I watched Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood for the first time.

For 2024, I'm trying to watch at least one new anime per month. The first one was Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood! Here is a quick review.

One of the reason it is so highly rated isn't necessarily because it excels in a certain aspect, but that it manages to not fail in any. It sidesteps so many of the common anime pitfalls and concluded without any major issues while maintaining great pacing. There are no doubt many anime that surpasses it in a particular category or two, but they then turn around and fail spectacularly in another. It's really rare to find an anime that is so "stable" that avoids most of the common "turn offs", making it one of the safest recommendations to new anime viewers.

the reason you didn't connect with Ed that much and why you didn't like it at first is probably the same: since FMAB is a reboot and FMA aired not that long ago before it was made, they rushed through the start of it. A lot of character interactions got cut because they were seen in animation not that long ago and so they focused only on the necessary bits to get to the anticipated story parts that weren't shown in the '03 version. So poor Ed didn't have time to endear himself to you and show how awesome he is while everyone who has seen '03 before already knew and liked him and that carried over. '03 has a better character introduction and Brotherhood has the better story overall. That is also the reason why I think it is hard to reccomend this anime. Ideally one would watch the start of FMA '03 and then switch over to FMABrotherhood but there is no ideal place to do so :/
