It's not awkward believe me....maids are pretty friendly to foreigners, but don't expect to get as much attention as Japanese costumers because part of the service is conversation and if you don't speak Japanese then they will just not talk to you as much

Haha, I worked in a clothes shop in Utah with a good friend of mine, I'm from Switzerland and she is from Japan. We were always joking about how messy Americans were when trying clothes and just leaving pile of clothes in dressing room floors for the employees to clean up after.
