I spend a lot of time in Whitby during the summer as it is just down the road from Me. I fell in love with Whitby when My late parents used to take me and My Sister there when we were children plus I am a big Gothic horror fan too with of Whitby being partly the setting in Stokers Gothic Horror novel Dracula, Stoker stayed at a guest house on Royal Crescent Whitby, I do recall it was no 6 Royal Crescent although I could be wrong, he also spent a lot of time in the public Library and this is where he found a book about the principality of Walachia and in that book there was the mention of a certain Vlad Dracul. Yep I love Whitby, friendly people and Fish and Chips to die for from The Magpie Cafe. You should check out some of Frank Meadow Sutcliffes photos online Ste, some fantastic photos of everyday folk of Whitby back in the Victorian days you would love them.

Whitby Jet is famous. Its fossilised wood! They make jewelry out of it. Was used as a type of mourning jewelry. Also the seafood is yummy. I'm not a pie eater but a Scotch Egg with fresh-made English Mustard is my choice. Never buy a jar, get the powder and make the amount you want fresh! Its also cheaper and lasts longer (the powder) What lovely kids! What a beeoootiful blue sky! I hope they keep a Cardiac Arrest gizmo at the top of those steps! Thank you Stephen!

Dear Stephen I think the things you are calling old lamp posts are capstans used for hauling in the old sailing ships. Normally seen today on the decks of ships such as car ferries, they just use to loop a rope around them and the pier hands would put spars into the square holes and turn them hauling in the rope and the ship.

I’m glad you finally got to Whitby and have enjoyed looking around. The things on the pier that you questioned are capstans . They were used to haul sailing ships in and out of the harbour so they could catch the wind and raise their sails.

Hi Stephen. To me a very interesting video. I come from Middlesbrough and we holidayed all my childhood years at Whitby.n Interesting to see things that did not exist 70 years ago in Whitby, like the jet museum in what was the Methodist chapel. I admire your vigour, you covered in the space of a day the different parts of Whitby. For me it would be one day on the old side, another on the pier, another in the town and a fourth on the West Cliff. I lived and worked the end of my life in New Brunswick Canada and am now in a care home over here. Paul Stockill

8.53 - not old lamp-posts, they were windlasses, or winches from before engines. the rectangular holes had poles inserted, then a rope was looped round the column, and men walked round and round pushing the poles, to wind the rope in. - - -

Welcome to my neck of the woods. Glad you liked it 👌 when yoh go back I'll give you some tips you need to visit the villages of Staithes, Robin Hoods Bay & go up into the Yorkshire Dale's to visit the village of Goathland ( the home of the TV show Heartbeat 👍 now the accent is interesting because if you met me you would automatically assume I was a Geordie but I'm not. Being from the south of County Durham. I actually live only 9 miles from the North Yorkshire border, so I do have a bit of a Yorkshire twang ( but you'd only notice that if you were well versed to the differences to the accents in the Northeast 👍👌

I call those baskets Lobster Pots. Whitby Abbey 's foundation goes way back to Anglo/Saxon days. Hilde of Whitby held a Synod in 664 at which the church had to decide on which date to hold Easter. They chose the Roman date rather than the Irish one. Great firm very interesting but not many folk about.

15:29 Ive always wanted to stay at that hotel on the corner of that terrace! (The Royal) I went to Whitby once staying at a B&B just to the left of that terrace, East Terrace. And l recall going from up there, down onto the quay, via those steps and slope you came up, which if im not mistaken is actually called Khyber Pass, along the harbour, across the swing bridge, to a restaurant just opposite the building on stilts thats called the town hall. But the only difference from your visit we did this walk at night in the most ferocious arctic blizzard of a snowstorm. After our meal, the snow was almost a foot thick! And l thought it rarely snowed by the sea!
