I agree vice grips aren't always the best to hold up a hood but my .02 is if the struts won't hold the hood up they are already junk anyway

My upsell percentage on worn hood struts went up when I mentioned in my story that: I've seen hoods damaged, because it either fell on the head of the technician, or fell on tools that were laying on the core support. If they're somewhat compassionate, they'll drop $100 on new hood struts and labor.

The same style of pliers I got from matco for ease of warranty, I'll say Bungie cords at harbor freight are literally 5 bucks or so for a whole big container. Also icon has a split beam for around a hundred bucks which is plenty fine for wheels, though they are all pretty decent brand to brand generally.

I like the quinn tire torque wrench because it is cheap and accurate for wheels with the presets. After about 6 months of daily use, the bottom end started acting up and poping out of place if touched slightly, so I think I am going to try to warranty it.

My experience to Snap On clip removal tool set that looks like screwdrivers is the best clip removal tool on the market. It fits the best. It doesn’t break them.

I have the same split beam torque wrench. I'm like 1 of the 2 guys in my shop that actually torques lug nuts, lol.

Hell yeah, keep on doing that. Don't want a wheel to fall off on the customer.

That silicone spray has been a great recommendation. I used it several times out of the automotive setting.

I only use hooks for calipers when I don’t have a stable place to set them down on. Think control arms, leaf springs, coil springs, etc. I do use hooks if I gotta beat on something like a wheel bearing.

Mueller Keupps, or CalVan clip lifters are excellent too.

You can use cheap ratchet straps to hold brake calipers. The best part of them is there is a long tail so they don't get left on the car's suspension.

Pet peeves of mine are folks that use a tool designed to push brake caliper pistons into the caliper. They miss their chance to tell if a caliper piston and the mounting hardware has too much resistance. If in doubt replace those hood struts are make a recommendation to replace them. If the customer declines note it then the customer is liable for any damage. I had a Mecedes on the lift for several days with the hood up the customer stopped by to retrieve something out of the car. I thought he may have left something on and drained the battery. When I was ready to start the car up the battery was dead, I put a charger on the battery and walked away. The hood fell and shorted out on the cables it burnt a hole in the hood. I completed the job called the customer I recommended replacing the hood stunts and the battery that he knew was bad he declined. His co-worker told me he had been jumping it off he even admitted it. I did not feel I was responsible for the damage. He did not return for a year then he started coming back and never said a word about the damage.

So the unfortunate reality in the automotive industry especially dealerships is that every dealership owner is by nature greedy and a disillusioned asshat that feels because they have a car lot they deserve too be multimillionaire and they'll screw over the people in their depts too live that baller lifestyle. Every tech that's working for flat rate needs too stand up tomorrow and say no more. The people that defend the flatrate system are those that stick too the low hanging fruit bolting parts on over and over again never actually having too troubleshoot complex problems. Techs that can accurately diagnose get screwed on flatrate system. It needs to go away
