Terminating your own fiber is actually really easy, and fiber splice machines that come with everything you need are under a grand now FYI

I'm doing the same thing, and I was going to use similar equipment, but then I found the QSW-M5216-1T-US, and the upgrade path from sfp28 to qsfp28 using a quad breakout cable was too tempting. Switch is a lot less capable, though, and you give up the unifi environment if you are already invested in that. Upon reflection I might have gone with a smaller poe switch as well -- the big poe switches can be loud, and they're happy to burn watts on you as well, but it's not clear what 6E is going to require. It's definitely something to consider. Also, I went with SMF instead of MMF, and got some of the nice small radius stuff from FS. Have to be patient, though, as it's custom made overseas. Good luck!

Awesome! I am really excited to get my stuff setup and it seems like you have the exact same setup!
@DavidCNavas2 жыл бұрын
@@SpaceRexWill Not the exact same, but similar for sure. I'm already using sfp28 between my NAS and my main computer, and I did that for editing and at least for me I sort of wondered why I would bother with 10GbE again (maybe it was because the 10GbE card I had in my NAS was garbage and never got more than about 7, not sure). I'm quite sure you'll be done before I am -- I've been planning this for nearly two years now, and the first bits have just arrived. I still have to open up the walls, and that's where I'm balking. The plan is really to secure my network against the IOT horde, so vlans and handling multicast traffic, and all the rest of that. The hardware side is the fun part :)

Hey, great video! Sidenote though, there have been cases where really short fiber terminations like .5 meters damage your transeafers because of the strength of the laser/light. Just a heads up :)

Own cable making is not that tricky nor expensive. One thing to take notice is that these patch cables are rated of certain uses. There are horizontal runs and vertical ones thus one shall sheck it before using them wrong to find out at some random time that the fiber is broken. Also, these bloody mice and rats have likings of chewing the fiber cables...
