Glad you gave the show another chance and that you enjoyed the second season! I hope the "second season second season" is up to the same standard, or exceeded. A lot of the points you make are understandable, even if I disagree with a few, but it is nice to see an unbiased opinion and review on shows like these. I apologise for the angry fans in your comments, most the fandom is chill I promise 😭🙏

2:45 So your first point here i dont really understand. Something that makes the world of Re:Zero so good is its mysteries. Whats the point of having a mystery introduced and then have it resolved in the same episode? No, each arc comes up with a set of mysteries that through multiple regressions Subaru will solve. Whats interesting is the interplay between the current arcs problem and how it affects/is affecting Subaru's current character. Its why the looping system (with the taboo an miasma) is so good. In that vein, s2 solved alot of s1's mysteries, but also introduced even more. Thats how overarching narratives are set out and instant gratification goes against that. 3:20 I see nothing about the introduction of s2 characters and s1 characters that would lead to this opinion. Especially when you say "meet the characters that we've talked so much about?" We've never heard of Garfiel, Frederica, Regulus, Ley, Ryuzu, or any of the witches apart from Satella so i dont get it. Every arc season 1 introduced more characters that also broadened the world: The oni village, demi-human racism, spirits and great spirits, the witch, poverty gap in the capital, court mages, magic system, curse users, royal knights, great mabeast, witch cult archbishop, Od, the divine dragon, sword saints, death of the royal family and royal selection, half the world being lost and probably more. 4:00 Re:Zero was always a Dark Fantasy mystery. Arc 2 was the most murder mystery arc of the series. Everything said here can go for season 1. Narratively, Subaru struggles because of a lack of power yes, but not only that, he is also punished mainly for his lack of understanding and his own personal failures. Arc 1: he thinks hes the main character and assumes he inderstands all the tropes and is the chosen one -gets gutted. Doesnt understand his looping, makes a mistake and gets gutted. Learns to actually pay attention to his surroundings, throw away his pride and make a plan that accounts for his own lack of strength? Succeeds. Every arc has a structure that encourages Subaru to learn from each experience. Arc 2: tries to figure out why he died in his sleep gets mysteriously killed, finds killer (we are introduced to more rules like miasma and witch lore) tortured and killed, tries to reach out for help but ends up lashing out and retreating in on himself leading to a greater lack of understanding between different poeple -hardens his resolve by understanding that they are good poeple deep down. Notice how the successful loop is the one with him crying on Emilias lap, not bottling up his feelings but showing his vulnerabilities. A lack of power was never the direct issue here. It was about trust, belief, and growth. Not even mentioning the way this all reflects on Rem. Arc 3 is all this taken to the extreme. In some ways s2 should take this criticism harsher because it has equally if not more batshit insane things that he could have never even tried to plan around. You said not everything was spelt out for you in s2 but in your last video you specifically complained about showing and not telling. 5:50 I find this insane becuase bar Echidna and Satella none of the witches have anywhere close to the same depth of character as Subaru, Roswaal, Beatrice, Emilia, Rem, Otto, Garfiel, Ram and so many others. You act like instantly getting everything about what the witches are like in a single interaction is a good thing but imagine trying to do that for someone like Roswaal. Your praise of their contradictory actions and personalities is because of the expectations and mysteries set up in the first season. 6:30 Your praise of the worldbuilding is nice though but again its a MYSTERY. Of course you might be confused, not every question is answered. 7:30 Lot i could say about this but ill wait for you to finish cour 2. Just because Emilia isnt fighting doesnt mean she hasnt helped. At least you actually like Subaru, i dont know how you can watch episode 7 and 18 onwards and not want to root for him. Though really i have to say that most of our characters arent weak..? I mean Emilia soloed Betelgues, Garfiel is shown to be strong, Roswaal is Roswaal, Puck is a great spirit, Rem's an Oni, Beatrice defends Subaru against Roswaal and Ram. Overall, you definetely explained your points much better than the first video and im glad you enjoyed this season.
@kamalululu4 ай бұрын
You articulated your points wonderfully and I saw where I may have failed to explain myself. Instead I decided to use humor(which can sometimes not land). So since you were so sincere in answering I'll be sincere in having a dialogue with you. 1. You kind of hit the nail on the head when you expressed the way S2 solved mysteries and added more. Im an avid reader. The best mysteries are able to give you a trail, filled with tiny mysteries that get solved along the way. But the big questions the big mystery still hang on the horizon and before you know it you searching for that big mystery and the tiny victories help but dont satisfy your thirst for that prize. Maybe this is just how I am, it felt as thought S1 lacked a lot of that. I didnt feel much closer to the story. I just didnt, that 100% can be my biases that 100% can be my own failures because I came into this anime knowing I wouldn't like it. Ive admitted Re:zero is not the anime for me. BUT I can always acknowledge re:zero is something good, (there are very few anime the world likes and I know for a fact is absolutely garbage)(ill make a video on those anime one day lol) I think instant gratification isnt that worst thing for an anime, unfortunately. I do like the Carrot and the stick. Especially when you are trying to sell me on a protagonist that is canonically weak.(this is a bias) 2. Meet the characters was articulated wrong, but I thought maybe somebody would understand what I meant. I think in the first season, there was very few characters we actually met. I felt as though the second season I saw pieces of characters that gave me something even though nothing was revealed. Betty for example, S2-1 she was a character shrouded with mystery but we got pieces of her then got more understandings of her. I think those reveals absolutely shocked me. That was expertly done by those that made those episodes because, I was actually surprised. RE:zero has a storytelling where it withholds information and I personally dont like how it will keeps things out of sight out of mind until its used randomly. Re:zero first season did that a lot. This storytelling happens a lot in video games, withholding pieces until you actually explore it or Subaru finally thinks of it. Which makes Subaru a main character but I think a better scope and what made me like S2 was we almost zoomed out and saw different pushes from different places and it felt as though now im witnessing the anime come into its own. It just felt like a show to watch, again just my biases. 3. This is preference for me again. When you showcase to me a main character, you are telling me this story is happening to him, for him, with him. He is integral to the story. Often times, I dislike how S1 framed Subaru then punished him for the very framing. Now a lot of what you said was true. But it feels as though it wanted to congratulate a story for kicking the crap out of its character. You can beat up on your characters, but being unable to give the character a reasonable out or a path to follow besides asking for help. S2 got away from kicking the crpa out of Subaru and more unexpected things happened. He survived and had to think and had to plan and had to process information and go ask questions (the moments with him and roswaal, was a highlight) I think there's a gentle balance of being able to introduce(tell you about the world), and then lead with showings. Re:zero 100% could restructure S1 better. S1 didnt do a lot of what was beautifully orchestrated in S2 a lot of favors. If anything it set up more of an uphill battle especially for somebody who didnt like it. 4. 100% going to praise the witches interactions because key pieces of information locked in and made the interactions worth while. Subaru looked waaaay better this season for me. S1 did one thing I liked genuinely 1 thing, it haphazardly let me know there is more to this world and more aspects waiting for me if I just held on and got through it. And I was rewarded for this. But I can admit, I didnt like the journey. Subaru is not bad because of who he is. He is bad because they will give me all these great moments of depth. But there is no growth outside of a quick wit that.(which is nice, but again my bias is I want outward physical growth. or the lessening of his curse. Do you know how different or interesting the story would be if along with the emotional growth. We see an unlocking of Subaru, physically). Im not saying he be powerful, im saying he can now run and the world can be harsher. and the challenges can test him even harder. This growing tension can 100 be written and has been written before.(this is my bias again and just how I feel, with the potential of this show and the possiblitites). 5. I just think there could've been a better way of giving us the mystery. Just different packaging on the gift that is Re:zero. 6. Thank you for watching and speaking to me. I'll take all of this into my discussion about the second cour. it'll probably be after next weeks video. Thank you for your patiences and hopefully I see you commenting in my next videos. im excited for the story to unfold, I genuinely have a bias against weak main characters that written to be weak. There just isn a functional reason why Subaru has to be landlocked in weakness.(to my biases) Take care and be well.

@@kamalululu i am just gonna comment on the last bit you said, "There just isn't a functional reason why Subaru has to be landlocked in weakness.", part of the story is about a weak/normal character surmounting insurmountable odds, and with enough effort/determination anything can be achieved. him being weaker than everyone does have a purpose and message

@@kamalululu I think i have a better understanding on your personal peeferences in regards to the shown now as well as how some things that i might find really enjoyable that you might find only really drags it down, such as the inherint powerlessness of Subaru's character (which can feel unrewarding compared to the suffering he goes through) or the rather relaxed method of worldbuilding in season 1. Sorry if i came off a little harsh in my first comment. I am very passionate about this series and I'll be looking forward to your video on cour 2.

I think your actual problem is with the time spent per volume in the anine, people always try to mix it up with a load of cut content you can recite off of fan sites but obviously four anime episodes spent on one volume is far bettef than two where you read around the gaps off of a website. Season 1 maybe sold you it wrong because it spent episodes 1-11 on volumes 1-3, then sped through 4-two thirds of the way into 9 in episodes 12-25 so almost twice the volumes in just over the same amount of time. I don't care as much about cut content spoiling things because the problem isn't cut content but the sum of its parts giving people a strange impression of the series. Season 2 covered the end of volume 9-15 in 25 episodes ie just over 6 volumes, that's a big reason why it felt different. Episodes were even longer than season 1 too so it had a massive effect. Even with the cut content criticised in season 2 that still has a much more similar feel to the novels so it's not as big an issue.

Did you just say to skip the the first season? I get that you had a hard time understanding the plot, characters, depth, connection, mystery and etc but by saying that you should just skip the first season shows that you didn’t actually watch it. Did you not see Subaru’s speech in ep 18 or episode 13 because with season 2 you are able to better understand Subaru’s character and why he acted the way he did. How about rem, the character who is probably the most connected with Subaru in the first season, they’re interactions built up to the first season 2 ep1’s twist and shock but you ignored that completely. So I hope you try rewatching the 1st season after finishing the second and maybe you can better understand the characters and plot. I’m glad you are finding season 2 a lot more interesting but still a great video and I hope you keep it up.

lol I was 100% being facetious. I didnt ignore it, just liked S2 almost leagues more than S1. I think the way episodes were directed in S2 is so different than S1. Just some constructive criticism, since I’ve noticed this in your other re zero video too which has kiiiinda turned me off of watching your other videos even tho I totally agree with some of them (dunmeshi awesome, blue exorcist manga good but s3 bad, etc.): You spend too much time rambling. Rather than saying part 1 of s2, you spent 30 seconds trying to say s1 of s2 or something. It’s hard to understand what you even mean, and it goes on far too long. You talk about the show going “over and over”, but you also do the same thing and the reason the s1 video “went over people’s heads” was cuz a lot of the things in the show “went over your head” cuz you were clearly misrepresenting it.

I agree s2 is better, but I think a lot of it is partially due to your difficulty understanding s1. Since some of the issues you had in s1 still exist in s2. Like the copious looping. And without s1, s2 wouldn’t hit. Or maybe I just found your s1 video so horribly written that it just portrays your understanding of re zero’s s1 as non existent.
