The XF is a nice car to drive, but the XJ is levels above in driving pleasure and interior. The XJ is surprisingly nimble for its size. There will be much more content for you in an XJ vs an XF (as nice as XFs are).

I don`t know much about Jaguars, but I`m not against them. I say, first choice E39 M5 2nd Jaguar XJ 3rd E90/E93/E92 M3 Be aware of rod knock on the BMW V8s (or V10s) they are known to chew trough rod bearings.

E39 m5 and xfr were the first cars that came to mind so great minds think alike haha. Looked at Lexus isf those are just outside your budget but m3 e90 would be better anyway. Even panamera would be a struggle. Me personally would go for a Impreza sti or Octavia vrs but not sure that's for you

It's already been mentioned, but both the V8 in the E90 M3 and the V10 in the E60 M5 do have quite a large appetite for rod bearings. So be wary of engine knocks!

The Jags have to be the go to. Styling is stunning, engines are brutal, possibly too brutal, but the key dad car piece is surely it’s less in your face than the BMW’s or Audi’s which scream aggression. Kids love the space, getting in and out has to be easy, not just every day but in the event of an emergency which could well happen driving a fast car… Maybe that’s me applying a near 60 year old mindset, but it’s a balance. Dad gets to blast around, or drive the family serenely when needed. Best of all worlds… surely Jags are now no longer old Mens cars, but for those mature of mind who remember the rich heritage of sport and real driving.

I still think you should take an M5/M6 V10 for a spin. 80k miler for about 15k is achievable. Everyone worries about the rod bearings and throttle bodies but many have been done now, and honestly it’s not that big a deal. It’s so much more exhilarating and special to drive than the V8 M3. The sound is epic.

I currently have both an e39 m5 and e92 m3. Both amazing cars. E39 is more practical with 4 doors and real useable torque in gear. The challenge is they're getting old (rust) and some parts are getting harder to find. Chain tensioners and guides are a very common failing point and one of the main guides is now NLA. E92 m3 will also be expensive to maintain, but more modern and parts more readily available.

The Jag XF would be a bargain performance car and fairly young. However, you need a car interesting enough that will attract new viewers/subscribers too so the M5 is probably the one and also what I would go for (and I don't even like BMW's !).

Hi Ben I'm pretty much in the same boat. I'm looking for an interesting car sub £15k. The motors I keep looking at are the Maserati Quattraporte, Merc CL500, Audi S5 (yes I'm having a go at the raffle)Jag XK, XKR, SV8/XFR I keep switching between which one to go for then a mate suggested a BMW 6 series diesel (I know right!) but cheaper road tax, more mpg and easily tunable with an ECU upgrade but still no V8...very much interested to hear that prices are on the decline should be able to get more motor for the moolah😀 - I'll be watching your channel with a keen eye 👍

Of the cars in this video, the XF is probably the smartest buy as a fast family car. Mean looks, amazing performance, practicality, and a little bit of comfort/luxury too! Obviously Jags aren't known for their reliability but at least they aren't as old or complicated as some of the other cars on here. Personally, I'd love to see you buy an M3 cos I like the looks and the specialness of it being the only V8 M3, but you just know that at around £15k it won't have been that well looked after and it doesn't have much torque for a V8.

An interesting challenge. I wonder though if searching for 400bhp excludes a number of interesting or rare performance cars that could also be worth a look. They only have 260bhp but theres a couple of MG ZT260s up for around the 15k mark. Thats a car with a very interesting backstory which could make some good content. Theres also one Alfa 156 GTA in budget too (but that could be a proper money pit!)

My only thought is that with the way you’ve built your channel on the premise of driving cars most Dads wouldn’t think they could now they have responsibilities it would be a shame if you followed the heard with a BMW or Audi, but I appreciate you also have to be realistic and sometimes the heard moves in a certain direction for a reason!

Bentley...quite right ....another time. Jag XK...great GT, but too small with a kid. Imo, go for the Jag XJ. I have an XK and a great, very reliable 4 door Honda Civic as a daily. If I ever come into some more money I would love to have a Jag XJ as my large four door!

I’m going to have to say the Jag XF is my pick. The XJ just looks way to executive and would make it a Dad Chauffeur rather than a Dad Car. The BMWs are the more reliable and “safe” choices, but you’ve had an Aston and currently a Messa.. I don’t think “safe” is really your thing, especially if real world ownership can spawn off interesting content for the channel 😊

All nice cars. Bentley has your name in it though. See if can test and review the main ones with shortlist. See what kids like. Jag probably suit character bit more. Love the old Merc c63 engine sounds. Not sure BMW suit as well. Seen Chrysler 300c V8 hemi, but more for sound. Maybe V8 lexus, someone knew had hybrid with modified exhaust. Said used to sneak up quietly to people knew, then rev engine to scare them.

E39 m5 is probably the least problematic, e60 is very fragile and you’ll be constantly chasing dash lights, fast car tho.. I spent 6 months last year looking for a decent e92 m3 with a 18k budget and I couldn’t find one for a non dreamer price so I bought a b7 rs4 in the end, stage 2 MRC with de cat, things a beast, I would still prefer the m3 tho.. Think more about a c63 I’ve never driven one but I know there meant to be epic..

Brainwave! Sorry if someone else already mentioned: Chrysler 300C. Hear me out: £15k could potentially get you an SRT in the current climate. Awesome. £10k gets you a decent 5.7 hemi. Awesome. £5k gets you a decent CRD. Less awesome, but at sub-5k surely a contender. So I think a good one that could feature at any time during the trading down series!

The e39 M5s are mega but sub 15k are the absolute bottom end of the market so I'd be weary. They are also very old now with very outdated tech. That could be annoying. The Jags are ace. If you look at an XJ, make sure it's the Supersport model. Any other 5L XJ in that budget will be the Naturally Aspirated 5L with around 385bhp. In the XFs, only the XFR & XFRS have the supercharged 500+ bhp 5L V8. Parts for the XFR are way cheaper than 500 bhp BM/Merc/Audi alternatives and they generally have fewer weak spots. However, the engine does have some known failure points so you must do the research and get a good one. Same goes for the Germans. AMG Mercs, M BMWS and Audi RS4 & RS6 have some eye watering repair costs even just for consumables like brakes. You could find parts/jobs cost more than the DB9. I've had a V10 M5, a Merc E55 AMG and a Jag XJR. The German cars upkeep made my eyes water.

@@dadcars yep the German brands used very expensive parts on those high end performance models. Suspension systems, brakes, electronics - all possible weak points and all very expensive to fix. I won't pretend that the Jags would be cheap but they don't have front brake discs that cost £1000-£1500 per pair (then hundreds on top for pads) or needlessly complex damping systems that can cost £2000+ per corner to fix, something that afflicts the big AMG Mercs. Don't get me wrong, I love a super saloon, currently considering getting one to replace my Audi TTRS but most old ones will come with repair costs level with or even above the DB9 because they are more complex machines. Key is to do your homework and buy with your eyes open. No point swapping a £20k car for a £15k car if the new one throws you £5k+ of repair bills, which on a V10 M5, M6 or big AMG Merc could be one repair 😱😅

I really like the XJ (well, everything apart from the strange c pillar thing - try one in black though and the problem goes away). Just wondering if you've thought about a Panamera? I currently have an 09 plate Pan 4S with 53K miles. I've always seen it as a Dad car even before I came across you channel. It's a beast when you want it to be, but when you don't, it' a pussycat, though admittedly rather a large one. I don't tend to keep my cars very long and I'm hankering after an XKR - I don't use the car much as I work from home and i since i rarely carry passengers I don't really need the back seats any more. I don't think I'm far away from you (I'm near Eastleigh), so if you wanted to have come and give the big Porker a blast let me know.

My Son has a jaguar XF R and I absolutely love it. The engine is amazing with an endless whoosh of power. It is, however, very thirsty even for a V8. My RS5 is averaging about 25mpg whereas my son getting below 20mpg in his XF. But… it’s such a practical car and it feels like a different league of quality compared to my rs5. One thing I always keep in mind is the practicality of owning the car - how easy is it to park? How easy is it driving down narrow country lanes? The XF is a deceptively big car. It’s long and wide so hard to slot into parking bays. I’d only assume the XK to be much harder still. For £15k I’d go with the XFR all day long. The engine is sooooooo special.

Mm. The xj's interior was the best and for a big car it just handled so well it really shrinks around you. It's a bit of a pain parking though the parking bays are so small. The xf was the oldest a 2010 3.0d V6 S , plenty of poke and 30 + mpg , but if I could have any of them back I would probably go for the XKR.

Said it before and ill say it again 😉 XF-R ✅ NOT! XJ SuperSport, been there and didn’t like, sold/traded it 10 days later!!! Deep dish of wheel makes your hands ache (at least it did for me) and it was totally underwhelming 😢 XF on the other hand, is a great car 😎👍🏻

Could get a minter of a E39 540i with a 6spd for 10-15k, albeit they dont come up often, you could sniff one out for review at least I'm sure. Skip the minefield of the 'cheap' M5 market.

I have a soft spot for th BMW E38 7 Series. You can even get a manual in these. But they're getting pretty old now. Otherwise, cheap BMWs, tend to be money pits and they aren't that classy or distinctive (BMW sold more 3 Series than Ford sold Mondeos). A Bentley Continental would be nice, but parts costs are awful and they have a bad reputation. You'd actually be better off with an Arnage in good shape. Audi's ride badly and aren't well-suited to British roads. A Mercedes is a competant choice, and the CLS is beautiful. But the electronics tend to fail expensively. A Porsche Panamera is also a decent choice, but the first generation is pretty butt-ugly. On the whole, I'd go for a Jaguar.

@dadcars Yes. It was a 3 litre diesel. Beautifully smooth and drivable, too. Don't suppose they'll last as long as its German rivals, but as an enjoyable 3-year company car experience, it was hard to beat.
