I went on a treasure hunt to find what was REALLY in our mysterious barn

Hi all 👋 As the weather is picking up now that it's March, I've been focusing on clearing more vegetable garden space. That has meant clearing more brambles and trees.
Also, while planning what I'm going to fill my raised beds with using the Grow Veg planner, I've realised I need more space due to the different types of seedlings I've been growing.
This part of the garden is shadier than we'd like, so this week, it made sense to remove the trees that have been growing in front of a secret barn that we reckon has been abandoned for 30 years, and see what's really in there.
We've heard several stories from friends of the deceased and neighbours that there were gowns and expensive antiques inside, so we finally went on a treasure hunt to find the truth.

The smaller greenhouse. I would rob the glass where you can to fit in the bigger greenhouse. Old greenhouse glass can get brittle, and when trying to move it, you can have a high casualty rate! I would then cover the buckled frame with scaffolding netting to create a cage for brassicas or fruit. The netting will keep birds and butterflies off of your brassicas or soft fruit. The lorry back, would make a good store for either timber or garden equipment. It will be a big job to insulate it, and to get power to it for an office or workshop.

With the size of your property I would be looking at investing in a petrol chipper, not hiring one. With the number of trees it will always be generating more wood that needs breaking down. 6" chippers are pretty expensive but I would imagine you could make use of those intact larger limbs to mark out borders. The smaller petrol chippers are much more affordable and would pay for themselves in a couple of sessions (compared to hiring). I would keep away from the mains powered ones because with petrol engined ones you would be able to move it around the land where you need them. The chippings you create make very good mulch for around stuff you want to keep.

With such a large project on KZbin, the first thing I would do is look for sponsorship from plant hire companies. You could easily expand this beyond plant hire. Plants and soil suppliers etc, etc. I'm sure it has crossed your minds, but maybe there are limiting factors that I'm unaware of? Such as reviewing equipment and services? As for your main garden area behind the house. I would reinstate a number of things, but go for hardy tropical planting as a whole. Something I'm very passionate about and have done for a number of years. Just suggestions, but I'll be watching with great interest, no matter your future decisions.

If you have a Dremel they do an attachment for sharpening chainsaws that works really well. While clearing a paddock I clipped the ground a few too many times blunting the chain and have been able to sharpen them successfully with the Dremel attachment.

Hi Vikkie I was shouting at the TV when I seen you struggling cutting down all those branches , get a bow saw and low and behold you turned up with one , I know another viewer commented on the same thing , I had a huge tree at the bottom of my drive and the bow saw soon told it who was boss , love watching the progress you and hubby are making of the holding and bungalow, I’ve been watching from the start when you went through all the problems trying to buy a property , best thing you got the best deal being patiient, can’t wait to see next step

Hi I am a carpenters mum! I got given a green house the same as that which was going to be thrown away. I’ve removed the weakened broken glass, used pallets to strength the frame and placed around three sides to give it some wooden walls and used Clear & reinforced tarpaulin for the roof and the front where the door is. I’ve also made a window that opens opposite end to door to get some air flow in summer. Has only cost me the price of the tarpaulin from Amazon. Even though it has three wooden sides it’s lovely and light inside. I think you can salvage that one you have.

i would probably get rid of that lorry trailer, I think even as a building store it would be subject to the same fate, that is storage for stuff that's a bit to good to throw away right now, but of no immediate use or recoverable value, Its content will grow old and damp until it has declined in value and increased in annoyance to the point to which it is deemed suitable to be skipped. My advice get rid of the whole shooting match now and dont give it any more of your precious time. (bit negative, I know but it's the sort of magpie instinct you have to resist or go bonkers) The Nottingham street address is near where I live, its pre 1995 when the local dialing code changed

I'd really really recommend you get the smallest sthil petrol chainsaw available. It's light, pretty cheap, and you'll be able to get through all that chopping in a fraction of the time! Don't waste your money on a battery chainsaw, it'll be ok for some light firewood chopping, but they're not up to much more than that. With all the wood, I'd delimb all the trunks (keep and stack anything more than a few cm) chuck the rest on a fire and cook some sausages while working!

I`m single and love potatoes. I purchased 12 large felt grow bags last year. Three different varieties kept me in potatoes until Feb this year. The deer in the forested area around me certainly come into my yard and will eat my other vegetables, shrubs and flowers. I find wild rabbits do more damage though. I would certainly recommend fencing off your raised beds.The rabbits were able to get into my meter high beds.

Hi Vikkie, If you going to burn the brambles and branches mix the ash from the fire and mix it with your compost for your planters, the carbon in the ash will feed the soil. Years ago my Taid ( Welsh for grandad ) use to burn wood or branches any vegetation and mix it in soil for his veg patch. Great video Take care

At first I thought that's not a deer, then I realised it was a (non native) Muntjac or Barking deer. Weird seeing this on your property. We used to get red deer running through our garden. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Looking at the end aerial shot I wonder whether you should bite the bullet and scrap most of the old out buildings clear the space up properly and build some lovely post and beam structures with treated timber cladding. Also, maybe a decent size poly tunnel. I'm also wondering if your raised beds are deep enough for hugalkultur growing. It's a type of gardening I've never tried but any I've viewed look to be a lot deeper. 👍

You might want to look at reciprocating saws, I have a 18v compact DeWalt (birthday present from a very confused wife) but it is amazing, other brands are available depending on your battery platform but with and aggressive blade and large batteries I was able to take down most of a tree. The trunk about 45cm thick was left for my chainsaw certified neighbour and his very expensive chainsaw.

+1 for a reciprocating saw, bosch do a 24cm long wood blade which i've used to take down some mature trees, and very useful used with a metal blade for corrugated sheets and all those metal jobs! Most used tool of my extensive collection

Impressive progress you’ve made on the property! When I clear brambles, prune trees & other heavy landscaping, what works best for me is a corded reciprocating saw with a pruning blade (similar to the blade on the bow saw). That would easily handle most of what you’re cutting. Also, I have 2 one hundred foot power/extension cables, so I can use the saw anywhere on my property. Keep up the great work!

The things in the container could be sold at auction. I would find a local general auctioneer and ask them to give you lots of cardboard boxes, crates and trays. Then sort everything into separate lots. Have one for buttons, one for leather items, etc. Vintage buttons can go for a good price.

Just saw the first part of this video. We have a very few timid deer, so we do not go on our decks when they are here. One of the best things to watch is the mama teaching her fawns to jump the 4 ft pasture fence. Now I'll finish the post.

I'm loving your channel. As far as today's finds go... petrol... matches... run! Not worth the hassle. I'd remove all those outbuildings/lean too's and get a nicer view. You'll always be trying to fit your needs on to/in to something someone made in a different time, to a different spec. If you want a workshop I suspect many of your other outbuildings could be much better repurposed. Think how to get mains power and lighting to them and consider how far off the hard standing they are. Strip everything back, look at what you need (not what is there) and then work to your needs. If it's made from brick and concrete it stands a chance of a new life... corrugated steel or repurposed unit ... down it comes.

Any wood / greenery chopped, chip it up and compost it. As for the fabrics, if mice have been in it burning it / disposing of it is probably the safest way forward. the stereos / speakers if intact maybe worth something to someone. As you say, its water tight so storage / mini workshop maybe an option, especially if you can cut windows and a smaller door into it etc. Plenty of potential though. A

If you've got a reciprocating saw you can get branch cutting blades, I've got a couple and they are really good. When you get to cleaning up the greenhouses, make sure that after cleaning that you also disinfect everything as well, it will kill anything that has given of spores. Also those clothes rails could be used to support climbing frames for your beans, bit of spray paint they'll last for ages. 👍

Deer looks injured to me. My understanding is that Ivy is the second fastest growing plant in the world and If I was you I would be getting rid of it pronto.. One little piece can regrow faster then ever. It looks like you have a lot of work on your plate so why not invest in a shredder / chipper instead of hiring one. Just a thought. The lorry would be a great workroom or office. The items that are cloth are probably past use due to mice eating, living in and messing in. What a shame. Buttons sometimes can be washed, and sometimes it takes boiling them to get them to lose the odors. So it depends what they’re made of. Unfortunately not the treasure you thought might be there. Maybe the boat is full of gold.

I believe that you mentioned growing tomatoes in those greenhouses. Do your online research on the dreaded tomato blight. Proper ventalation and watering practices along with prunning will help.

Hiya love the wildlife footage. When I did my raised veg planters I got some straw bales and spread them in the bottom to make up the hight and the good thing was they rotted down and improved the soil after a year or two 😁

Could you use bits from the worst greenhouse to repair the better one? The old rugs could maybe go at the bottom of the new beds to surpress the weeds. You have certainly got your work cut out with all that clearing! I am hoping something will be worth salvaging 🤞

the beds are a little shallow for hugelculture (logs etc) but woodchip should be perfect as a bottom layer to save on compost & soil..

befor you sell the rugs check the quality of it like whats it made out of..its a shame about the moths and the rats...im quite sure some people still use the caset player sterio but really if it works...but still quite quistinonable for spare parts...the speakers are something ells you might be able to pull some good amount of material out of it or sell it together again if it works :P...some old things are worth more in material like a old broken computer that you would probably throw away you can get something out of it by smashing it to bits lol and taking the copper out of it :P

You need to replant your potatoes. Plant them in about four inches of soil, then wait for new growth to pop up and cover with soil. Continue doing that until you get to the top x

Great progress on the garden/ farm Vikkie! By the sounds of it, you need more beds for your seeds! lol I laugh as i always over seed and squeeze stuff in the garden to hubby's frustration! If there is space, i will plant there and call it a science experiment to see if it does well there, even after bending the gardening advice for it. Nothing ventured hey! I am a bit of a hoarder myself but i would bin anything with mice damage. Your question is whether it is worth your time to salvage anything of "antique" value for researchers, for little value in reward? This is clearly is from someone who had a haberdashery shop or had a mad hobby for it. They look like Easter hats or hats for a posh school to me. The headbands might of been the school colours thinking about it. This isn't a market stall kinda stash. - You could take photos for free collection of some of the dresses or even see if you have any clothing designer friends who might want them for fabric designs to replicate? It depends on how "posh" the clothes are and if you have the time. Waste tips usually take bagged fabrics to recycle. - Hats and head bands would need steam cleaning, if not damaged. Same with the rug? but bin that old carpet. You could clean that too for that little summer hut by the pond, if it flattens out ok at a push. Things to be more up beat about: - Is that a Le Cosset pot???! Wash, restore, keep and use! Looks in fair nick too from what i saw. Those iron pots are expensive and i recommend any person moving into a new home or getting married to get a good iron cooking pot on their wish list! - You can handwash the buttons and list them on Vinted or something, unless you know anyone in the antique button trade. - If the over locker sewing machine is working and you don't have one, you can use that for making bespoke curtains or pull curtains for open cupboards, using the fabric. Re the fabric, what did you have in mind for its use? I would definitely unroll it and wash it on hot. That cushinstep fabric might be for upholstering furniture, like under chairs, sofa, etc.? Looks way to thin to be underlay. Anything like silk or satin would be hard to deep clean but again time/money/value. Might be good fabric for workshop curtains? If the sewing machine is old style singer, i know they can sell for a bit. I hope that crochet blanket is ok? - Other things i noticed to be upcycled/ re vamped a lamp, mirror at the back? That cupboard and unit could be used as a temp tool storage - Those clothes rails will make great trellis! Speakers could be box shelves. Personally, i would store my non heavy garden tools in there for now. It's right by the veggie beds. Have you emptied out your paid for storage unit yet? If not, i would put in your notice of closure/ clear out and put the light weight DIY/ garden stuff in there, clear out the unit and put the heavy stuff in one of the brick barns, after clearing it out. Soft goods in the house. One less debit owed. It's good that energy prices are falling now. Too little to late for you now though. It's been mild in London but the bills have been huge and now they have changed the payment dates, so it looks like you paid the same for 6 months but for us, it was only a 3 month charge at the same price of 6 months this time! Crazy! I don't also believe in the 30% in price reduction for installing new meters, as prices are falling already. (Sorry for that rant!) You know i have been watching your channel for several years now and things i have only discovered today from looking at your page is that you have been on telly several times now, you have a second food channel and you got a book published? I always wondered how you spoke so confidently on your videos. Bravo Vikkie! 👋👋 I rarely watch normal TV these days. So will you be donning a pirate outfit for the boat reveal?! lol Can you see the trailer tyres, if it is even on trailer!? If it is on one i would check the tyres first to see if you need to order some new ones to move it. As you can tell i am very excited for this new adventure you are both on! Definitely need to reach out to some sponsors and do a dual TV deal on your progress, so you can still upload here and make a TV series. Curiosity Inc has done that in Canada. He had an antique shop but then went viral for house clearing a property he bought from a late locally famous pottery person. After clearing the house, he renovated it back to the era it was mainly lived in, i think 50's style. He did another one and now he got a dual deal to still make YT videos as well as this TV series on hoarders. In the meantime, he started getting this new house built for him on some land he bought. He sold his house and then sold his shops to pay off his mortgage for the new place. Wire the bottom of garden fence with rabbit prof fence bury fence in ground so they can dig under fence .here in c Colorado we have squirrels .they can climb we put tops on our gardens or they will get in .very destructiveb.if they get into your vehicles you are in trouble .they love coating on wires.all this is from my experiences .put top on chicken run or hawks and badgers will get them.😂

With that container I would definitely get everything out and go through it thoroughly despite it having droppings on because it could just be the surface that's bad, if it was me I would use it as either a workshop or even storage for your tools and garden equipment and off cuts of wood

You could convert that unit into an office. Just insulate it, cut open space for windows and add a ceiling roof vent and your golden.

I use a Sawzall with a construction/demolition blade (at least 8 inches) . Works better than a chainsaw for smaller branches or trees.

You need a fence around your vegetable patch, the deer have found it now. - As for the stuff in the container 99% is junk and full of mouse droppings and should go in a skip. PS Thanks for another great video.

No one bothers sewing buttons nowadays unfortunately! Mouse pee carries lots of nasty stuff so I would dump the lot ! Use it as a workshop as its dry 😱👍

The stuff that's ruined, then either dump it or see if you can weigh it in. The other stuff, it depends whether you want to spend the time selling it (or whether you have better things to do with your time) or not. If not, stick it in a general auction and just get rid of it. Not sure where you are, but Harrisons at Crowland near Peterborough have just had a sale of fabrics etc so general auction houses do sell that sort of stuff. You'll make a bit of money for not much more effort than taking it to the dump......

Id use your Google Lens to see what things like that Disney shirt is worth. It would be easy to clean, list on ebay and some shirts are worth hundreds even with defects, etc
