I Watched the Republican Convention. The Democrats Can Still Win.

Күн бұрын

This year’s Republican National Convention was Donald Trump’s third as the party’s nominee, but it was the first that felt like a full expression of a G.O.P. that has fully fallen in line with Trumpism. And the mood was jubilant. Speakers even made efforts to reach out to unions, Black voters and immigrants - imagining a big-tent Republican Party that could be far more formidable at the ballot box.
But if the Democrats were running a strong candidate right now, no Democrat would look at that convention with fear.
In this conversation, moderated by the show’s senior editor, Claire Gordon, we dissect the themes and undercurrents of the convention and what they might signal about a Republican Party in the midst of change. We discuss how the party is messaging about race, immigration and populism; what JD Vance believes and represents for the party; what all this means for a Democratic Party that is divided about President Biden’s candidacy; and more.

Biden condition as of today July20, 2024 is even a lot worse than attending First Debate three weeks ago. Biden showed plain anger and loss of focus every time he was interviewed for past 2 weeks. Even his pronunciation is worse than weeks ago. If Biden is going to step aside within days, then let's see who would be willing to contest the top or the bottom of the ticket. Don't see many are willing. Except Harris is "obligated" to step up under any circumstances.
@kevinwoolley7960
@kevinwoolley7960 2 ай бұрын
It's not that he is rapidly declining the last two weeks, it's that his handlers completely hid him from any unscripted unteleprompted interaction with anyone for most of the last 4 years. Instead of demanding that he sit for unscripted interviews and press conferences, the mainstream media criticized everyone who dared to suggest that he frequently looked lost and befuddled,, and they knowingly conducted interviews with him where the questions had been previously approved by the administration, something that has never been done and never should be done in a free democracy. If you think he's worse in the last couple of weeks, it's only because you haven't watched any of his interactions in the last 4 years very closely.

A lot of ppl see Republicans as well off or wealthy. They vote Democrat because they feel they do not get paid well enough or out of envy. In fact, ppl who feel this way don't understand that their wages-- while they could get a higher paying job elsewhere -- are average. And there is nothing wrong with being average...it's very hard to develop skills that might put one in a higher wage bracket. Plus lots and lots of Repubs earn average wages as well, but the stigma remains because ppl want more for themselves. What a lot of those folks who vote Demo out of feelings of "being average"... don't understand is that by voting Demo they limit their opportunities more to do better. And usually much of that way of getting better involves transfer payments from other taxpayers. That ain't the way to get ahead.

However…when discussing matters related to Trump I find myself laughing…mainly because of the WAY he predictably contorts himself like a Cirque du Soleil acrobat…twisting his words to hide his obvious TDS…a fact that everyone listening notices…and more importantly…has come to expect.

Shouldn’t Trump be fund raising for the Trump Library? Can’t imagine why he’s putting himself through this again.

At 31:30 Ezra Klein talks about isolationism as a strain in the GOP, but he just takes *** at face value *** the things that Trump and Vance *say* about Ukraine. Like, "we don’t want to spend money in Ukraine we want to rebuild our industrial base." Sure. Right. I remember that from the first term. Infrastructure Week, they called it. How can Klein be this naïve?

It happens even to best of liars: they eventually start to believe in their own lies and that when the fall starts. The problem is how long will it take, how much damage it will cause and what it will also bring down. The US has problems that have been brewing since the day the first pilgrims landed. For a long time, the qualities that have also been brewing since that day kinda kept the problems under the rug. IMHO, the problem is not a weakening of the qualities but the fact that there's no space left under the rug.

Saying at a campaign event in July that we care about the races, the immigration of people who are working to supply the US supermarket, and the employees within that supply chain, does it change anything below the surface.😮😮😮

22:00 that's an important point! Look into what happened to Gerog Gartner - the German POW who excaped a prisioner camp in the US and spend a few decades under a false identity. He went crazy - he now speaks in German and English mixing the two languages mid sentence and talks about himself as if it was someone who's not him. The problem is that there's a characteristic of our personalities that exists in all of us but in different levels - and we still can't explain why that is so - and the higher the level is the easier it is for a person to maintain that cognitive dissonance for a long time: psychopathy. And since that makes it easier to climb the steps of the political power we end up having a lot of people with high levels of psychopahy in leadership positions. The good news is that most humans score very low in the psychopathy index. (💡) In my opinion what we must do to people in high positions both in government and in the private sector who are caught deceiving, lying, defrauding or covering thing up is what the barman did to Edward Norton's character in The Grifters when he sees a 2 dollar bill on Norton's hand where just before he turned his back to get the change there was a 20 dollar bill. (We should not do exacly what he did! We should be quick and effective in the prosecution and punishment.).

💡I hypothesis came to me about the polarization and why Trump supporters have reached such levels of compativeness: If your explanation for what causes J.D. Vance to undergo a conversionn because how hard it is to keep the cognitive dissonance going for too long we should expect the same to also have happened - much earlier, btw - with Trump supporters. BTW, we should also expect that journalists to also be affected. Something tells me, for instance, that you don't feel comfortable saying that "the case againstg Trump in NY created the appearance that the system was against him" . The discomfort is caused because it did not create an appearance - it was indeed lawfare. For a journalist who votes democrat I see two possibiliies: either becoming a Rachel Meadows or a Jon Stewart - and I think that luck is on our side and you'll edn up like a Jon Stewart. Unfortunately most people who work in news media will become Rachel Meadows. Here in Brazil I'm less hopeful but also less worried. We're alsready not that far from grown so it will be a short fall and we won't take anyone else with us. Also, there are fewer people working in the news media and the few independent outlets struggle to fund themselves - there's no Jon Stewart or Symour Hersh here anymore - they are all dead. We don't even have an Ezra Klein around. Also, instead of Trump we have Lula - and Lula is a genius ... an evil genius. I heard rumours that DuPont offered him millions of dollars for a sample of his skin. Their goal is to develop the perfect anti-adherent coating: one that nothing sticks to and that never gets damaged. Lula is a crook but he managed to people who had left his party because they considered Lula's actions in 2003 a betrayal of party principles to end up blindly supporting him. But ... I lived through the hyper-inflation and saw the 1982 national soccer team loose the world cup - it won't get worse that. The problem is what will happen to your country - a nation that has has the potential to end life on earth things get worse. The irony is it would also fix Global Warming because the nuclear winter would most likely take our planet back to the Snow Ball Earth times. BTW, you have no idea how the FED's interest rate hike is damaging almost all countries around the world - and they are that high because that's what the people understand to be the correct measure and the Democrats need to win. It's not the correct measure - it wasn't correct when Paul Volker got Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and other countries bankrupt in the 1980s. You people should stop trying to fix things with "advertisement campaigns" and really man up because the problem is serious but there's a solution. The solution is a candidate who can get a huge number of Trump voters to change sides and that person exists - it's a man, he's white and old: Bernie Sanders.

At 00:23:36 theres a section where, rather than admit to himself and his audience that these people are now openly calling themselves "Christian Nationalists" Ezra Klein dredges deep for an acceptable euphemism and comes up with "National Conservative" (there's a Wikipedia entry for that, and it's basically what you call a Christian Nationalist if you're afraid you might lose your audience if you call the movmeent what it is.)

Are which American institutions trustworthy? Well, I can't remember the last time a cop shook me down for cash while I was walking around downtown. Heck, I'd say "never". Is my chemistry degree, obtained from a small state college good? Yeah, I'm listed as co-inventor on six technologies, so I'd say they did at least OK. I graduated high school able to read, write, and do algebra, with some history and art thrown in. No complaints. As far as I can tell, a lot of the conservative upset with modern institutions is the idea that no, not everyone is Christian, and yes, LTGBQ+ people are indeed human. They complain that the EPA doesn't want them to dump their used motor oil in the creek. Are there excesses? Certainly. Tell me a single human endeavor in which some members don't go to excess - one. Does that me we should just let everyone do their thing, so long as they don't want a sex change, or are against young-earth creationism being taught in their geology classes? No.
