so there are two things about this show that bother me to no end 1: the characters, including two professional duel monsters players, say the monsters are from capsule monsters, and conclude almost immediately that they're in the world of capsule monsters, when clearly all of the monsters are from duel monsters. there's no reason to actually think this world is related to capsule monsters and not just duel monsters again. 2: grandpa has the summoned skull, but that's literally not his card, it was never in his deck. it was a card yugi owned before he got his grandpa's, that he then added into his grandpa's deck when he inherited it. edit: actually a third thing, why doesn't yugi use the powers of buster blader, the legendary dragon slayer, to defeat the five dragons. that's literally his whole thing! it feels like the writers never actually watched yu-gi-oh and were just told "here's the popular monsters, here's the important characters, are these are the magic macguffins, just figure out some plot involving all these and tangentially connect it to ancient eygpt"

Oh as for who created Capaule Monsters, I don't think that's ever explained. Capsule Monsters was in season 0 but just as one of the games of the chapter story, like what Duel Monsters itself almost was, and unlike Duel Monsters, the best Capsule Monsters were three games

We only see 20 monsters from CapMon in the manga: Torigun The Great "Pa" Eye Mouth Flower Man Devil Castle Head Sucker Gumbo Cobrada Dinosaur Wing The Skull From the first game. Mogley Ninja Squid Beeton Brain Slime Toppo Megaton Nama Hargen Big Foot Zoid M Armorsaurus From the second game. To my knowledge, none of these have ever been printed as cards in the Yugioh Card Game and I don't think a single monster that showed up in this show was one of these 20.

Actually Yu-Gi-Oh was initially aimed for teenagers but in 4kids’s desire to make the anime accessible for kids they made the dialogue much more simplistic because they felt ten year olds couldn’t put two and two together. Also, Capsule Monsters was actually in the manga/Season Zero which by the way had Tea and Tristan more active in the series back when it wasn’t centered around Duel Monsters.

I remember watching this Ark as a kid and I was so baffled how the game works and the story being so boring it lead to me wishing i could rewatch Battle City, because at least the stakes were high, and the narrative was on pont to make you wanna watch more. Also, we could have gotten a Red-Eyes armor for Joey but unfortunately yami yugi had to get all the armor upgrades and that's just makes me sad.

and then the arc with Bakura afterwards WAS the D&D RPG thing, only it wasn't a spin off series, although nor was it as fleshed out as I would have liked it to be. I think I would have liked that arc more if we actually got to see the "game" aspect of it more, rather than have it feel more like a historical movie being reenacted.

The concept is pretty good, if only it had it's own anime to explore it with a new cast of characters instead of Yugi and friends. It could've been the Yugioh version of Digimon/Pokemon, letting us explore the world and lore of Yugioh which most people don't know. Master Duel, Duel Terminal and guidebooks give us the gist of it, but fully exploring it with an anime would be great.

I can imagine Studio Gallop animating this thinking this would be a cool way to capitalize on the insane popularity of Pokemon without getting sued. Then they realize somewhere along the way how dumb this actually was. This was so bad they didn't even bother recording a Japanese version. Also, something worth bringing up is the absence of Kaiba. A dub-only filler arc without Kaiba? Not only does Kaiba historically shine in filler arcs but this is the dub. Say what you want about 4kids but Eric Stuart absolutely killed it as Kaiba. They even have Blue Eyes as the mcguffin to beat the final trial.

I guess this is why Fillers are so hard to write, because on one hand if you play it too safe you risk getting a boring story that has no stakes because they have to revert back to the previous status quo at the end, but if you allow the writters to just go insane and have complete freedom over the plot and make major retcons, you risk getting..... When i first heard about this series I a initially very excited. I own the first 7 volumes of the yugioh manga and the Capsule Monsters games against Mokuba are some of my favorite. Then someone told me it has absolutely no connection to those games and I immediately disinterested. Never saw it and I'm definitely glad I didn't.

This arc didn’t add or take away anything to the story. It was a side quest which ultimately accomplished nothing and changed nothing for any of the characters. That’s what I didn’t like about the capsule monster arc.

It is one of if not the favorite part of the DM series for me. The armor merges were amazing. Dark Magician, Red Eyes and Magician of Chaos merges are core childhood memories. I tried to "heatgun" warp a bunch of junk toilet lids into armor over the stove as a kid as a result. (Father was a hoarder with a lot of stuff in the backyard.) The beating after that also turned into a core memory.

Glad they aired it because it filled the void of depression when the series ended and was able to move on once capsule monster ended. The ending to the actual series was just too much for me to handle as I didn't have access to cable where GX was aired and I wasn't old and knowledgeable about internet pirated content until 5 years later.

so fun fact i had the movie version of capsule monsters as a kid and some scenes were actually cut and weren't included in the main movie (they were still watchable under a deleted scenes section of the movie) one of those scenes that was cut was the scene of grandpa saying high level monsters need time to recharge and there were a couple scenes in the desert that were also cut i don't remember all of them but i remember there being 6 that being said i only owned the movie covering the first half of the arc so i have no idea if anything was cut from the 2nd half, the first movie ends right as they beat the 2nd trial and fly into the sky

Like capsule monsters there was just another of several games yugi played there, it was never MEANT to be anything more than that, hell NOT EVEN DUEL MONSTERS WAS MEANT TO BE MUCH MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER RANDOM GAME YUGI PLAYED, it just so happened that this weird card game got insanely popular among the japanese fandom and thus Takahashi pivoted the manga to focus on it. But not every game is Duel Monsters, not every game CAN be Duel Monsters. (Also the Capsule Monsters game in Yugioh Zero had actual rules, unlike whatever the fuck this spin off show's bastardized version of Capsule Monsters is.)

it's a shame this miniseries sucked because my brother and i had the capsule monsters video game on ps2 and it was amazing. basically a mashup of fire emblem, chess, and yugioh, with beautiful art for the stages, attack animations for the monsters, and full voice acting. highly recommend downloading an emulator and checking it out, i think it still holds up and i actually really wish they'd made more capsule monsters games.
