Born in 88, as a millennial I've gone full circle. Remember when feature phones like Nokia 3310 were amazing and cutting edge. Then Smartphones came out. We had no idea how much they were gonna change the world. We all obsessed in the "theres an app for that" days of the early 2010s. Now im utterly sick to death of it and am going back to a feature phone. Social media and smartphones are screwing us up big time. We need that boredom that comes from waiting in line for a couple of minutes or sitting in traffic. Far too much of these little dopamine hits are rewiring our brains. Im 35 now and trying to train my brain to be like it used to be after years of smartphone abuse. Im pleased to see a lot of Gen Z starting to fight back against all this digital addiction.

Hi Anthony, yeah I was born in 1995 so I was in school when I saw the iphone come out and by the end of high school so many had iphones or atleast an ipod touch. I would hate to be a teenager in school now with social media and judgement of others, be what it is nowadays. It is nice seeing a small miniority of people fight back. It's definitely a start and most people seem to be better off saying no to these things.

At least we can make changes like these to take back control and look after ourselves. My concern is the increase of things being mandatory that relieves us of control and has us under more surveillance. P.s. also you were a younger man before mobile phones and the internet probably a more free time with less responsibilities. I’m sure it was a better time 😂👍🏻

I am a smartphone user but I dont take out my phone every time I need to wait 10-20 Minutes. Sounds like this is a personal habbit problem you created by starting to take your phone out everytime you need to wait a few minutes, not a problem the phone itself makes you to create. You can have those times of boredom while owning a smartphone. Just get used to not take it out everytime you have nothing to do. At first you may need self control, but once you get used to it, you will naturally not take your phone out every time.

@@wicked1still I’ve thought it out, and the only thing that may be difficult without a phone is navigation, making important calls, and accessing banking (and even then, there are ways around all of those). Other things like social media accounts or email accounts may be difficult to have because they typically encourage some form of authentication that usually involves another device, but most people don’t technically need social media or email to exist day to day. Some people may need email for work, but if you can get around the two factor authentication, then you could simply just use a personal, work, or public computer. I’m considering a “dumb” phone or no phone in the future.

That’s telling a alcoholic that being around alcohol is fine they just need to control it. There are statistics that the smartphone has altered our cognitive abilities. I think the internet is a powerful and useful tool but we are not taking it’s addictive side as seriously as we should. We probably would when we begin to see the long term consequences of over stimulation from the internet. Imo the internet is good but needs an off switch, like everything else. The smartphone eliminates the off switch.

I think switching to dumb phones is for people who lost/lack self control, so making the smartphone unaccessible to them is the last resort for them to get rid of their bad habbits. Giving responsibility over their own bad habbits/lack of self control away and saying that its all the smartphones fault is just not the right approach and objectively not true.

I made a video recently about self discipline because I see a lot of people share that belief of taking something away as a bad thing. In Homer’s odyssey, Odysseus asked his men to strap him to the mast of his ship because he knew the sirens call was too strong. The lesson here is even the strongest of wills still have to battle with self control, urges, desires and distractions. Putting a smartphone away and using a dumb phone is a sign of weakness it’s an understanding of how self discipline actually works. It’s healthy.

God this video just explains it perfectly. My Issue that I have is that I do have a Smartphone, however I just DON'T WANT TO USE IT. Literally. I want a Feature Phone instead. Even though I can't afford to pay a Sim card which is what most of my family has told me, I want to have one for the future when I am READY to move into the Phone's Calls and Texts Space. I have been staring at a Nokla 2660 Flip which is a flip phone from HMD and I just want one. Buying one to have and use doesn't really mean that I am ready, it means I am preparing for what's to come. When I get a Sim Card for it I am definitely going to be using it as my Phone from point blank in the future. As I have been walking with Family and Driving to places like Shops everywhere we go... I see everyone WITH a Smartphone. I even counted how many I saw during that day too. In fact I could say I saw at least 100 of these. Smartphones are definitely killing us man. They really are. Just looking into that screen terrifies me. It really does. Which again tells me I want to be THAT Different person to everyone else in the world. Smartphoneless and just wants a regular phone when that Future KICKS IN.

I still have my phone with my at all times but I have been call forwarding to my landline to help put it away.

Do you feel that helps
@TenForceFalls Жыл бұрын
Absolutely, and if I want a free phone out of work it has to be a smartphone for 2fa sadly. It also helps that Verizon has rules that allow me to only forward friends and family.

Yes, go to NO phone. No one needs it. Bring the street phones back: there when you need them and safe within a phone booth. Use them only for absolute necessity or emergency.

This is so good except here I literally can't live whiteout any apps. I cant login to things that require my bank stuff. I'm literally stuck in another city (If I were alone rn I'd be stuck, or risk a 80€ fine) bc, I broke my phone in another city that I travelled into by a train. Other than that, there's not really much else in there. Just convenient stuff too, like my google calendar. And wait.. I can't login to google whiteout no phone no more...

You describing life without it and feelings before hand of feeling like you need it, feeling complete etc, is akin to most people coming clean from addiction, be it drugs or whatever. That's all it is really, the people who worked on the tech over years have even expressed in interviews etc that they're designed to keep us hooked, no different than gambling or drugs, we're sold these things not because we need them but because companies make $$$ from keeping us buying the phones, using the apps, following trends to buy this or that. If you think we can't live without phones, remember that humans have been thriving for thousands of years, the past 15 with smartphones mean nothing in the grand scheme of humankind.

There is something you didn't cover tho: How annoying it is for the people around you that you have a phone with very limited capability. I used a basic Nokia for a few months and I found myself kind of getting fazed out of my friendship groups - not on purpose, but we all rely on everyone to be independently capable of checking in on plans made in Messenger, and so I would literally be unaware of plans that were being made off the cuff, and causing annoyance to almost everyone around me for not being able to be as independent (the reality of a dumb phone is no maps, no bank app on the go, no music, no Lime or Uber) and instead relying on others more. I do wonder how irritating your wife ACTUALLY found it that she had to be responsible for your lack of phone - not to mention you leaving home without it considering your children. Anyway, definitely an angle I was interested in seeing here (or in any dumb phone video) that I haven't seen covered yet. I kind of feel like you need to all make the switch in your friendgroup to dumb phones, or have no friends that are trying to maintain friendship.

Looks like you're in the UK. I neither have, nor want a spy phone (check out what the acronym S.M.A.R.T. stands for) but I listen to audiobooks all the time on my mp3 - and it costs nothing because I download them from my local i.e. south west, library website. Wherever you are there should be the same facility.

I've gotten into the habit of minimizing my use of the phone. I've removed ALL social media from my phone. I haven't felt more in control than now. All social media is confined to my computer. If a site prompts me to link my phone, I just leave. Life actually gets better. Start riding your bicycle more and your phone less. You'll be amazed at your findings. It's more peaceful.....aside from the numerous notifications that tell you that you've used your phone x amount of time less. It's hilarious. #UnplugAndLive
