I like how after 0:37 she takes Gene's silence as judgement of her and immediately begins to project her own fears and beliefs about herself onto him. "You think I'm booking all these weak parts because I was weak in my marriage?" Sally needs to be told she wasn't weak, because that's the trait she fears and despises most about herself, just like Barry needs to be told he isn't inherently violent because he knows it's always there waiting to come out. I love how this season is all about the things we tell ourselves to cope, and the constant internal struggle between our own story and the "truth".

I love scenes like this where one actor has a monologue that's really a dialogue with themselves. I think the way her voice changes with her emotions is the part that stood out to me. Its almost a 3 person scene between Gene, Sally, and past Sally.

It’s a common tactic for therapists (and one terrible boss I once had) to keep the other person talking. We as humans don’t enjoy long pauses in conversation, so we tend to babble to fill the silence and end up exploring things more deeply.

The character herself is a little bit of a bitch (understandably because of the abuse she went through. She doesn't want to be weak anymore or have to rely on someone because she doesn't want it to happen and she doesn't want to face the reality of what happened, so I get why she's rude sometimes), but the actor that plays her is phenomenal
@izzytonixHD3 жыл бұрын
Amazing actor , but what a f up character ... like I don’t understand the point , is she the only thing that makes Barry happy ? Cuz am not so sure about that ... how can an intelligent man like Barry not see that she uses everyone around her for her own interest before throwing them away ? Barry , even if he’s a maniac and a phsyco realize how twisted he became ... and he’s trying so hard to change that , where sally on the other hand just don’t give a F bout anyone or anything , and almost never think of the consequences of what she does , or when she does she need others to make her realize it , that’s why she’s not much liked , she’s just a teenager not fitting in an adult world and sometimes it can get really annoying
@LordSesshaku3 жыл бұрын
@@izzytonixHD You do realize that Sally's faults are normal. While this is the same Barry that ends this very season killing without remorse everyone in the building (including his own trainees) just to get his hands on Fuches? Barry isn't trying to change himself, he's trying to escape his past life, without facing the consequences. He killed his friend, an innocent father, to avoid jail, he killed a cop, the girlfriend of his teacher, to avoid jail. He's not willing to face the consequences of what he is and what he's done. He's also using Sally, he never tells her his reality. He never gives her a REAL CHOICE about their relationship. Therefore, he's using her.

Gene‘a style of teaching completely molded her mind in such a way that all Sally needs to feel backed into a wall is for him to stare at her
@g.Raider5 жыл бұрын
I'm disappointed with how the other actors reacted to her marriage story throughout this season. She's narcissistic and bratty, but she's hurt too. Avoiding and gawking at a trauma victim after they disclose their experience to you is just as bad as saying that they deserved it. I'm very happy that Barry gave her some consolation and encouragement, but nobody else, not even Gene, reassured her that she was doing the right thing or commended her for her bravery. She had no evidence that people were going to accept her for who she is, and that's profoundly scary and heartbreaking.
@Garium875 жыл бұрын
What you fail to understand is that Sally does not accept herself as what she is. That is why she feels it is necessary to lie about her abuse story. And that is why she doesn't want to play those "weak women". Gene knows its an act. One that she plays for many years. So he lets her talk until she admits to herself that she is not as invulnerable as she pretends. She is just a human being with weaknesses and she had to suffer in order to grow. That is a relatable story and far more interesting than the lie about herself she holds on to.
@g.Raider5 жыл бұрын
Alex She did need to swallow her pride and admit this part of her life. But if you recall, the closer it got to showtime, the more uncertain she was about how good of a decision it was because of how everybody had taken it. Her classmates avoided her like the plague, her agent thought it was going to ruin her image, and one the people who compliments Sarah afterwards said that she was relieved that it wasn’t “another abuse story” Sarah might have been more willing to tell the truth if the people in her life had reassured her more that she was doing the right thing. Barry was the only one who did.

I always found this scene really intriguing because Gene, being the amazing teacher that he is, managed to only say one thing to Sally and she basically had an entire conversation with herself using Gene as just a placeholder person in that moment while exploring her deepest darkest secrets/fears. That was such a power play on Gene's part, it's not even funny. It was just scary at how well he brought out the dark side of Sally without really doing much at all, except asking a question that was somewhat leading.

i totally feel for her. women don’t have it easy in acting. when barry got an audition just because of his height or a FEATURE FILM, i was as pissed as sally. she worked super hard to get representation and still, she was booking work that wasn’t good.
@Garium875 жыл бұрын
because women never get auditions just for the way they look? Are you kidding me? And who has it easy, making a living as an actor? Every year, 20.000 people are moving to LA to become movie stars. How many make it? One in a thousand, if even that. It is an insane goal to pursue.
@aingeav4975 жыл бұрын
Alex we do certainly get auditions for the way we look! but that’s not all of it. there’s type, and then there’s literally everything else. sally is probably average height and has blonde hair, so that’s what she looks like. she gets called in for roles that fit that physical description, but she still needed an agent to get those calls. otherwise she would sit in open calls for hours and not be seen. she also had to take roles that involved little to no lines, she had to be a day player or an extra to fill up her resume to begin to work her way up. she worked hard for all of these things, but barry didn’t have an agent and was literally just in the waiting room and got an audition for a lead role in a feature because he was a tall white guy. i can tell that hader and berg as writers are commenting on lots of different issues in the acting industry with this, and it really just hit home. i act, and i really do have to work hard to be where i am at any given point in time, but men in acting all around me are booking like crazy. and they’re booking good stuff!
@Garium875 жыл бұрын
@@aingeav497 You still didn't explain at all why that would be allegedly a gender issue. If you look like everyone else does, well maybe it is harder but what has this to do with being a man? How often do you think men are 6.2 feet? It's the exact damn thing. You either are very good looking or there is something special about you that they want in their movie or there is simply no reason for anyone to chose you over the million of other actors who look just like you. Why would men have it easier? I think hader and berg are commenting on how much of a selfish bitch Sally is.
@Garium875 жыл бұрын
@@aingeav497 Oh, and no offense, but maybe the guys get more auditions than you do because they didn't color their hair pink.
@aingeav4975 жыл бұрын
Alex this is a gender issue because: there are statistically more women going for jobs in acting. if you go in for a role, they usually bring in 200 girls. For men, it’s a lot easier, mainly because of the negative stigma around theater and film acting being “gay”, stuff like that. i’ll say that sally has it easier than other women in the industry, as she is really pretty, blonde, probably average height, and has a typical body size. And yet she still has a hard time breaking in, but she fights for her work and this is what she wants. She is succeeding, in a way, even though her reel is shit. she hasn’t been given the choice to turn down roles yet, she needs to fill her resume and reel to show her agent that she can be reliable, but also to have things to showcase to other directors if needed. She’s done all of this work just to get an agent, and she’s really dedicated to her work. barry was waiting for sally at an audition and an agent had him put in a slot to audition for a director. now, that is so unrealistic. that happens NEVER! and that’s why it’s funny as a concept, but it DOES reflect on how much easier it is for a man to land auditions. also, thanks for reminding me to change my profile picture, i haven’t had pink hair for about a year and a half
