During the fight choreography between Wenwu and Shang-Chi, Wenwu tends to wear the rings whereas Shang-Chi fights with the rings floating around him. Wenwu usually has the rings return to him because his character has a harder time letting things go, and so his fighting style reflects that. Shang-Chi, on the other hand, has the rings float around him for the majority of the fight and they become multiple extensions to his own flow based fighting style. Shang-Chi tends to fight using his environment (established during the movies previous fights), so it makes sense for the rings to float around him so he can adapt and use them in a non-direct fashion.

It goes even further for me. Wenwu "commands" the rings. He is strictly using them to meet his ends. Shang Chi however, attempts to "harmonize", and cooperate with them in his fighting style. It indicates each of their own perspective and headspace. Wenwu is willing to use anything and everything to achieve his goals. Shang Chi uses them to accentuate his fighting style. Wenwu is much more visceral with them.

What makes Shang-Chi & his family more interesting is, they represent different aspects of the Yin and Yang philosophy. Wenwu represents Yin (darkness) who has a bit of Yang (his love towards Ying Li and his family). Ying Li on the other hand represents Yang (side of light since she's a dutiful guardian of Ta Lo), but I'm not sure in what aspect of her that bit of Yin represents. Shang-Chi at the end of the movie is Yin & Yang balanced (he has the good & bad of his parents as well as their powers).

Katy's grandmother isn't delusion, it's a thing in Asian culture where we give to the dead ancestors food and money and give them a spot at the table, usually mainly during chinese new year for my family, though we usually keep the items and food after so the joke is Katy's Grandmother got items she likes that she'll keep after. The writers of the film definitely know and lived through these experiences to write such accurate and comedic scenes from a younger asian perspective. I understand the misinterpretation as this is very nuanced, I could tell the majority of audiences wouldn't get the full meaning, makes Shang Chi a very realistic and relatable film for some asian audiences.

Dude ! I watched this movie like 5 times in theaters, and you still managed to find out so much I haven't noticed... Thanks, Lad ! I was looking forward to your breakdown, and you definitely didn't disappoint. As a person from Chinese descent myself but who was born and raised in Europe, this movie hit so many points that resonate with me : - Shang Chi is the young 1st gen Asian migrant who, pretty much like Simu, came to America (Canada for Simu) from China when he was a kid, and had to adapt to a Whole new world (probably why Aladdin's song is his favorite Karaoke song in the movie), - Katy is the already comfortably American 3rd gen who starts the movie by being proudly carefree American in front of her friend and her mother, but later, gets her views on life challenged when she's faced with actual stakes and "authentic" traditional chinese elders wisdom (even though the movie could have delved a bit deeper on that), - Xialin is the one who's always lived under authoritarian and mysoginistic China (metaphored by her father), and couldn't escape to a Western country, so she escaped to neighbouring Macau, which, even if it's still technically part of China, still enjoys more freedom than China (I suspect originally, that part was supposed to be in HK, which would have made much more sense, given the amount of legendary HK actors in the movie, but then... being in 2019, the massive protests and police brutality happened in HK, which didn't make production there possible anymore... thanks, China ! So Macau it is), where she could be the badass she ever wanted to be. You could trade Macau for either HK or Taiwan, and it would have worked the same, but I guess Macau is the most visually impressive, with it's majestic skyline and its gambling environment. Putting her in a city like Shanghai was : 1 probably off-limits for Disney, and 2 thematically not compatible, since it's still very much integral part of China, - Wen Wu is everything that represents one side of modern (and in some ways, traditional China) : Has the ultimate power (the 10 rings in the movie) and is millenia old, can't change and stuck in his old ways (he even says it himself after his wife died), greedy (he conquered everything in the world for a 1000 years), authoritative, does whatever he wants, control freak, patriarchy, doesn't give any space for arguments (and that's not really giving a bad rap to china, it really is how it is in real life, right now). He's very much the Yin (down to how his compound look, that is almost entirely black, with only one bright colored part in all of it : the wooden dragon sculpture, that seemingly comes from Ta Lo), - Ta Lo and its people, especially the mother and the aunt, represents the "real" traditional side of China : spiritualism, altruism, family, martial arts (especially Taiji), nature, keeping in touch with their roots and their mystical side (including the mythical creatures, like the Fu dogs, phoenixs, kirins, Hulijins, and of course, the dragon)... They're basically the Yang side of China (when we first arrive in the village, it is sunny, vibrantly colored, grandiose... with the only dark spot of the village being of course the Sealed Gate). And when Wen Wu's arrives, it corrupts everything and toned the whole village in dark gray. So everything, every character, and even every set has meaning in this movie. The more I watch it (I've watched it 3 times, already), the more I can see it. Intentionally or not, it is a very well crafted universe, if anything a bit rushed because of its feature film format (I actually think it would have benefitted to have the luxury of a Disney+ series treatment, so we could explore and dive more deeply into all its themes and characters).

A detail I found was that according to Xialing, Wenwu didn't look at her because she reminded him of Ying Li but Ying Nan told Shang Chi that he was more like their mother. This shows that Wenwu looked at the outer apperance because Shang Chi was more like their mother from heart but Xialing was like him as she wanted to rule and her own kingdom. Waipo isn't deluded. Asians, esp more traditional Asians, would always set aside food for their dead loved ones, especially parents / siblings / kids / partners as if they're still with us. As a Filipino from a more traditional family, I can understand her not letting people sit in her late husband's seat at the table. It's not about her being unable to move on, it's about our culture of treating dead relatives as if they're still with us.

Also, you missed one huge detail. Right from the bus fight scene, you can see that Shang was fighting with 'closed fist' fighting style, meaning he was channeling his anger through his fighting style, as he was yet to accept his mother's death and let go of the guilt. But as we go towards the end of the film, we see that his fighting style changes to 'open hand' fighting style, because he has then accepted that his mother is not going to come back (also because his Aunt taught him the Ta Loan style of Kung fu). And in the last fight, we can see that Wenwu's facial expressions showed anger and agony, whereas Shang was looking much more calm. His character arc changed throughout the film. Also, during the fight scene between Wenwu and Shang, we can see that Shang used the gray shockwave technique.

Two Interesting Details i also noticed: 1) The Person fighting the extremist from Iron Man 3 looks a lot like a Widow( The Ones from The Black Widow film after Natasha set them free). This shows that The widows can make their own choices now, and this Widow used her abilities to make money in the Golden Daggers Club. 2) In the Final battle, Wenwu uses the rings to go under the ground beneath Shang Chi, Then suddenly changes his arm stance to bring them out of the ground and hit Shang Chi, then later when Shang Chi fights the Dweller in Darkness he uses the same arm stance to embody the Rings in the Dweller In Darkness's body, then changes his stance like his father did, and pulled the rings out of the dragon, Killing it. This shows that Shang Chi is using both of his parents skills and powers to embrace his past and make sure the future is in his control.

My grandma does the same. For more than 20 years now, after my grandpa passed away, she always puts food on our family shrine every morning for him. There's even this tradition of putting food on shrine or altar, then we'll wait for a while and throw something like dice and if the dice come out in a formation that indicates the ancestors are done eating, we may eat. Here's something you missed. When Shang Chi is stepping on the rings to kick Weng wu, it's not only similar to Star lord stepping on Doctor Strange's magic rings, but in fact originally this was used by Mordo when he was training Doctor Strange and was using the magic enchanted boots, he also used the same technique when they were running around in the mirror dimension.

Did you notice how after Xialing, Shang Chi's sister, cleared the dragon's eye of the small monsters the dragon looked at her? Soon after she's riding the dragon! Not everyone could ride the dragon, I think it's a special honour reserved for those of dragon's blood, making Shang Chi and Xialing equals in that regard. I think she could wield the rings and control them as her mother, father and brother all have. And with her taking over the family business, I think that's a real possibility moving forward.

Re: The scene with Waipo foreshadowing; I didn't take it to mean she is deluded, rather it struck me as a cultural thing. Her phrasing implies she knows he's deceased, so she's not just suffering from dementia. The Chinese venerate their ancestors and deceased loved ones a lot, it's a big part of the culture. Simultaneously, Katy grew up in the US, so she doesn't have the same traditions, or at least they're not as important to her. That's why she tells her grandma to "move on" -- That is a very western idea, a very western sentiment, "moving on." I think you're wrong, and the scene is supposed to serve as representation for Chinese and Chinese-Americans whose parents or grandparents migrated. It's a scene that exists specifically for the people who'll understand it. That's further supported by what you noticed later, about how Katy barely knows how to use chopsticks and is largely unfamiliar with Asian culture.

Exactly. I think it really struck a chord, and captured a feeling many Americans of Asian descent feel. To a large extent, this movie is about connecting with/accepting all the parts of your heritage, even when they come from very different places, like America and Asia. It’s the development both Shang-Chi and Katy go through to some extent. And again I think it’s something that’s resonant when having multiple cultural heritages.

She sees her dead father and asks without words, "did you kill him?" and the look of sorrow and regret on his face let's her know his sacrifice. The subtle head nod she gave was understanding. It was such a brilliant storytelling moment for me that added so much more weight in a chaotic scene

I have two things to say 1. When the Death dealer scars teen shang chi on his face, look in the background his father can't look at his pain and is kinda dissapointed on his defeat. 2. Another one, is that when Shang's mother was fighting with Wenwu, when she gets the rings for a moment the rings turn orange, the same way when Shang chi get the rings. With them the rings are orange and with Wenwu are purple ¿why? Maybe for the connection with the Dragon spirit or power. So it make sense that look like a breath of fire in the Clip you show. Shang's mother get the rings orange and turn back to Wenwu but like a punch, but she could use the rings for her self, but she didn't want power. Ah, and the intention in the fight between the parents was a romantic dance, because there is were they fall in love, and martial arts is supposed to be a dance too.

In the flashback scene to Spiderman: Homecoming when Canadian Lad was referring to the the dude blogging on the bus in Shang Chi, at 4:57 time stamp of this video, there is a older, bearded dude with an old school boombox standing next to the guy as he asks Spiderman to do a flip. That bearded guy is Kirk Thatcher who was the punk on the bus in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. You may recall during that scene James Kirk asked him to turn the music down but the punk flips him off and cranks the music. That's when Spock neck pinches him, silencing the boombox. Not only is that the same guy in Spiderman Homecoming, referenced in this Shang Chi breakdown, but he's holding the same boombox from 1986's Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. 3:33 The whole “thinking your loved ones are still with you even post death” is a common cultural tradition. The scene with Katy’s grandma represents a different way of people deal with death in the wider narrative. Katy’s grandma is more willing to care for her husband after death while Wen-Wu goes out of his way to try to find his wife and not move on.

11:38 and it also showcases that Shang Chi had in fact killed before and had no problems with doing the deed again. Vengeance really was indeed on his mind. Which definitely makes sense leading up to when he confessed to Katy that he had killed the one responsible for killing his mother.

Another detail you can easily spot if you pay close attention. When Wenwu uses the rings, blue lightning surges around them. Blue lightning is often depicted as someone having a cold demeanor. While in Shang-chi's case the rings glow yellow almost like the sun, and the sun is usually seen as a kind and happy personality.
@hellowhat8903 жыл бұрын
11:05 And also, let us remember that this scene also references/reminds us of a line that Michelle Yeoh as Auntie Nan says in the trailer which doesn't actually get used in the movie but we know what she's implying when she tells Shang-Chi to let go of the past and to accept who he is: Her trailer line: (Part of it is used in the movie but not the last part) "You are a product of all who came before you. The legacy of your family... You are your mother... and whether you like it or not... you're also your father." Her movie line: "Your mother knew who she was... do you? You are a product of all who came before you. The legacy of your family, the good and the bad, it is all a part of who you are. Stop hiding nephew. It only prolongs the pain." Definitely fits with the theme that even though Xialing and Shang Chi despised Wenwu, they still understood that he was still their dad. It took both their mom and dad's skills and abilities together that they were taught to defeat the Dweller in Darkness. And as brother and sister, it took both of them to build up to finishing the fight.

I don't know if this has been said in the comments, but, when Shang- Chi uses the rings they rarely ever even touch his body as if he is in a connection or is just sort of teaming up with them, meanwhile when wenwu uses them he will always call them back almost immediately as if he is controlling them instead of teaming up with the rings.

when Shang chi and his father were fighting they tangle their rings like a rope then the camera points at shang chi for a few seconds and later points at his father for a few seconds. In this particular scene there is more bass to the scene where it shows shang chi but there is less bass when it shows his father. This scene indicates us that shang chi has more power than his father.
