In this anime feature, 13-year-old Kiki moves to a seaside town with her talking cat, Jiji, to spend a year alone, in accordance with her village's tradition for witches in training. After learning to control her broomstick, Kiki sets up a flying courier service and soon becomes a fixture in the community. But when the insecure young witch begins questioning herself and loses her magic abilities, she must overcome her self-doubt to get her powers back.

to answer your question about jiji: in the original Japanese and in this newer release of the film, kiki wouldn't be able to understand jiji anymore as a representation of her losing a little something in growing up. but in the first English dub, they changed that ending and had phil hartman voice as if kiki could hear jiji speak again. :)

I had the original VHS version of this movie and I watched it so many times i memorized the opening song and all of Jijis parts, then I watched it when I was older and it was the new english dubbed. I was horrified when the song changed and most of Jijis lines were gone, my heart broke a little lol. So I went out and bought the original dubbed version and own that now XD

Unlike the english version the swedish version only been one version and it's faithful to the original except the lines were translated from the english dub such as Osono offers Kiki chocolate instead of coffee and Jiji saying "Don't look now but there's a plane underneath us.", so Jiji doesn't speak at the end unlike the first version of the english dub.

This is my most beloved Ghibli movie! It's so heartwarming and... realistic? Even if the MC is a witch-girl... But the feelings she's going through - they are all too real and understandable... And other characters are also great! I don't know, I just like this movie with all my heart! And OST also is amazing!

Both are right, Ghibli is Italian and pronounced with a hard G. The studio/Miyazaki uses the soft G/J, just as a stylistic choice.

This was the first studio Ghibli film I ever saw having owned it on vhs as a kid and I’ve rewatched it many times. This, like some of the other Ghibli movies, is based on a book(series of books) though it varies a good bit from the source material. While losing her ability to fly was due to stress & burnout the reason she wasn’t able to recover her ability to speak to Jiji is said to be symbolic of her growing up. It’s believed he represented her childish side.

As a practitioner, I love this film. So rare to see witches in a POSITIVE and more realistic version of witches. Sadly, they still depict witches flying backwards on their brooms

This was my First Studio Ghilbi and Anime film i ever watched when i was 6 in 1998. Love Kirsten Dunst as Kiki, Mathew Lawrence as Tombo and Phil Hartman (RIP) as Jiji. Wish this on had "Soaring" and "I'm Gonna Fly" by Sidney Forest. Haven't saw the film in years tho but definitely going to rewatch it ^^

I prefer the Disney version over the re release. It has an amazing soundtrack and the end song I’m Gonna Fly is my favorite. Plus Jiji was even more silly. For example when Kiki asked to turn the radio on Jiji says “oh great now I’m suddenly the flying attendant”. 😅 “A Town with an ocean view” is my favorite score from this film. 😊

This is my FAVORITE studio ghibli movie. It came out on VHS in English in 1998 or something. We watched it ALL THE TIME. Personally (since I grew up with it) I prefer the VHS version. The music was different and there were a couple changes in the dialogue compared to this one. In the VHS one, Gigi can talk at the end. I don’t know how it is in the original Japanese dub. Something about this movie is just really whimsical and inspirational. But could also be because I’m an artist and I love creating and thinking about starting businesses and stuff. Great great movie.

Just as a heads up, the reason why sometimes Studio Ghibli movies tend to end without being fully wrapped up in a tight little bow is because they like to capture the beauty of life, even in it's monotony. In life, you come across many stories you never learn the end of as we are just people passing each other. Just like we might not ever learn the end of the stories of those around us, we may never know the end of these stories either. It's poetic.

I like how they kept Jiji from talking at the end, which an earlier dub botched. Things don't last forever or come back IRL, and that's a vital part of good storytelling i think.

This is a truly good classic for me, I grew up watching this. and also, there is a second movie squeal to this movie that I didn't know existed until a few days ago. It's called Lucia's enchanted stitching. Okay, after looking into it, I got April fools played with that. It was a joke there is not a second movie.

This question has been answered already but I will anyways. I used to watched this movie on VHS so many time and in the end she could understand Jiji. They changed a lot in the remake and deleted so many parts that Phil Hartman voiced. But over all this movie is amazing!!! Me and my kids love it so much we even named our dog Kiki.

This is by far my favorite Ghibli film. It’s such a spectacular movie. Highly recommend Porco Rosso, Castle in the Sky and Grave of the Fireflies. Those movies are also very good.

Mei and The Kittenbus is only shown at like The Ghibli Museum in Japan. It's not allowed to be shown outside of it. There was a video of it on KZbin years ago that someone managed to film when they were in there but it got taken down. But yeah Ghibli just does nice complete single stories is all. With how Miyazaki is he's one that isn't gonna just stay on one thing. The longest thing he ever did was the manga of Nausicaa which took like over a decade to make. Do have to say it's nice that you get to see the subtitles for the actual Japanese script, but it also is kind of...weird sometimes as it shows that they completely change what some of the characters are talking about at times in the English version. Not as bad as other Japanese-to-English pieces, but still, kinda makes me just wanna pay attention to the subtitles is all to get the "real" version of what's being said.

Yeah!!! The original English dub release was different. The music and voice dubbing changed at some point. When I saw this movie the first time, Jiji jumped up on her shoulder at the end and said "Meow" but it was Phill Heartman's voice, singing it mockingly. I miss the music too. The score is the same (Which I love) but the other songs with vocals. Still a favorite, 30 yrs later.

I still have my original Disney VHS of this movie, and this was the very first Studio Ghibli film I ever watched. When I grew up and saw the newer 2010 Disney English dub though, I was so distressed at all the changes (at this point I hadn’t realized they had changed anything until I bought this 2010 version) that I went and bought the 2003 DVD that retains the original VHS Disney version. Even watching the original 1989 Japanese version is difficult, simply because I didn’t grow up with it, so I wasn’t used to it.

I think it's the second Ghibli movie I saw as a little girl (I even was close to Kiki's age) but I alreadu k ew Kiki was a witch because the title in french is " Kiki the little witch " If I'm not wrong, a witch is supposed to developped specialities in something and when she goes to her training, she has to use her abilities for a living, like Kiki's mom with the potions and the other witch with astrology. I read on a site than Tombo was fascinated by Kiki and her ability to fly because his own grandma was a witch herself

Cats can eat oatmeal provided it's made with water and not milk (cats can't drink milk or eat dairy products, they're lactose intolerant, they can get diarrhea amongst other problems if they consume it), though not all the time, same goes with certain fruits and vegetables, like bananas and berries like strawberries and raspberries. Give them those stuff with moderation and not in lieu of cat food, treat it as a treat for them.

If I could like this a hundred times, I would. Grew up watching this movie, always wanting to be a witch (and I definitely dabble 🐈‍⬛) and Studio Ghibli has some of the most amazing and important movies to me. The original English dub Jiji got his voice back. It a bit of a story but basically when Ghibli sighed a contract with Disney for dubbing and distribution, Miyazaki told them they were only allowed to dub but not change anything about the films. Well Disney wasn’t down with that and technically violated the contract by adding new music and dialogue to characters in various films. Recently Gkids, a subsidiary of Disney took over the contract and re edited the films to original context. As someone who grew up with the original dubs, it’s kinda disappointing, especially with Castle in the Sky! I liked the added personality of Dola. And before people come at me with the “this is why you watch sub,” I’m dyslexic and cant read fast enough or pay attention to the film at the same time. I miss a lot of dialogue when I read sub and only get the gist of what’s happening. And contrary to popular belief, many people with dyslexia can spell 🙄

I think it's not so much that people don't know about witches as that they're rare. Probably only one born in tens of thousands of people. So if a witch hasn't lived in that city for a while, it wouldn't be fresh on their minds, especially if the customs and traditions aren't widely publicized. Think of it kinda like the Amish, you know of them and a bit of their chosen lifestyle, but certainly not the specifics and you aren't going to think of them on a daily basis because it doesn't figure into your day to day.

I think she didn't like Tombo because in the 1800s, it was rude to talk to a lady casually before you were introduced to her by someone she already knew. It was like saying she was a loose woman. In the early 1900s (this movie's setting), that tradition started to wear off because, of course, it's extremely impractical.
