White people will never understand this feeling we have of anxiety, fear and this specific type of issolation. I tried to explain something similar to a old white male that I work with (who btw if the most caring, undrstanding, polite, person you will ever meet. just the kind of person that is really into equality and rights and inclusion of evrybody)... and he still didn't seem to understand this feeling. I could tell by his puzzled face.

@tidykingdom9628 жыл бұрын
Sumayah Khan I'm white and I understand that feeling but from another perspective. I am a foreign so I feel it when I work in environments that are majorly from another nationality than not my own, and I feel it when I'm in environments where everything is majorly done for men. I also understand that wearing a hijab will be an addition to these feelings (as most Muslim women have a foreign background) but I think the feeling of feeling uncomfortable and completely out of place is common. And it's so hard... We all have common ground feelings, from different perspectives. Some white women will not feel it because they live in a bubble, and unfortunately those are the minorities that rule the world. And also Unfortunately we feel this everywhere in the world. I don't feel comfortable being a white woman in the Middle East as well. Change takes time. And we're all fighting for it to change. Together. Big hug to all you Awesome Muslim women out there! You look gorgeous on your hijabs! As a Scarves fan, I feel so jealous sometimes of the awesome ones you wear and how many you own. I can't justify having so many as you do. Ah ah ah.

This is why I love Dina so much. I'm not muslim, but I am a brown woman of colour, and I've felt this way so many times. Every time I experience this, I always try to make up excuses for the people doing this to me, but the truth is it is almost always a race thing, or a religion thing, or a gender thing. When you're part of a marginalized group, you just get a gut feeling about this stuff. The fact that you talk about your experiences, honestly and unapologetically, means so much to me. Even before you got into all that stuff, all that stuff about your anxiety around the event was honest to god so relatable and real. I watch a million youtubers and I have been watching them for literally half my life (I'm 18), but it's rare for me to be touched by anyone as much as I am touched by you. All the love from Canada to you, Dina!

Wow, thank you for being so honest with your story at the BAFTAS and at the Charity Event. I genuinely am very sad (and angry) this happened to you. I was so excited and happy for you at the start of this video and now i just upset because you didn't deserve this. How ironic that people at these events preach about integration and acceptance but the effect it has had on you is actually the opposite?! You are half English as well which makes your story even more awful! Imagine what it would have been like for a Pakistani blogger? Probably even worse (if that's possible). I think everyone should do what they can to help and share this video on their Facebook/Twitter or whatever platform you use. Let's make this video go viral so people know the truth about these events!!! SHARE THE VIDEO PEOPLE!!!

Amy Lewis I was thinking the same thing! If Dina who is "white" & half English was treated like that, I cannot imagine how much worse it would have been if I, a 100% Arab Muslim, was there instead of her! Wow.
@EvenstarSaima8 жыл бұрын
Amy Lewis and also Dina is the most fashionable hijabi IMO, can you imagine how hard it'd be for a non-fashionable muslim or religious person? Also, why did the 'experienced' girl who Dina drove to the event with not stick with her or at least guide her? Flipping heck.
@Libyan0098 жыл бұрын
Amy Lewis but you can't tell by looking at her that her mother is English. People treat you based on your looks. Unless they asked where she's from, then they are treating her the way they'd treat anyone who is covering their hair and has a tan.

Dear Dina, You have come such a long way and you do us proud! I have to say that I am so sorry for your experience at both events. As a Black Muslim, i totally understand what you're talking about. But, when i saw that you went to the BAFTAs, I was so happy because it meant something to me. I was just super proud to see a muslim woman at that event with bloggers like estee and patricia. It is so nice to see you doing videos for big beauty companies and going to huge events. Don't let a couple bad experience keep you from doing the job you're doing. It hurts to hear this. I remember you and Sid wanted to go to a 'garden centre' (I'm sorry if that is not the right word... English is not my first language) and you didn't want to go in because you felt uncomfortable. I cannot shake that story off. And this just adds to this. I live in the Netherlands and I'm third generation mixed descent. As a result, I look very similar to the Turkish girls who are often treated like absolute crap here. I've been called names, told I travel without a train ticket when I did have a ticket and my twin sister and I were told that it is a miracle we study at such a high level at university, are so intelligent (their words not mine haha) and are so eloquent - and added 'especially since you must be the first in your guest workers/immigrant family to go to school'. Another classmate, who knew that my family is Indonesian, called me a ''troostmeisje'' (which basically refers to the Indonesians who were raped during the Second World War). All our classmates were staring and I flipped. I used aggression and I so respect how you use your words and positivity to spread an alternative view. Bless you! Xxxxx

My friend has a tshirt with the word "token" emblazoned across the chest because as a Hijabi woman of colour in her field, she is a real minority and as such gets invited to events much like the ones you have described, where self righteous pontification is in full swing, while the actual people of colour in the audience and on the panel are being treated awfully. Well done for showing up and handling the affair with such grace, I felt agony for you because I get anxiety about massive events too and it's always a push for me to attend, but you were brilliant mashallah. Keep rising. Keep growing. Keep representing. As the great Maya Angelou said, “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it."

So heartbreaking to hear about your experience. Sadly institutional racism is something we have to deal with every day. Keep your chin up and know that with hardship comes ease X

Sorry you went through that at the charity event and with the security guard. That awkward I don't fit in here feeling is so shitty! The charity event situation is so ridiculous but not surprising tbh! Organisations and people in general are using diversity as a new buzzword to make themselves sound better, but in reality nothing is done to diversify and include people from minority groups. It's just a new marketing tool! Thanks for sharing your experience Dina! It's really important to speak out xx

You are literally everything I went trough at my work gathering well most things in that person. I couldn't imagine , you did well though Hun do stress to much , I'm very amazed that a brand didn't just have a whole bunch of white youtubers at an event wich is so good they need much more diversity it still something that stops me from youtubing women of colour don't get noticed. You looked stunning x

Sharnas Creations. Same thing that went through my mind. That feeling dina described. I knew that. It was exactly everything I felt especially at my work gatherings. Then it came to me, i should take this as an opportunity not just for me, this is a chance for me to turn up as a representative for us all. Despite everything that happened, when i saw Dina made it there. I was beaming with pride. One of us made it there. It meant a lot. Go Dina. Continue doing what you do. Continue to shed light.

This reminds me of a quote from the Quran, "And the Jews will not be pleased with you, nor the Christians until you follow their religion. " (Al baqarah 21:20). I am not saying that we should disrespect the "white culture", but we don't need to prove ourselves by assimilating to their traditions.

I'm sorry that you had experienced such negativity, but I'm also thankful that you've shown the reality of these events. You've come so far, and I will always support you! You don't need none of these fancy events to lift you, you've done that pretty much all by yourself (: MashaAllah

Dina thank you for your stories, so sad to hear you have had some bad experiences at events like this. In general they are quite stuck up but I still think it is so important to have Muslim women be represented and even though you feel out of place maybe it will give confidence for other muslim women to not to be afraid to have these experiences. Don't let them get you down!

Dina thank you so much for sharing. I'm not Muslim, but I am a minority and understand how you have that feeling in the back of your mind. I was wondering how things have been in England right now. I'm in the U.S. and have been concerned for my fellow minorities here. Especially my fellow Jewish and Muslim citizens. You sharing your story is a good thing. Hopefully it will cause people to have more of a voice and advocate for change like here in the US. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I am not Muslim but I understand your pain. I am Romanian and I guess you heard all the stereotypes about my nationality on the news. Anywhere in Europe and even in US I had problems with people after I say where I'm from. I've been told "ofcourse your a prostitue" or "I am missing my wallet, do you know anything about it?" And even refused medical care in emergency room. You have to speak up, where your stories! I'm this way people will open their eyes when they see someone mistreating a person. Can't wait to see your next video ☺

Dina, this is such an important video. Your experience is so important and needs to be heard. You are such a light and please remember that whatever you do, you are paving the way and creating a platform for young Muslim hijabi girls who look up to you and aspire to be like you. I just want you to know that you are so appreciated and that everything you're feeling about being overlooked or treated like less-than is valid on your end and only by speaking about this and keeping white feminists who only center themselves accountable. In America (especially now under Trump, but tbh since always) we've always seen so called "liberal" white people who advocate for "diversity" etc only do so to 1) make themselves look good 2) advance their careers/ratings, but not actually do anything to help advance people of color/visible minorities and actually usually do so at the EXPENSE of minorities. I've said this, especially post- Women's March etc, if someone's brand of feminism, or "liberalism" or whatever, isn't intersectional, is only concerned with issues that impact white people, and doesn't actually center or advance minorities --> it's. white. supremacy. Anyway. that's just my 2 cents because I live in America and just fucking done with all this shit. Just know that we appreciate you. Your feelings are completely valid. And so many young girls are grateful for the path you continue to pave for them, especially that it can be so incredibly difficult for you to pave.

Thanks Dina for sharing and being so open about your experience and raising this important matter. You inspire me more than any of those 'celebs' or so called 'important' (or shall I say complete fake people) out there. And I agree with many in the comment... I hope people get to see this and reveal what these fancy, well known events are really like and about. It's funny how it reminds me of being at school, not truly and honestly being accepted. Honestly, people just like to talk the talk.

CONGRATZZ DINAA!!!! You honestly deserve to be in the bafta and all these fancy pancy events, your so honest, humble and kind, its one of the things I admire about you. I really do think you should name the charity that you went to because I can't imagine how insulting that must have felt. I definitely do not want to support a charity that doesn't look after their guests. Keep your head high and don't be discouraged by the idiotic actions of some individuals. We love and support you!
