For those of you who didn't grow up watching 90's PBS kids shows, the adaptation with the dog is from a show called "Wishbone". In the show, Wishbone was a dog with a love for classic literature. Each episode would start with a scenario in Wishbone's life that would remind him a classic story. Wishbone would then narrate said story, as well as star as one of the main characters. The show would flip back and forth between the happenings in Wishbone's life and the happenings in the book, showing the parallels between both stories. The show was meant to help kids develop a love for reading and to learn the life lessons that could be found in literature. I loved watching Wishbone as a kid and I'd say it is the reason why I got into reading classics books when I was old enough to comprehend them.

Just a side note; Wishbone also had a series of books that went along with the show, each featured book was abridged and sometimes certain words or phrases were changed to make them easier for kids to understand. Some thoughts: I was around during Lizzie Bennett Diaries and I can confirm the emersive experience was incredible. The characters would talk to each other on Twitter (there's a website that tracks all their interactions), Lydia has a channel too- where all "off screen" stuff relative to her happened... basically the fandom was searching the net for the next drop of hints. Like someone randomly searching Lydia's name would find her youtube and share it with the fandom. It was super organic. The week that Darcy showed up but like didn't show up (where we saw just his lower half) the fandom was losing it for a week. It was amazing and was never truly replicated despite people trying. also, you're too early Karolina! Netherfield Girls is coming to Netflix soon!!! You'll be short one.

Fun fact: My mom has a deep obsession with the Bride and Prejudice film that has lasted my entire life. Everyone in my house has seen it multiple times per month because she hasn't gotten tired of it. There's a Brazilian adaptation of P&P, it's a soap opera called Orgulho e Paixão (Pride and Passion) and it's SOMETHING. You'd think with all the extra time a whole soap opera gives you they'd go for a very slow burn but by episode 3 or something Elizabeth and Darcy were already going at it. A nice thing about that one is that all the sisters get to live their own stories, i.e, one of them frequently dressing up as a man so she can pilot motorcycles, or the other being a victim of a plot of her husband's governess to separate them by making them believe their house is haunted by his dead wife's spirit. Also, Lizzie's best friend is none other than Emma Woodhouse, the motorcycle sister is inspired by Marianne Dashwood from S&S and the haunted sister is of course Catherine Morland from Northanger Abbey. Oh, definitely the 1995 version for me. I agree that the weird 'floating Darcy' scenes have not aged spectacularly, but the casting is just so right, and so much of the script is straight from the book. Also, the horses involved are all appropriate for the time period and the people who own them (it drives me crackers in a lot of modern stuff when inexplicably there everyone is riding Friesians and Andalusians in times/places where that just isn't logical at all).

Only Brazilians may know this but we had a telenovela on 2018 that had the goal to adapt MOST OF Jane Austen's books (Sense & Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Lady Susan) AT ONCE, mixing the families in a way that all the book's protagonists were sisters. To make it more believable in a Brazilian setting, the story occurs in 1910s and it makes some adaptations to fit in this historical moment on Brazil. It's a crazy attempt and It is very competent (the cast of Elizabeth - "Elisabeta" in this version - and Darcy was chef's kiss). If someone became curious, it's name is "Orgulho e Paixão" (Pride and Passion, in english) and has 162 episodes in the local version which was cut to 100 in the internacional market...

It’s more of a loose adaptation, but I loved Austenland when I was a teenager. It’s filled with humor, the main character is a total nerd, the entire setting is cosplaying in historical dress (which given this channel, I imagine is appreciated) and even more funnily, the main character loves the story Pride and Prejudice, claims to be the biggest fan of Jane Austen, and yet she still falls into the romance pitfalls of the P&P story.

I grew up watching that one! I honestly feel that although it plays into a ton of 2000s rom com tropes, it's actually one of the better modern adaptations of the story. The writer(s) seemed to understand the source material better than a lot of the writers for these big-budget movies. My family always quotes "I do date. I do. Just all the wrong guys..." Such an iconic moment. The "multiply and replenish" line is probably the most iconic quote in the movie, though

Regarding The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, I think one of my favorite changes they made was to Lydia's story. It was the perfect way to adapt her conflict to the modern era, and they really fleshed out the character and make you care about her in a way I found it a little harder to do in the og story

Plus in Lydia's portion of vlogs we can see how manipulative and abusive Wickham actually is, how he drains all the life of Lydia, and makes her to film this tape "to prove that she loves him". Darcy manages to put the website down before the tape is released.

I saw the 1940 Garson-Olivier adaptation at a revival while I was in college, and was charmed by it. And then I actually read the book which I adored for all the reasons one would. Later, I worked for MGM for a number of years and learned several things about the film. It was filmed at the advent of WWII and because of the hostilities in Europe at the time, the studio abandoned plans to film in England. Cast and director changes also happened happened, and the budget was scaled downward once Olivier and Garson signed on. The studio saved $$ by using some of the extant costumes from Gone With The Wind which was filming concurrently. So, while it's not my favorite adaptation being a little over the top -- I'm one of the 1995 die hard fans -- it's a favorite for other reasons. My favorite Lizzy & Darcy are the 1995 version and my favorite Bingley & Jane are the 2005 adaptation. Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed your discussion, and I'm now going to find the Bollywood version as I've never seen it. Thanks for the recommendations.

The fact that the Wishbone episode "Furst Impressions" has aged like fine wine and is still as sobbingly funny as I remember from being a "PBS Kid" is truly satisfying. ❤️ Also now I've got the theme song stuck in my head so thanks for that. 😂 It's funny, I tend to like them in the order I saw them. I grew up watching the fluffy Greer Garson version so it's still a comfort movie, then when I was 12 the Epic 1995 version came out and it's one of the best memories, with my Mom rushing home to tape each episode. It definitely shaped the way I thought because I gagged all the way through the 2005 version ("what is this, a ROMANCE?!" - 22 year old me) and have only come to appreciate it as I've gotten older. Somewhere in between those two my Mom bought the "wobbly set" DVD set at Costco and I shamelessly love it- my brothers call the Darcy in that one "stick-up-bum Darcy" but I think that's one of the rare versions that shows how Elizabeth is in danger of becoming like her mother, then does even more changing than Mr Darcy. They also do an excellent job (IMHO) of showing Lizzy seeing the truth of what Darcy said of her family. The oldness of the sisters is cringe worthy for sure, but I'll always stan that version. 😂

Bride and Prejudice is excellent for getting very modern friends to understand the underlying issues and expectations that characters in historical movies are living with. Having the tropes of a historical story in the framework of a foreign culture (for Westerners) and culture clash helps people start to wrap their heads around the the historical restrictions and social norms of period stories. This adaptation also helps frame/make sense of the financial things that might seem odd to a modern viewer, such as the Bennetts being rich and having staff, but still worrying about money and the future and being portrayed as somewhat poor.

You missed one that came out this summer on Hulu! It’s a gay and diverse modern adaptation called Fire Island! Obviously that plus the fact that it only takes place on one island during one vacation means it’s not 100% faithful to the book and all the plot beats, and it will probably be pretty dated in ten or twenty years since it’s rooted in current American gay culture lol but I really liked it. There’s LOTS of class tension and chemistry and you can just tell Joel Kim Booster who wrote and stars in it loves the source material. Recommend!

The Keira Knightley version takes place in the late 1790s, which is when Austen first wrote her draft of what later became P&P (the original title was First Impressions which, if you look closely, is the title of the book Elizabeth is reading in the opening of the 2005 movie). And it's quite accurate to that period.

I remember a lecture on the Jane Auston novels (I mean, a lecture a week for one semester at uni), and the first thing our prof did was explain to us the situation of women in the time of Jane Austen - that they had to marry well or try and make an income with a very limited number of questionable "options" such as becoming a so-called "needlewoman" which was supposed to mean a kind of tailor but was really a euphemism for a prostitute. Considering all that, and the fact that the Bennet estate was entailed away, Mrs Bennet becomes a lot more sympathetic. I always disliked the way she's mercilessly made fun of in almost all adaptations, even my favourite (the 1995 one).

But even Jane Austen, with her very own familiarity with the situation of how woman of her time had little other options than to marry, is clearly putting forward Mrs Bennet as ridiculous in the text. While we can be sympathetic to Mrs Bennets worry, her behaviour is put forward in the book as constantly endangering her daughters opportunities to marry. She is making the very situation she fears worse. It is one of the key conflicts in the book. If you take away Mrs Bennet being a ludicrous person you take away one of the pillars the story is buildt on.

What am I going to do!" but does nothing that would actually lead to getting a job, and instead just makes a dramatic show of how unemployed they are all the time. That person isn't making up their problems, and a future reader could say "look at the 2022 economy, they really do need a job." But that doesn't mean they're going about things in a productive way. And if the POV character depended on them but the unemployed person just talked all the time about how this was a huge problem for them in particular, and no one had ever suffered the way they suffered, then they probably would come across as, at the very least, kind of annoying.

I feel there's also a larger discussion here, of how women are often quickly dismissed and/or perceived as silly in general (yes, even by other women; internalised misogyny is a thing) if they crack under the pressure of the awful and often impossible expectations placed on them, but that would be a subject for something more than a YT comment, lol.

It was easy to see why a perceptive person like Lizzy got him wrong. And the other characters were accurate as well. I particularly liked Mrs. Bennett, who for once was not overacted.

1980 doesn't try to make the Regency acceptable to our current tastes, so the period's prized calm elegance comes off as stiff. Yesssss!!! It's my *favorite* adaptation, followed closely by 1995. If I could mix elements of the '80 and '95 Lizzy and Darcy and put them in the 1980 adaptation, it would be 100% perfect for me. It's my favorite Mrs. Bennet because she's not obnoxiously loud and not embarrassing by today's standards, but has the manners of the time period and is embarrassing and ridiculous for the time period. I adoooooore Charlotte, and this Mr. Collins is a harmless bumbling dummy without being the awkward creep that he is in other adaptatios. And Moray Watson (Mr. Bennet) - I just love him cus I love him. He could have been a kinder or gentler Mr. Bennet, but other Mr. Bennets don't seem as tired of their Mrs. Bennets as I think he's supposed to be, so I still prefer the '80 Mr. Bennet to the rest. I do like David Rintoul. I use to feel like he was too serious and stern and cold, but I kept being struck by the first time we (the audience) see his smile. It would hit me like a arrow every time. And I realized that's surely exactly how Lizzy is supposed to have felt. Between that, his kind demeanor, his generosity (aaaaaand his stinkin' fabulous mansion 😂), it's no wonder she starts to reconsider. I'll shut up now. Lol

The "realistic family dynamic" in the 2005 version actually infuriates me. A key part of the story is that the Bennet family is not happy because the parents DO NOT respect or love each other. It's a major critique that Austen was trying to emphasize in this specific novel. Because Mr. Bennet has such a flippant and apathetic attitude he is just as much to blame for what happens to Lydia as Mrs. Bennet, who only views her daughters as extended versions of herself (like, I get that she's worried about their future but she's mostly worried about her own future). Lizzie says that she cannot marry someone she doesn't respect because she has daily proof of what happens when that is the case, which makes her romance with Darcy all the more deep and powerful because he EARNS her respect and love in the end. That's why I was so annoyed with the dynamic in the 2005 movie.

My gripe (which I learned and inherited from my high school English teacher) is that while the proposal in the rain is toe-curling in terms of romantic/sexual tension-it is antithetical to the spirit of the book. 1995 captures the awkwardness and abruptness of Darcy’s first proposal so well, and saves the sexual tension for more appropriate moments like when Lizzie arrives at Pemberly.

@@rachelschwartz3731 I agree. Darcy's speeches at the end (the "Mrs. Darcy" and the "body and soul" speeches) were so corny, contrived, and totally anti-Darcy AND anti-Austen. Austen was a satirist, not a romantic (though she does know how to write amazing romance tbf). Even with her more bold, charismatic, and smooth-talking characters (ayo Wentworth) she still squeezes in teasing remarks about their sappiness. If you read her earlier work, before her novels, she makes fun of corny romance tropes in a much more brutal fashion and it's hilarious! If they take out the comedy and the scathing social commentary, they take out Jane Austen. I bet she would loathe this movie. I'm not the type to really care about faithful adaptations (because written narrative doesn't always translate well to visual narrative) but I do get very touchy about Austen because she is so often misinterpreted. The social critique in her novels is so often passed over in favor of shallow romance. The thing is, the romances are more solid, meaningful, and deep if Austen's social commentary is kept in the story. They are barriers that the main characters need to overcome and grow from in order to solidify their connection. That's just plain ol' good storytelling and it shouldn't be dismissed as narrative fodder. The 2005 movie is fine, I guess. But I can only watch it as a period romance, not as a satire and definitely NOT as Austen story. Anyway, sorry I went on a tangent there lol! I just care way too much about Jane Austen! I totally agree that Firth's Darcy was the closest we've gotten to Austen's Darcy!

The book version of "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" follows the original story much more closely, because it is a remix of Austen's original words with modern additions. The plot makes more sense in the book; for the movie they added a lot of random zombie lore and stuff about Wickham that had nothing to do with either Austen's version or the "and Zombies" book.

You gotta watch "Fire Island," which came out this year! It's a gay adaptation, and I thought it was super interesting to see the class dynamics of the original adapted into the racial and socioeconomic dynamics of gay male culture. You can tell Joel Kim Booster is a legit Austen fan, especially with the "Bennetts." Margaret Cho is the lesbian den mother, Bowen Yang is the sweetest Jane ever. The Kitty and Lydia roles are the friends who get a bit too sloppy at the party, the Mary role is the responsible, socially conscious friend. Booster himself as the Lizzie I think is willing to be even harsher on his own character than most adaptations are on Lizzie, and at the same time you really feel his affection for his found family and the fierce protectiveness he has for them. I think it starts a bit stilted, but I ended up really loving it by the end. Not quite "Clueless"-level modern Austen adaptation, but better than any recent P&P for sure.

I didn't like Fire Island. They skated by on the gay angle and the writing felt appropriated and awful. I know I'm not in the majority in this, but it wasn't my thing. Terrible adaptation. I'll watch the zombie one or Bride and Prejudice as often as they're on but Fire Island meh.

This is possibly my favorite modern adaptation. Either that or Bride and Prejudice. As people have mentioned it does have some pacing issues but it was originally going to be a Quibi show and they just kept the scrip the same as if the episodes were now missing.

You're 100% correct, the lizzie bennet diaries were AWESOME to watch while it was originally airing, especially with all the trans-media stuff. I remember me and my Tumblr girlies would obsess daily over the characters' social media profiles, looking for new lore or even interacting with "them". The countdown for Lydia's tape was SO INTENSE. Aaah yes, you included Bride and Prejudice! I have to confess, it's pretty much the only adaptation I've watch and I've seen it at least 15 times cause it's one of the few DVDs I own. I know the songs by heart and one of my favorite moments is when the random choir members pop out of the ocean while vocalizing like angels and it's supposed to be the most romantic scene. The 1995 BBC version is hands down my favorite! My favorite thing to do is have a P&PPP (Pride & Prejudice Pajama Party) where I invite friends and we stay up all night watching it. 😀

I loved the 1995 version as it's the one I grew up with. It's so long but I've still seen it so many times. I loved Lizzie's smugness, and it's the only adaptation I feel that really shows just how smart she is, and that Darcy was perfect for her as they aren't openly romantic towards each other. But it was always lacking passion. So I think I've come to prefer the Kiera one because it's just so beautiful to watch and the attraction between them is so obvious. For some reason I always think of the scene where she realises that her friendship with Charlotte will never be the same, and I've come to interpret that part as her realising she wants love as much as she sort of pretends she doesn't. PS your British accent is top notch

One thing that was amazing with the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, was the excitement of wondering how they were going to adapt the dynamics and stories and make it contemporary, but also keep what Jane Austen wanted to convey. I remember being riveted by the adaptation of Lydia's "elopement". In 2012, sure your parents would be disappointed if you married some dude in Vegas, but it's not going to ruin your life (well, not to the extent it would have in the rengency era). So deciding to switch it to the real problem of leaked n*des and tapes was very clever. It was also quite horrifying as a viewer, because most of us perfectly understood what it meant, and there was actually a website that had been created with a countdown to the leaking, that coincided with the episode it was supposed to happen, plus all the character's twitter accounts that were messaging it each other to try and stop it. That show is definitely my favorite adaptation, and to this day I still follow the cast in their productions.

I recently saw an outdoor theatre group perform P&P (except typical Scotland, it ended up being indoors) and they also ditched Kitty and had the same actor playing both Mr Bennett and Mr Darcy, which is to say, it was slightly creepy. (Bonus contribution: the Jane actress from 1995 is the daughter of the Jane actress in the 60s version)

I remember howling with laughter at the Kahliwood scene, first time I saw it. And the Mormon version, its really cute if you think of it as some teen Austen fan’s adaptation that someone gave money to make. Sophisticated and riveting… no, but I like to imagine it was a labor of love.

I'm so glad you brought up the Wishbone episode of Pride and Prejudice! The Keira Knightley version is my favorite. I disagree about Wickham and most of the other sisters, except Mary. She really wasn't uptight or awkward enough for the role. I love that this is also the first version that I ever saw where Jane was arguably the prettiest sister. The other adaptations clearly have Lizzie as the prettiest, even though that doesn't follow the story (or the dialogue). One of the things I found interesting about the 1995 version is that it clearly follows the female gaze. The director wanted some eye candy, so she has all those random scenes of Darcy bathing, coming out of lakes, etc. Forget the fact that a man shouldn't even be seen by a lady without his jacket on, let's just release a wild, naked Darcy!

You've gotta love Wishbone! For context: The whole show's premise is that kids should enjoy classic literature. The unique quirk was that the narrator (a dog) casts himself as one of the main characters in his retellings, which are directly tied to a plight someone in the town is facing. So, take the Halloween episode for example: Wishbone's owner was afraid of the local abandoned 'haunted' house. Wishbone then, in an aside, tells the story of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow to the audience. Jumping back to the owner, he learns that the "ghost" was actually the school bully playing pranks on trick-or-treaters or whatever, and realizes that "actually, the house isn't that scary after all". Que spooky 'ghost sounds' from the house once everyone has left.

1995 is my favorite, probably because it's the first one I saw. I've seen and read a lot of different versions of P&P and I love them all. I do have some problems with 2005, not because of the actual movie, which from what I remember is beautifully shot, but I had such an intensely uncomfortable theater experience, that I haven't been able to watch it since. I read a lot of P&P retellings, my recent favorite of which is Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev, which is a modern, BIPOC, gender-swapped retelling where the Bennet family is Indian American and rich, the Lizzie character is a brain surgeon at Stanford, and the Darcy character is an unemployed chef from London whose sister has a brain tumor. It's fantastic.

I liked "Lost in Austen"... precisely because it starts as a nerdy dream of any P&P fan and turns into a horrible nightmare because everything compleeeeeetely goes down the hill because of her. And suddently, the well known story has become completely crazy with unhinged twists and one wonders how everything will be bent right again. I thought it was really funny... especially as I did not expect all the new events and also because, in the end, everything ends in the right way. : ) But yes, the haircut anoyed me all along. However... I watched it several times and always had my fun. ^^

Dame Queen Emma Thompson was on point when she said that the Jane Austen Society is a militant wing and that someone stopped talking to her mid-conversation because she omitted a character in ‘Sense and Sensibility’. I mean, there’s a reason why there are trust issues and writers are pathetic at writing 3 dimensional characters who happen to be fans of something. (Exceptions are there)

I read somewhere that the 1940 version of P&P was set in that specific era was because they had almost no costuming budget, so they had to reuse the costuming used in Gone with the wind. So, it was not only reminiscent of that movie, they were actually the very same dresses used in that prior film :)
