really sets the reality of the ending. I might liked it if there was some underlying bigger truth like government already knowing it or something like that but the whole interaction was cool regardless, voice actors did good. Something like "yeah we spied on your observations and knew exactly what's gonna happen if you'll gonna resign so this entire interview was a test to see if you're gonna be smart about it and keep your mouth shut or if we'll have to come to more cruel conclusion, unfortunately you picked the second." Although it brings me to question if analog horror implies someone watching it on analog tv with a tape or something, then what exactly would happen to us? I think it's really missed opportunity to add in that this whole thing is watched by the mentioned mental health psychiatrist and leaving an option for them to do something or just vainly stay silent in horror of it.

As someone who was there when Needlemouse was being released in real time, yeah the story fell apart as things went on, but I do think there were some interesting ideas that came about it, like changing the format from VHS to early 2000s Windows Moviemaker style videos and playing around with the supernatural element of the series, there were also some genuinely great art in those later episodes For anyone curious, the second season has one the son of one of Sarah's friends trapped in the game finding it while there's expositioning more about what truly happened when Sarah died and to her girlfriend at the time of her death, as it is eventually revealed that there are actually two supernatural beings in the CD, one being basically the .exe representing her hatred that has been manipulating Sarah into doing all of her evil shit (btw she kills the two teens that find the CD because fuck them kids) and a good one that is basically trying to free the spirits and move on to the afterlife, which is the ending of the series as all the spirits trapped escape, including Sarah, from the .exe's influence Oh and from memory Sarah was killed accidentally by Luther during a bar fight where everyone was too drunk, so yeah The main problem with season two is that it's both too dense and too little descriptive at points on what is actually happening, and sometimes there were also problems with the fact that audio was not subtitled, which made understanding some of the scenes with crunched voice acting a nightmare And yeah fuck whoever wrote the article for Sarah god I hate it, as far as I know Sarah's a full-blooded American girl, so I have no idea why she is described as Asian in the (likely vandalized) Wikia Thankfully ShutUpJojo has rebooted the entire Needlemouse universe with Speedduo64, which does deal with some of the issues from Needlemouse overall and I'd recommend keeping an eye on it

The analog horror you made at the end is so well done. Whoever you picked as the initial voice actor fit perfectly. Really reminded me of those documentary narrators from the ones we used to watch in school, or like those educational programs and shows. But really, all the voice actors did an amazing job. I was pulled into the story right away. That picture at the end really got to me. Great call back to the pictures throughout to show Earth isn't special.

Skipping over Blue Channel and its related video Deep Blue slightly miffed me. Gooseworx is a musician-animator, and Blue Channel was initially for the mostpart just music. Interestingly, Goose describes the videos as VHS tapes which kinda contradicts the idea of it being a channel. But Deep Blue explained through very quick messages and figures in the dark what the Blue Channel is. It's a gateway. Watching the Blue Channel tapes gives an opening for things from somewhere else to come through to out world. Thalasin may be one, but most things that pass through are living things. The blue channel may not be a tv channel but a different definition of channel. Either a connection of seas, or a way to channel these entities to us. Watching opens the path.
