It’s getting to the point where I think people have forgotten why they go camping in the first place. This is really about looking cool at the stoplight.

@justinboucher5923 Thank you. All of these shows are buy, buy and buy. Get in your car or truck get out to the desert, mountains or forest, pitch a tent and watch the sunset and listen to the breeze. That's what it all about in a nutshell.
@pistonburner6448 Жыл бұрын
Yup. For the most extreme hiking trips I had a simple borrowed hiking backpack rig (probably from the '70s), a borrowed old tent, a borrowed sleeping bag, not even dedicated hiking boots but just running shoes, and a borrowed cooker. We got to the trails in a normal car. Perfectly comfortable. In the military for our most long and extreme missions out in harsh places in the middle of nowhere we had a tent which was not much more than an old tarp in the shape of a tent and a wood-burning stove with the chimney designed to exit the tent's roof. It was perfectly normal to use that equipment even in the winter, up to -25C in the snow for a week.

Whilst I do think overlanding should be kept simple, the reality is people are getting old and yet still want to get out in the wild. That´s why these overly luxurious trucks exist and to be honest most people who buy these for bragging rights only look stupid. They all look ridiculous unless you need the amenities.
@pistonburner6448 Жыл бұрын
@@MrSilverfish12 It's like summer cabins. They start out as simple buildings only, with no comforts. Then as time goes by owners (get wealthier and) add amenities, it gets easier to add amenities, roads and infrastructure appear nearer... It's the same people using them. My grandparents had a simple little one-room cabin next to a fishing village (plus a boathouse) on a remote island. A few decades later there was a full new house built there, with running water, sewage, even a dishwasher! Nowadays it even has high-speed internet and a heat pump so it has cooling even though it's in a pretty cold climate. And many of those systems can be controlled remotely. Same people, times change. It's in our nature to develop things (well, in some of our nature, others clearly only want to destroy and steal).
@MrSilverfish12 Жыл бұрын
@@pistonburner6448 also this is an exhibition. If is common to see insane builds at these events because the showcase the technology and what companies are capable off. Maybe you don´t buy the kitchen but you want the wiring done for electricity or maybe you just want a stripped out version with the off road capability. These builds are often just meant for showcase anyway

Finally someone said it! Thx Nathan! Yes, rooftop tents are stooopid for most users. Its a fad and people quickly realize their biggest value is how cool the vehicle looks. Unless you actually overland full time or for extended periods I rather use a regular ground tent.

Nice video! Would love to be there! I'm not a huge fan of roof top tents either because I don't have a great place store it or can fit myJeep in my garage with it on. Also, I live in TX and it is just too hot in the summer for me. I believe that if I lived in Colorado, for example, had tons of public state land and with beautiful weather at night then I might re-consider. We just prefer a home base and use a lightweight taxa cricket. Works for us at least but as usual there are draw backs to that as well.

Imagine how many hotel nights you could get instead of buying a $40,000 pull behind trailer- about 200 nights… that would probably earn you lifetime status, and free nights that are probably additional week or two
