The note about the abundance of celebrity “cameos” is actually a great one to point out; I genuinely don’t notice the product when there’s someone I recognize talking, which was immediately validated by Aubrey Plaza showing up and my eyes going from her, to the product, back to her and forgetting the product. Hadn’t considered that being one of the reasons I don’t remember ads anymore.

The 2018 Tide ads were hands down my favorite of all time. I was in college, soon to graduate, I’m a graphic design major, but obviously have an interest in marketing. When I saw those ads, I could not help but fall in love. The fact that they had me questioning if every ad was a ride ad was brilliant. Because they didn’t just do brand association. That stunt made you think of Tide every single time you saw any other brand. Because you had no idea if it was a true commercial or just another Tide ad. I went to class the next day, and my typography professor, who was a retired graphic designer that worked for an ad agency, spent the entire class talking about all of our favorite ads of the Super Bowl and I got him to give his take on the Tide ad campaign. Best class, and best Super Bowl, ever.

I remember the biggest advertisement in the superbowl when I was growing up being the Wasssuuup? Ad. You would think it’s kind of stupid funny at first , but actually it’s good on different levels too. On the surface it’s just friends calling each other saying what’s up in a funny way. Subconsciously you realize they’re having a little inside joke with each other and they’re all getting their buzz on with bud light. It’s relatable and easy for most people to imitate. While other Super Bowl ads might be spoofs of other media, the wassup ad was spoofed in scary movie. Personally I like it better than Dilly Dilly too, that’s just my opinion.

Modern advertising may be about "Be as annoying as possible in order to be remembered better", but I can't think of a single person that would watch an ad and NOT go out of their way to avoid that brand if they can due to how annoying their ad was (or hypocritical whenever it's an ad trying to pretend the company is eco-friendly or morally superior in some way).

This video has taught me something truly incredible - All the lame, unfunny shit my coworkers throughout the 2000s would reference all came from Super Bowl commercials apparently. Holy shit! I never knew!

genuinely can't believe you made this entire video without including the "i love bumblebee, bumblebee tuna" song that rocked the nation for months

You know I don't mean to shit-talk your degree by saying this but ads have a very antagonistic relationship with viewers in most cases. At best, they seek to take away your money, time, and attention. At worst, they seek to make you feel less than, inadequate and want to emphasize the thing about yourself you most despise. They make use of psychological tactics to target your weak spots. They cover city views with monuments to consumerism. I know it is a dramatic way to put things, but I think we all really need to put ads into context and maybe just maybe it can help alleviate the rampant consumerism plaguing us.
