@@MichaelAndersen_DK Yes, this song is only the most meaningful of its original intend, is to a friend and not a boy friend or a lover. Cause the words says that both side in the story knows that each one is finally not for each other in life's endeavor. It make sense to me now after listen to Dolly that why would two lover love each other too much and would say they are not for each other, only music partner make sense.

I know.. They are both the same song.. but so different. And you can tell that Dolly was the writer. There is an authenticity in Dolly's voice. Dolly was singing it to a friend... (Or Ed Earl in the movie.) Whitney was singing it for another reason, which gives the listener a different meaning. Whitney was singing it as a love song.. They both hit SOOO differently.. but deeply!!

Dolly's is better,Whitney could not be doing that song today ,if she were still alive,it would be out of her range now,she struggled with it in 1999,imagine 21 years later, no way ,she set the bar so high vocally,that no one could be doing it in their late 50's ,early 60's,much like Steve Perry of Journey did,he vocally speaking,set the bar so high ,its impossible to sing in that register when you hit your 60's ,or older, he's 71,but its OK ,his legendary status remains just like Whitneys,

What's remarkable is that, even after Whitney ´s astonishing performance of this song, Dolly is still here to tell us the original story with her unique voice and genuine feeling. Isn't it beautiful how two great singers can honour a song differently?

Dolly Parton has a great story about the first time she heard Whitney's version. She had given permission to _The Bodyguard_ to use the song but didn't know they had. Whitney's epic version came on the car radio and it took her awhile to realize that it was her song! Dolly tells the whole story wonderfully as you would expect. It's on a KZbin video somewhere.

Dolly song is a farewell to mentor song (it's not about romantic love). Foster (and Houston) took Linda Ronstadt's 1975 arrangement and and just played with the melody line. Dolly had to call to give David the final verse of the song - which Linda didn't included in her recording (when she heard that they were using Lindas' recording as a template). But in the movie the song is used, as a song, about romantic love....so there is a difference.

John Palmer Well, Mr Music, so many folks in the Country Music world are upset that Whitney gets all the credit and some people don't know that Dolly composed this song. Dolly brings a tender pathos to it. Whitney with her once magnificent voice before the drugs and her life with Bobby destroyed it, adorned it with operatic pyrotechnics. As I had said to Nu, each woman brings her specialty to the table. I like both versions, but I wanted Dolly Parton to receive her due as the originator of the song.
@johnpalmer100510 жыл бұрын
Terry Westbrook-Lienert I totally agree. Whitney's version was so huge that it has almost completely left the original largely forgotten. The percentage of the population of music lovers that even know that this was a Dolly Parton gem long before Whitney is probably fractional at best. Thank you for doing your part to remind everyone of the beautiful original as well as the beautiful re-imagining of the second incarnation of this tune.

@@heartstrings7814 A National treasure, How perfect. Indeed she is. When I was little I would wish and pray and ask Santa to let me meet her to give her a hug. To hear her giggle in person. In my old age I'm content with hearing her sing. But oh to dream. 🤗🤗 Enjoy Heart Strings. And May you have a blessed NEW year 🙏🙏. Long Live Our Dear Dolly !!!!!

The Brilliance, of this song is the word LOVE can be translated into the different loves people have toward each other in many different ways, and this song supports all of those feelings, no matter who sings or hears it.

I first saw Dolly on the Porter Wagoner Show in 1967, I think, when I attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. I was a guitar player from Ft. Lauderdale who loved rock, blues, & Beatles, Stones. Porter didn't do anything for me. But Dolly did and still does. She has always has been a true colossal talent, and a very sweet soul. Thank you Dolly for your wonderful music that has touched so many 💕.

Singers are entertainers. Songwriters are artists. That's why I will always prefer Dolly's versions of her own songs. Doesn't mean you have to, though. Whitney made the song iconic.

Wow! This is my first time hearing Dolly Parton sing this song. I knew that she had written it and was the first to sing it. She is awesome and the story behind it is simply sweet and heartfelt!! I just do not see the reason to choose between her and Whitey "the voice" Houston. They are both incredible singers. I could sit and listen to them both all day.
