as a blade , all wednesday fans were urged to get coaches so there was barely any coming in bt team/train and also they all came into shef at the same time on coaches and got put into the same couple pubs on the road then was escorted from there

Most derby rivalries in the UK are hyped up, I first went to a Sheffield derby as a 9 year old kid back in 1970 and have been to numerous since, there used to be a more fierce rivalry between the two sets of supporters and there has been some serious incidents between them over the years, which have included the death of a Sheffield United fan outside Wembley in 1993 and serious injuries to others in Sheffield, the hooligan elements used to clash quite often in Sheffield city centre on Saturday nights back in the day, and yes many of them knew each other, at least on face and sometimes name terms. Sheffield was built on steel and cutlery manufacturing, the legacy of its working class people is that they are hard but generally fair, even to this day, but most of these kids you see in the video taunting outside the ground before the match are just playing at it now, the coppers. CCTV and people using mobile phones have all but put and end to it!

another good thing about our derby is no matter where we are in the league and everything it's still guaranteed to be a close match! We're 15th and you're second and it was still such a tight game which could've gone either way. That's how you know it's a proper rivalry, everyone puts their all in!

I worked in Sheffield for 6 weeks about 15 years ago and during that period there was a Steel City derby. Now I`m used to Merseyside derbies and have been to more than a few Manchester ones. I`ve even been to an Old Firm game and a North Germany Derby (Bremen and Hamburg) but I have never come across such out and out hatred as I came across in Sheffield. They really do totally despise each other.

Very good video. I was near the welcome committee with my lad when the Wendy turned up. It was bedlam, noisy and nasty. The game was as shite as they usually are but the noise when we scored was next level. The result is all that mattered. Every blade has a Wednesday mate or two. It takes a few days for the dust to settle before we can even talk about the game. For one weekend the hate of all things Wednesday and vice versa in this city is measurable. Now we wait till the new year for the return at their shit house. Cant wait. BTW… there’s more relief than joy winning this fixture. It’s horrible losing so the relief not losing when you win is off the scale.

I worked in Sheffield in 1979 and found the United ites and Wednesday ites , as they called themselves, mixed without any problems and remember saying to them how different it was from Newcastle and the mackems, who truly loathe each other. Well it has certainly changed since then and that looked to be a real derby with a brilliant atmosphere and definitely premier league standard. I have always believed that should Sheffield get the top team that the city certainly deserves then they should merge although having seen the video the chances of that happening are less than zero

So why do they sing a song they nicked off Wednesday...the Hark Now chant?. That relates to the Boxing day match(police allowed that then) in 1979, when Wednesday hammered Utd 4-0?
