My big sister took me to see this movie when I was 12 years old. She covered my eyes through all the racy scenes. Thank God this scene wasn't one of them. Myself and quite a few other people in the movie theater where balling our eyes out when Dolly sang this song. Whitney is my girl, but this song will always be Dolly"s song. Dolly wrote the song. She knew why she wrote the song. Dolly sangs it from the heart with a certain type of emotion. Dolly is an underrated vocalist and even more underrated song writer. 'I Will Always Love You" is one of the greatest songs ever written.BTW, this song has been # 1 three different times. Music history.

It amuses me when folk's request radio plays for the love of their life...or choose it for the first dance at weddings...because Whitney ripped the soul out of it with her warbling and vocal calisthenics all they can remember is "I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU" at 1,000 decibels...completely missing the point that it is a woman sadly saying goodbye to her man. Dolly put so much emotion and feeling into this and totally nailed the sentiment of the words. She makes me choke up every time...just WOW!

I like both versions but I think it’s more about intent that’s interesting. With Whitney’s it’s basically coming to the realization after they’re gone. With Dolly’s it’s literally a goodbye song, you could feel the tears and sadness in her singing. Either way, an amazing song that only became duplicated because it was Houston (a great) at her absolute best.

Clifton Carter I used to like Whitney singing this song until I heard her take credit for the song. I got real pissed about that. Dolly wrote it and sang it first and that is that!
@timothygriffith85839 жыл бұрын
+Clifton Carter Wow. Made the song? Made the idiotic public aware. The song was a treasure even if it wasn't top 40 crap when Houston sang it. Dolly sings a beautiful, heartfelt love song. The way it was written and intended to be. Whitney screams it and blows it out of the water in a "in your face, shatter the glass" grotesque way. Yes, Whitney had power in her vocals. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Sometimes less really is a whole lot more. Dolly puts Whitney to shame in every possible way. God love them both. : )
@lbroderick7839 жыл бұрын
+Damien L I love both singers and enjoy both versions. However, I do give the edge to Dolly for this song because she wrote it. I admit I was blown away when Whitney first came out with her version but over time I appreciate Dolly's version more. There is a sweetness and loveliness to Dolly's version that I relate to more. As the poster said above "sometimes less really is more" and in this case I agree.
