Totally agree. Just saw my first one on the road today. Very cool looking, but compared to the GX, with a Toyota six cylinder for $20-30k cheaper, I can deal with the GX. And then we also have to see what the new Land Cruiser can do.
@marcochavanne9 ай бұрын
Their target market is really the people who would be buying a Defender moreso than someone considering a baby Land Cruiser or the GX550. Side note, its a bummer for larger adventurous families because neither the Grenadier or OverTrail GX trims offer a 3rd row. Which leaves the TRD Pro Sequoia which shares the same chassis as the 300 series Land Cruiser if you need more than 5 seats and some off-road capability. That presents its own issues though. The Sequoia is around 8" longer than the LX600 and 4" longer than the GX550 with poopier approach, break-over, and departure angles.
@bbqofdoom39589 ай бұрын
They are two different vehicles for two different people. I don't think there's going to be much cross shopping beyond the general "person who has $80k and wants 4WD" demographic. As far as success, unless you can find an order rejection at a dealer you're not going to find one for another 6-12 months. I'm concerned long term, as anyone should be, but there are plenty of people who are interested in this type of thing that aren't exactly in the GX demo.
@PeakDecline9 ай бұрын
@@marcochavanne The GX is far more off-road focused than the current Defender. Land Rover changed that model into something no serious off-roader would ever buy. The GX, Sequoia and possibly the Lexus LX are the closest competition to the Grenadier in price and purpose in the US market. Globally this competes mainly against the Land Cruiser 70 Series and Land Cruiser 300, of course.

I have an early build Grenadier in the UK and I have now done over 16,000 miles. Mine is a basic diesel station wagon in Britannia Blue with a white roof with a few options; unlike you I have the extended electrics, the safari roof, tow gear and the first aid kit in the door. I don't have the lockers or the electric safety gear. It is not a mass market car, so was almost guaranteed to be expensive, as they don't have the economies of scale of Toyota, Mercedes, Jeep or Ford. I love it; it replaced an old Defender and is much improved and works well for me. I don't do luxury, but my family prefer it. It had some teething issues when released but these have been fixed by the dealer. My dealer has mainly agricultural franchises and a Korean vehicle franchise.

No brainer, cost of ownership will be horrific on this. Because of depreciation, parts and service costs. Get the 250 or 300 Series Land Cruiser.

I would get an old cheap phone and a digital speedometer app. Tape it to the warning panel in front of the steering wheel. No gauge there makes my OCD go wild

Wow! Great review guys! I really feel like I know the Ineos Grenadier a lot better now. First of all, kudos to Sir Ratcliffe on throwing caution to the wind and building something an enthusiast would want. I think as regular people (without billions in cash 😂) usually say "If I were to build an off-roader, I would give it this and that" he actually did it, so that is really cool. As far as the pricing, I think there is something that sets the Grenadier behind the competition immediately, and that is Chicken tax. From my understanding, this vehicle is a ladder frame vehicle produced not within North America (France) and that would subject it to a 25% import tariff, am I correct in thinking that? That must get passed along to the consumer if a business were to remain profitable. Does this vehicle seem like it should be more of like a $55-$60K vehicle? That would make sense to me. The Ineos Grenadier is unique in that it is sort of it's own thing. Most similar to a Wrangler, but living well above the price range. It's almost in that premium off-roader segment, such as a Land Rover, but the fit and finish is not there. It's unique. I like it. $80K without heated or power seats is just a head scratcher. But there again, maybe that was influenced by Chicken tax. I think this is a really good effort from a startup company. Good job guys, can't wait to see you guys take it to Moab.

props to this car company , they basically didn't really exist until 2019 and production started in 2022. your reviewing a 2023/2024 model and analyzing it as if its competing again Toyota and Mercedes. sounds to me like they've done an incredible job in a very short amount of time. i think the price may have to do with the fact that they dont have the buying power that GM , Toyota , or Ford has. i imagine they are having to pay a lot more for each individual part than any of they're competitors have to because they dont have the same economy of scale.

I love ditching push button and power seats. The seats add so much weight and decrease payload. I also think commentary about the heaviness is a bit off - it's only a bit heavier than a GX 550, but it has a lot more payload.

I'm assuming Tommy has earned his man card at some point but due to his music selection I am going to have to rescind it until he improves. "S.L.U.T." by Bea Miller? Be better, Tommy. While this is a serious infraction there are remedial pathways available. Your man card can be regained but some remediation will be required first.

I have a 2020 BMW X5 and looks to me like you have similar interface/system/tech that comes with a BMW of the same era with the B058. It's logical seeing that it shares the same powertrain. My BMW came with the overspeed warning active as standard but did get disabled through the multiple menu settings. I definitely identified with some of your interface issues.

Listening to Alex comments about steering. 100% guaranteed the wheel alignment is out, most likely the Caster angle which should be 2 degrees. The steering and road handling is excellent, so his comments about the handling definitely indicate wheel alignment wasn’t done at PDI which is a common issue in USA

Body on Frame, IFS and solid rear axle, 2H/4H/4L Centre, Front and Back Diff Locks as standard, heated and cooled front row seats, 8 way electronic seats with lumbar support and seat massage, 360 degree cameras and sonar, with under car projection and tire placement, Carplay, Android Auto, sat nav, gps, altimeter, compass, gyro, factory winch... was about 220k RMB, just a tad over 30K USD when I bought it... Heading up to the Gobi desert next...

I don't mind the clicking noise, because it's not high pitched. It is very useful in Europe, where they have permanent cameras on the side of the roads that take a picture of the license plate every time you exceed the speed limit. The ticket is then mailed to your house. In your commute, you would know where they are, but if you drive itineraries occasionally, you can be caught by surprise.

Two things: 1. The payload of 1529 lbs is good but it is not the 2200 lbs that was promised. Second, STOP COMMENTING ON RIDE QUALITY of an empty utility! Of course it is rough, it is designed to be loaded down! Add half the payload to the vehicle, then comment on the ride.

Interesting vehicle. I'm not sure I have any firm opinions about it at this time. Alex's point about the unlikelihood of this being (initially) cross-shopped by Lexus customers is a good one. The second or third owners may cross-shop them, but probably not the first owners. It's alarming to hear about their lack of effort in integrating the premium sound component/s. Sell a premium sound system or don't. Don't say you do, upcharge for it, and fail to deliver.

I think they will succeed as a niche product for people with means. Saw 3 of them in the Highland Park Village parking lot at one time a couple weeks ago in Dallas. Doesn't make much since as an only vehicle, but maybe as a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th car. Cheaper than a G-wagon but more exclusive than a Jeep/Toyota.
@bsmukler9 ай бұрын
Yes, 2024 and newer vehicles in at least the UK are required to have the self-resetting speed warning. It’s not the manufacturer’s idea. I just think it’s cool that Sir Radcliffe had the gumption to commission his own, ground-up design for a traditional, heavy duty off roader. That’s a huge financial risk, regardless of his wealth. I also think the price range is reasonable, given what high spec 1500 and 2500 US trucks cost (MSRP). I suspect the unused spaces on the seats are for other applications of Recaro seats, since Recaro products are in so many vehicles, worldwide. [Given that, it may even be possible to get more info on lumbar systems and retrofit them.]
@stephensalt67879 ай бұрын
I think the speed warning is an EU requirement or will be very shortly, with the added bonus that the car must store where and when you override the warning so the police can check on your driving, speeding habits, for your safety of course.
