I'm not Chinese, I'm Singaporean but I've been to China many times over 2 decades, helped by the fact it's visa-free for me all those years and now it's extended to 30days bilaterally, used to be unilaterally. The country has definitely changed for the better in terms of infrastructure, technology, poverty level, environmental pollution, public hygiene etc but there's still room for improvements in some areas while in other areas have already surpassed the developed world. But as a foreigner/tourist, China is still very much affordable to me, whether it was 10+ years ago or now. For eg, you won't get the equivalent of 1Y for bus ride or 2-3Y min for subway ride in Singapore, even the hotels are relatively much cheaper, esp in 2nd tier or less cities! But you go to China for their diverse landscapes, ancient towns and food culture, less for cities. Chinese people are generally friendly and helpful, I've been invited to join local hostelites for outside dinner and they usually rejected my part of the payment. So it's not just because you are westerner, the only white privilege you get is you look different from them (even if you are black) and will get request for wefies. Also yes CCTVs are everywhere but this is the same throughout East Asia (japan n S Korea too) and Singapore as well. CCTVs don't bother me because I'm used to it and i know they are there to catch criminals with footages (AI face recognition), less to monitor every individual. So if you have no criminal intentions, it shouldn't bother you. The reason why aforementioned countries are so safe even for women at night to walk is the CCTV, but it's not the only reason, also law abiding citizens who understood the consequence of behaving badly. London has the highest CCTV per capita but certain places in London are not safe imo because the bad people don't give a fxxk to it and perhaps the laws are lax. In summary, if you are disrespectful and bring your foreign arrogance there, they might not tolerate your nonsense as well. But isn't this the same everywhere u travel, ya? Some things say by western media is true, but most are just media propaganda. If you want to know whether a country is true as portrayed at home, and if you can afford to get a ticket to that country, then get it and judge it yourself. Eg, Pakistan is not that dangerous and Pakistani are also very hospitable. I know because in Singapore we are exposed to things both in the east and in the western world, and I've travelled widely. China is different in one aspect and you've to prepare the necessary before you go, unlike in most other countries, which is a bit of a hassle for first timer. You need to install your eSIM (the one that works there) which come with VPN before you land in China, translation app that can scan and translate, Alipay tied to your debit/credit card (which does not always work everywhere) and cash when your Alipay fails, etc. First time is always a steeper learning curve, 2nd time you start getting to be a pro, and so on.

I am Taiwanese, and I hope my message can help foreign friends understand the philosophy of governance in Chinese culture. Did you know that in countries experiencing post-war recovery, where education is not yet fully accessible, unrestricted freedom of speech can lead to rampant rumors, political instability, and hinder national progress? If you were a visionary leader, you would likely choose to open up gradually. It's important to understand that complete freedom of speech and societal stability are often hard to achieve simultaneously. For example, if you work for a major corporation in the United States, do you think employees can openly insult the CEO? Most Americans, Europeans, and even Taiwanese spend the majority of their lives within companies. We often believe we live in a place with complete freedom of speech, yet fail to notice that most of our time is actually spent in organizations where such freedom doesn't fully exist. Isn't that ironic? In reality, governing a nation is far more complex than managing a large corporation. Allowing everyone to vote for the CEO and criticize them freely as if running a business or a country is child’s play is simply too naïve. You might argue that countries and corporations are different and cannot be compared this way. However, I hope you understand this: Both corporations and citizens pay “taxes.” Therefore, the government is "supported by the people," just as the management of a company is "supported by its employees". On the surface, they seem different, but fundamentally, they are the same. When considering these issues, you must understand one key point: When a country is well-governed, the tax money contributed by the people generates a return greater than the sum of its parts (e.g., citizens gain access to high-quality infrastructure and various social protections). Similarly, when a company is well-managed, the time and effort contributed by employees generate a return greater than the sum of its parts (e.g., employees receive high salaries and benefits). On the surface, these seem different, but fundamentally, they are the same. Both governing a nation and managing a company require vision and leadership ability. When ordinary people think they understand and criticize recklessly, it inevitably leads to societal division and stagnation in national development. This is the current situation in countries like the United States, South Korea, and Germany. (Providing constructive suggestions is acceptable, but malicious criticism only plunges companies and nations into chaos.) In simple terms: If you view China as a massive corporation, with its citizens as employees, the analogy becomes clear. Employees contribute to the corporation's continuous progress and, in return, receive generous benefits. From this perspective, citizens (employees) can provide suggestions to the government (corporation). But avoiding reckless criticism of the government (corporation) is a governance approach that fosters mutual prosperity and a win-win scenario.

I am from Hong Kong and I have been traveling back and forth between China and Hong Kong since primary school. There is no credit score in China at all. Although CCTV can be used to catch criminals, it takes time to catch and find evidence. There are also news reports of criminals being caught after years of fleeing. So you don't have to worry about being followed or monitored because there are many drug addicts in China. If they are followed and monitored, then the drug addicts in China will disappear. Vehicle monitoring is very strict, such as driving while playing with mobile phones, and there are many CCTVs on the road to monitor drivers. 1.5 billion people on the road is a big problem, you know. If you are in Shenzhen or Shanghai, there will be a lot of tourists. Chinese people think differently, they like to prepare everything and then go to welcome guests. For example, during the Chinese New Year, they will clean the house, prepare food, and then welcome friends and relatives to their homes. So the Chinese government also builds the city well before welcoming tourists. In fact, I could use IG, facebook and google in China when I was a child (before 2013). These companies are unwilling to comply with Chinese laws, so China banned them. However, foreigners can use these applications if they use roaming mode of SIM cards. Although the Chinese government has banned these apps, Chinese people can use these apps when using VPNs.

Anyone who asks Chinese people about their "Social Credit Score" will look like a fool in the eyes of Chinese people. In the shopping website Taobao, a settlement tool called Alipay (similar to PayPal) has a so-called "credit score", which is mainly about whether your consumer loan is in good condition. I think it is because of this that the media maliciously describes it as a "social credit score". It is a 100% stupid description.
I’m so glad to see a China video since my wife is Chinese and we’ve visited China several times. The cities are so far ahead of the US in tech and they don’t allow homelessness, panhandling and other unsavory things that are rampant in US cities. As a Chinese living in Europe, I can say that China is far better in every aspect compared to the Western world. China has much lower taxes, everything is much cheaper, safety is like night and day, and the Chinese actually have much more freedom than Westerners. Westerners think they have freedom, but the truth is, they only have the freedom to complain but don’t have any real choices. By the way, we don't have the "social credit score" that Western media often talks about. This is a rumor spread by Western media. We do have a credit system, but it has nothing to do with the "social credit score" and it was actually learned from the West. For example, if you default on your credit card payments, it could affect your ability to get a loan. In severe cases, there can be punitive measures. For instance, if someone owes a large sum of money, and the court rules that they must repay it, but they refuse, they will be placed on the "dishonesty list." This limits their ability to make high-value purchases, and they can only make basic purchases. A good example is Yueting Jia, the founder of LeEco in China and also the founder of Faraday Future. In the past, he was determined to build electric cars, but he burned through a lot of money, leading to huge losses at LeEco. He owed a lot of money, which led him to be placed on the dishonesty list. Now, he is hiding in the United States and afraid to return.

You said you're living in Europe. I'm sure you cannot wait until you can get out of that inferior 'Europe' and back to the more advanced, superior in every way and aspect China, more than the 'Western World', I hope you aren't made to live in Europe much longer, however, I have a question you may be uniquely experienced to answer: 'Europe' isn't a country I know but of the those countries, especially the 'EU' members, there is a stunning number of Mainland Chinese Immigrants. Legally, either they've immigrated to Citizenship or PR or long-term work visas or student visas etc etc. When I've asked about this, people tell me 100% of ALL forms of visas are 100% full 100% of the time in ALL EU nation embassies and consulates in Mainland China. So really, the MAXIMUM legal ways and the MAXIMUM amount of Chinese go to Europe if they can. next, Every European country has 1000s of Mainland Chinese who sometimes risk their lives and lose everything in order to get to that European soil and declare 'Asylum'. 'refugee'. Then they apply for a kind of temporary visa so they cannot be sent back to The PRC. next, Every European country has reported an increased number of Mainland Chinese illegals. So these Chinese are preferring to live there illegally, 'underground' type of living without any kinds of rights or documents etc. What's up with that? Why do you think that keeps happening? Again, I know YOU can't wait to leave that inferior lower civilization to the more superior mainland godnation world, but, What explains nearly any and all Mainland Chinese who CAN get themselves into Europe and stay in Europe?

I’ve never been to China and I appreciate this perspective. So thank you for that. One thing I will say that visiting a country/city anywhere in the world is quite different than actually living in a city or country! And every person’s experience may be different depending on many factors including family dynamics & support as well as financial circumstances, health, age, etc…As an American with Iranian heritage (my family immigrated to the USA over 4 decades ago), I will say politics are complicated and dirty at best! Everywhere in the world, there are good and bad people! Human nature is the same across the board! The people to be concerned with are politicians everywhere around the globe and all the “elites” who wish to manipulate, oppress and control the masses due to their greed and/or ignorance without understanding that all their evil deeds will be part of their ongoing karma from one existence to another.

You have to tolerate a sort of view of foreigners being exotic. People want to have photos to show they have met ‘one of them’. Once in a while I sense hostility from men who maybe thing I stole one of their women. The outlook is definitely different but interesting and thought provoking. I would prefer they had democratic government but for most people life has improved incredibly quickly and the culture has certain more collective mindset that makes the set up more tolerable to them. It is an enigma but not one we should close our minds to. Individually the people are decent and hard working and actually not very socialist because in a one party state the government does not need ideology in the mass mindset in order to maintain power and most people just say they are not political and do not rock the boat.

There isn't really a nation called 'The West' anymore than there is your imagined nation 'The Asia'. China's population, around 970 million here in 2025 makes up around 15% of the worlds total estimated population. China's Mainland is actually one of the most fascinating populations in the world today because it's currently experiencing a rate of decline so massive, so fast that experts say they cannot find any other example in human history. This is a population that was once 1.2 billion and will actually drop to HALF its population in a single generation at this rate. down to 600 million people by 2050! By then, the population of China is expected to make up less than 7% of the worlds population and just 13% of 'East Asia' population. It will be tiny in comparison to Asia. But wait because there is more. Population, just as a number, this isn't really good, bad or maybe nothing or great or terrible. In Chinas Mainland, before Amerika lifted 800 million Chinese out of extreme poverty, a massive population was a detriment, a terrible problem that burdened the failures and caused horrific starvation deaths and malnutrition. India, now at 1.4 billion, making China's 970 seem small in comparison, is not really BETTER for it and arguably this is a major problem weakening every Indians lives when they don't have the infrastructure, the food the systems to easily get the best of everything working smoothly. but there is even much more because a LOT depends on what KIND of population that is. The 'demographics'. Take Nigeria for example: Yes, it has 200 million people. Good or bad? Well in their case its a 'Golden 200 Million' because a massive number of their population will be 20 to 60 years old with few old people. This is GOOD for them. It's what China used to be 30 years ago. by contrast, China's Mainland is 970 million but is now entering a terrible demographic: A very very large number of those will be 60+ people with far far fewer '20 to 60' people. Thats a 'bad 970 million' in that sense. (ot that people are bad but the demographic makes the sheer population number a burden not an advantage) so who knows, maybe as China's population continues the most astonishing shrinkage every seen in the history of the world, actually speeding to 50% of its' population it might be GOOD for China? It might be that China having a tiny population (compared to The West or Asia) MAYBE helps it run more smoothly and increase wealth per person? We will have to wait and see.

Hi Neil: I lived in China in three different provinces for eight years. I believe it really does depend on the area that you live in just like any country. Some areas have very salt of the Earth people, who are really humanistic, caring. . just lovely. Some areas have the cold, quiet, money-hungry people as the reputation goes. The areas with humanistic people are usually very interested in posing with westerners and are very kind people. The other areas are very accustomed to westerners and tend to leverage, ignore us, or both. Yes, it is very safe on a daily bases. It's quite difficult to lump the entire country into "Chinese" although they do it. Really, it is a country of many different groups of people. And. . when you weren't sure if you were tracked. . ."you were definately tracked". Overall, my experience there was very good though. Lots of adjustment.
@Storm41552 күн бұрын
Evidence of being tracked? You don't know that, you are just saying it. Just think how difficult it would be logistically to track a billion people, how much manpower would you need, and how much would it cost to do so. If they were interested in a particular person, they certainly could track them, to track everybody it's just not feasible. And unless you are a spy, they are not really that interested in your run of the mill foreigner.

As a Sinologist (from Florida) with 25+ years traveling, consulting, lecturing in China on various issues. It is my 2nd home. My wife is from Chongqing, absolutely my favorite city in China and the world. What is revealing here, is that Neil and hopefully his viewers are learning that the paradigm of "all things in the West are superior" has shifted. Today, China is the most technologically advanced country in the world. Years, if not decades ahead of the West in many technologies and fields. It is frustrating not to be able to use credit cards, but they need to understand that credit cards are outdated technology as China was the first Cashless Society in the world and has been such for a number of years now. WeChat is the way to go and they can also use it in their countries, connect their credit cards to it for later use in China. We spent 5 weeks in China from the West Coast to Yunnan in the East and many cities in-between. 5 weeks and never spent 1 currency the entire trip! ALL WeChat Pay. It is the West, their countries that are behind, not China! I hope you 2 can stay connected and you can help educate his viewers on the "real" China and just how incredible the Chinese people are. Guess you didn't take him to Hotpot. :-) BTW. I am also a long-term subscriber to Reporterfy Media ( m.kzbin.info/door/S5P1DW9GspTYGRQyXPwd1g ) and still remember when you and your wife came to Chongqing and started to collaborate with iChongqing which I also followed from the beginning. I still remember the "youngster's" first live stream back then (they weren't particularly knowledgeable about Chongqing at the time). From novices to professionals in such a short period of time I assume with your help. I'm also tied into Geopolitics and follow "The Duran", Alexander Mercouris, Patrict Lancaster, along with some of the other analysts you've had on as guests, and you've been a guest on their channels. Thank you...

One other comment I'll make about my experiences in Taiwan, I would go out to night markets and normally get chaperoned by my Taiwanese coworkers. One night I went out by myself and when I got to work the next day, they seemed a little bit dismayed and shocked. I asked them whether I was in danger doing that, because quite frankly while I didn't see anything like graffiti or the normal signs of danger that you'd see in an American city, I honestly didn't know what danger looks like in Taiwan. Their response was one that I will keep with me forever, and I think it defines the Chinese mindset. (And goes along well with the idea that they are long-term thinkers and planners) When I asked about whether I was in danger, my friends and co-workers in Taiwan told me: " The Chinese people are not interested in hitting you over the head, they'd much rather cheat you out of it." They were worried that I was going to be fleeced.... I think about that whenever people talk about China attacking Taiwan..... I don't think they'd like to hit anybody over the head, they will take their time and assimilate them slowly over the next hundred years. (And that is basically 100% what I see, my friends who used to work for Taiwanese companies and we're actually banned from going to China are now all working for Chinese technology companies on the mainland)

@cruzfactor1 4 hours ago (edited) You actually picked a great time to visit a major city in China. Since it is Chinese New Year most of the large cities will literally be "empty" as many of the Chinese who work there are not from those cities, so they go back to their hometowns to be with their families. As a person who lived in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2009 to 2023 I was always amazed how quiet those cities became during Chinese New Year. Great to see back on again! I did wonder where you were.

Neil, It could have been me doing the video. I looked just as puzzled when I was there. I knew what mainstrem media told me was not true. So I created an alternate picture in my head in preparation...and yet it was still completely different. Just like you, I also not once saw any antagonistic looks from anyone, only curiosity. The officials dont smile ever to no one. Just focussed on doing their jobs as fast and efficiebt as possible. No dirt, no grafity and you can walk on the road at any time of the night...even as a lady. It was stunning, and yet there where still things I could not really comprehend. That has more to do with the how of the influence and control of the government on the people. The cultures are different and in total I found the chinese innocently naive in their nature. I will go there again sometime :)
@kenloh3038Күн бұрын
It is a stupid notion that the government "controls" the people through some mojo! That would happen in the West. The Chinese govt serves the people and therefore the people will react by supporting the govt. Westerners are too damn myopic intellectually to understand that. They cast their votes for promises that are not kept and get sold out by the elected officials who only protect the interests of the 1%. Bye Bye Miss American pie. You just voted for a pack of lies!

Remember, as China Uncensored has described many times, they have different "social credit scores"/social programs that they test out from city to city. They are not all the same, and they don't all have a "score". People might be completely unaware of them even going on, or not even thinking they're "bad", just like we don't always know everything that goes on in our citiy councils. We also approve of a lot of these various "programs", like those automatic traffic cameras, etc. QR codes. We already have digital ID in Scandinavia for instance. Elon Musk wants to make X the "everything-app", like our version of WeChat. I don't like it. I think it's bad enough, and I'm sure China does monitor or are able to track every citizen on the apps. Again, watch China Uncensored for more nuanced info. I'm also sure loads of people there don't mind. Just like sheeple here won't mind. They're fighting really hard for more censorship here, so...

In fact, owning car can be more hassle sometimes because one would need to wait/find parking spots that taking public transportation would be faster..... the public transportation pretty much covered the entire area.... that's why most people walk to/from their offices..... Like neil has said, it's a newly opened park.....many of them have taken their holiday off.... you would be surprised how many holidays the chinese have especially if you are from US.....and it's winter time...... even minneapolis/niagara falls would be empty during this freezing time!

Its Chinese New Year on 29 Jan 2025, so most workers have returned to their home towns in the Great Annual Spring Festival family reunion Migration that lasts up to a month. Alex and his blogger partner Jantzsen(Canadian) based in Shanghai/Nanjing have lived in China well over 10 years and would be able to enlighten on the so-called Social Credit Score. Jantzsen has spoken about the SCS in a blog last year- that it occurs discretionally at a local level concerning businesses' civic responsibilities and on issues like care for parents and limiting pupils' time online.

@scroopynooperz90512 күн бұрын
China is a mixed system. Don't believe the Western media BS - they try to conflate China with the old Soviet Union but China leaves many sectors of the economy up to the free market too. The parts they regulate, are the ones that make sense. For example, you can't price gouge people on chronic medicine they need in China 😂
@Storm41552 күн бұрын
120 million Chinese travel overseas on holiday or business every year. The only people not allowed to travel overseas are certain people in the military, or people associated with the military. For example, one of my adult students worked for a private company that had supply contracts with the PLA(China Military), she could not travel overseas. Even all those Chinese who left, and now are hating on China(e.g. a certain religious cult), how do you think they got overseas in the first place......on their Chinese passports.

Something not adding up with this video...he's walking around a park, in a city with four times the population of London, and hardly another person in sight?? It should be teaming with people. I have a Chinese friend who is from Bejing. She has been living in the Uk for over 20 years and went back recently to visit family. She said it was a nightmare. Police and military checking your papers everywhere, to get on a train, a bus etc. Also it is almost cashless and very hard to buy anything unless you're in the system. Neil McCoy ward is not to be trusted. He is selling you the idea that this social credit score system is not to bad. It just needs a bit of tweaking etc. Elon Musk is going to make X into WeChat. Another one not to be trusted.

I'm still resistant to everything being done electronically and by phone, and there you can only do it with the Chinese apps. So what if you are in trouble, there is no way for you to contact the outside world with your Western phone? I have friends from China, they prefer their freedom here in America. And yes, Chinese people are great, just like people in many countries. Also in the last part of your walk, all the buildings and the sky is totally obscured by this haze, fog or is it smog? I also find it odd that there were almost no people around in a large city... it's almost like this is a "show and tell" city for Westerners to "experience a real China city"
