Copenhagen is the capital of junk in Scandinavia, attracking all the losers in Denmark, in one little island, far from the prosperous mainland Jutland. Most factories in the city have gone bankrupt, and left are only a vast population of drug addicts on wellfare, and the thousands of gay men picking up small boys at the railway station, and the police doing nothing. My advice: dont bring your young teenagers to COPENHAGEN, as they may get offers everywhere.

"...oceans collide..." is quite a bit of stretching the realities. Both of the sea areas named Skagerak ( in the west and north of Skagen ) and the sea area named Kattegat to the east are the same body of water - as an extension / continuation - of the North Sea.

Your thoughts on what ww2 must have been like, reminds me of some of my summer vacation spend on the West Coast. My father married a woman who grew up as a part of the German minority (in Southern Jutland). I remember one time where her and my father had some quite intense talks about rather or not we should take her father along with us on one of these vacations and go see some of the bunkers there with him. They where in doubt as to how he would react and if it went badly would they be able to help him - plus the responsibility of having 3 children with them. I went so well! And I got to see history come "alive" right there before my eyes! He fought on the German side so it was quite emotional for me (be raised with us being allied with USA and UK). Now in one of these bunkers they had tried to make it look like it would've looked in ww2 (mimi museum). To see him looking so intens at some of these things and every now and again go "I had one of those", "Yes yes, it was exactly like this", "I remember that" it was so intens! Probably the best history lesson ever!

Almost 25% of all the bunkers from WW2 in Denmark have been eaten by the sea and are fully under the sea level. Others on the coast, like in France etc. were torn down and the materials re-used for reconstruction, but Denmark had no need for extra materials so they became a protected heritage. Most of the concentration camps there were setup during WW2 have also lost their buildings because they were torn down to re-use the materials. So the many bunkers still standing on the coast is an abnormality.
@Fetguf2 жыл бұрын
There is a somewhat more different story about the bunkers in Denmark. At some point after the war, it was decided to remove them. So how to do that. As you can see , they are build to last. First manual (machine) demolition was testet, but that had little effect. Then explosive was tried, but even with a fairly large charge, it only made a dent in them. So the main reason there are still about 6000 of them laying around on the west coast of Jutland, is that it is to expensive to remove them. Non of them are protected heritage. They kind of dont need to be as no one want to pay for the removal of them. So right now a couple of the biggest are museums, and the rest are slowly taken by the sea. Mayby in a million or 2 years, they will be gone....but I doubt it.
@itsmebrysonp2 жыл бұрын

@@Fetguf That is true from the early phase. But most of the Atlantic Wall in France were demolished already by the 1970's, there are for example barely anything that resembles fortifications on the D-day beaches. In the 1950' s and 1960's a small project of the defense forces was to seal up various parts of the bunkers to prevent random civilians going into one and either getting stuck or finding some possible explosives inside. Which is partially why some parts appear to be sealed off more recently. The fear of the bunkers is sort of parodied in tve 1971 Danish movie of Olsen Banden i Jylland. By the 1980's and onwards various museums got permission to set up these small information inscriptions about some of the bunkers, like the ones in Skagen and Frederikshavn, and others straight up became museums. While not a preserveable sight like other historical buildings or monuments, you would most likely get into trouble if you just began smashing the bunkers out of nowhere today.
@MrJuhs912 жыл бұрын
Fun facts: The bunkers was made by danish workers, there was not much work but the germans gave them around double the normal salary. So alot of workers came along way from home. It was part hitlers atlantic wall, bunkers lay from norway to France. Normandy bunkers was part of the same "wall". Also the bunkers are made from alot more % of cement than we use today, and of course reinforce by iron nets inside the cement. They cannot be taken apart becouse u know... German enginering. The cement is to hard. Also the Coast line moves, and the sea eats the land in West jutland. Which also make it harder they cant remove the on e under water. So some the bunkers also lay on the side and some of them even turn all the way around 180 degress. So when u walk in the u can see stairs in the ceiling. It is nearly always blowing from the West on the Westcoast, so the trees are pointing east, and sandunes are moving east over time. The sea is rough, some of the germans who like the location for vacation drown there every year. Locals know the sea is rough so they take more care.

@@VulcanM61 it wasn't even days ... A few hours perhaps 😂 not the proudest moment in my history of DK. But it ended saving many lives, because Nazi Germany trusted us, while we were shipping off our jews to Sweden behind their back. We had a substantial underground resistance, but the official resistance was basically non-existing... Our politicians decided that we would have a better chance to survive as a small nation by not trying to fight. I know that the German soldiers nicknamed DK the "whipped cream front" because it was like eating cake compared to other places.

@@BenjaminVestergaard Nothing to feel ashamed of, it was very easy for Germans to access all vital supply lines for all branches of the military. Compared to us here in norway we had the geography on our side. We could hide easily and everything where more set up for a resistance or a gorilla fight. Danmark don't have that, barely any places to hide etc. Not to mention its right there on the border with them + Britain where active in trying to help us
@BenjaminVestergaard2 жыл бұрын
@@Bubajumba well, now I wasn't in the fight... But I do think DK could have been doing a bit more resistance... It's always easy to seem clever looking through the back mirror... What the Nazis were aiming for was the natural sources of "heavy water" in Norway... But with Einstein fleeing etc. I'm not so sure they would have been able to put together the a-bomb. But they had figured out long distance missiles. We in DK should have realized what they were trying to do... Considering Rømer and Bohr and his kids... They should have had a harder time getting to Norway. I have no doubt that the Danish policy at the time saved lives... But considering how close they were to making the a-bomb we could have done better. We just didn't know that that was the purpose at the time. It's always easy to seem clever looking through the back mirror. Not proud of how easy we gave in.

@@BenjaminVestergaard According Germany's own historians, generals and people who experienced it, one of Germanys fierce opponants in time has been Denmark. The Slesvig wars to be more specifig, Germany didn't want to experience that again, so they used cunning the last time instead of brute force and it helped them. Denmark did the right thing, it went and fought the bolchevik instead in Finland and won that battle.

@@itsmebrysonp The fishing and seafaring museum in Esbjerg, the largest city on the west coast, has a very big section on big storms, floods and otherwise wild weather that the North Sea has come up with since records began in the early 1800's. A little bit similar to Florida's history of hurricanes. However the last "hurricane" level of wind was in 1999, and it was below the normal scaling for hurricanes. The land on the west coast of Jutland south of Esbjerg and all the way down through the border with Germany is a marshland that gets flooded by the ocean multiple times a year due to its continous low elevation and various dykes and small streams have been made to prevent too much flooding when there is a big storm. It is just the main area where it is always windy and the ocean tries to come into shore, and much of the coast line is being eaten by the waves so many cabins build in the 1950's and 1960's a bit inland are now very close to the shore. Like the lighthouse situation.

@@itsmebrysonp yea, it really does make the history lessons from school come to life going to the actual places and makes the cultures more understandable. Allied bomber planes were shot down from some of the bunkers you visited. 463 allied planes were shot down over Denmark. They sometimes flew over Denmark on their way back from raids over Germany. There are a lot of stories about bomber crews surviving crashes and getting smuggled to safety in Sweden. One bomber crew had a bag of oranges on the plane and the germans found them by following a trail of orange peels. You couldn´t get oranges in Denmark during the war. Another crew didn´t survive the crash and decades later a danish family that had kept one of the propellers from the plane managed to track down the pilot´s family and shipped the propeller to them in the US. Too many american bomber crews are buried in Denmark.

The bunkers were built by forced labour. Each had a battleship size canon. Directly across Skagerak (the water) at Mågerøy Fort in Kristiansand similar bunkers and canons were built. At the middle where the canons couldn't reach there was a minefield. The bunkers took a long time to be built, and used up a large amount of resources. They were never fired in anger.

When I went into those bunkers for the first time I had the same thoughts. And there are bunkers on all coasts in Europe. Germans have been in many European countries during WWII. In every country Germans commited unbelievable crimes. We were not welcome in those countries after the war and even nowadays there are people who mistrust Germans. I can fully understand this, because many families lost members due to the war Germany brought to the world. And that is why we had to be careful when it comes to involve in a military conflict and export weapons even if countries are begging to give them some. These are strange times and I hope there might be peace some day.
@berndb31412 жыл бұрын
By that logic, it's okay to mistrust, for example, Americans as well. Because of war crimes and overthrown goverments, many events much more recent. Doesen't work that way in my opinion. Everybody deserves to be juged on their own merit.
@gerdahessel22682 жыл бұрын
@@berndb3141 You are right. There's a lot the US did and does you cannot agree with. And many things other countries do also. What can I do if someone hates Germany because of the crimes my country did? Can I convince them to trust? I know why they mistrust and I have to accept the fact they do it. It might not be okay but it is a fact. It explanes the presence as history always does. Yes everybody deserves to be juged on their own merit and I wish all people would do this. But some don't. I cannot blame them because they have a reason for this. If you have visited a concentration camp you understand that for someone who survived this it might be very hard not to hate those who did this to them. Or the survivers of the cambodgean killing fields, or the survivers of wounded knee, or the survivors of the gulags ..... It sometimes drives me crazy!
